Let's Discuss Potential Movie Purchases/Viewings
I thought we could have a thread that allows us to post the movies we've recently purchased or watched. I can't be alone in buying movies each week and many of them I purchase blindly solely based on the actors.
I'll start and if this thread fails so be it.
Boys of Ghost Town (Danny Trejo)
Played (Val Kilmer, Gabriel Byrne, Vinnie Jones)
Elegy (Penelope Cruz, Ben Kingsley)
Bad Education (Gael Garcial Bernal, Lluis Homar)

first two look like DTV fodder, could go either way. gems have been found amongst these kinds of things, but many turds as well
elegy looks gay, never had any interest in it
bad education is supposed to be good, although i'm not fully convinced on almadovadordor, need to see more.

i think gloss is referring more to the actors than the general descriptionTrademark wrote:I don't buy shit based off of cover ever...

rarely, almost never in fact, read the description in on the back. half the time they're not even accurate
price is always a huge factor though, even a movie i know to be a uber-classic might not get got if it's some crazy expensive super deluxe package

I can see that.... My Local store does 5 for 20 on used new/good releases(new meaning 1 month old) and 10 for 20 on the straight to DVD stuff...

I bought a lot of movies based of covers and I rarely ever regret watching stuff. You can tell a lot about the target-audience from the cover obviously. If I'm on the fence I'll skim the back for keywords while trying not to learn too much about the movie. A lot of movie that win obscure awards and boast about them on the cover are good. On the other hand, if shitty newspapers give great reviews I turn sceptical.
Whether to Jason of Philaflava or John Podesta, I will speak my fucking perspective openly

Most of the stuff I buy is stuff I have heard good things about or am a big fan of the people involved. I have an Amazon Visa card so thats where I cop well over half of my movies and my Amazon wish list is like 15 pages long.
Some unwatched stuff on my shelf:
In the Realm of the Senses
Last Year in Marienbad
A Bullet For The General
Keane
Jodorowski box set
Two Lane Blacktop
Perfect Blue
The Big Heat
Metropolis
The Quiet Duel
Touchez Pas Au Grisbi
Lots more but thats all i can remember off the top of the head

i'd say rent, not because the movie isn't dope but because imo it's not the kind of movie you'll find yourself watching over and over again. good as hell in fact, but it's long and a little slow and kinda dense with info and characters - not exactly light entertainment. the criterion dvd is a bit pricey as usual.
also, you can rent now and if you like it that much by the time you feel the urge to watch it again you might be able to cop it used or on some DDD sale

I've actually been looking for cockfighter for a while but that fucking thing is OOP and expensive as hell. I've been trying to see more Monte Hellman, have you seen The Shooting? pretty ill offbeat western with a young Jack Nicholson...drizzle wrote:lots of heat on this list. i would recommend this orderTommy Bunz wrote: Some unwatched stuff on my shelf:

Keane is the 3rd movie from Lodge Kerrigan, the guy who directed Clean, Shaven. Which, if you haven't seen yet you need to do immediately. Peter Greene is extremely convincing as a schizo and the movie has some of the most incredible usage of sound that i've ever encountered.

i have seen and own the shooting, as i have a pretty big hardon for monte hellman in general. except for 2 lane, which did nothing for me at all and struck me as boring and pretentious

I had planned to watch both Holy Mountain (what "is" it?) and Grisby, actually. The Big Heat is a must, Tommy. It's the Dark Knight in the 50's.
Jamrage:
Dead Mans Shoes - Good revenge-flick, solid the whole way through. Even manages to add some unusual elements in the story really well. 8/10
Scarlet Street - Nice noir with almost all of the classic elements in play. You can't go wrong... 8/10 too, I guess.
