CM Punk & Wrestling's Best Storyline in Years...

Post by battlecatmeowstab212 »

Anybody else following this?

If not, read this for a quick recap of what lead up to last night:

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/669 ... ad-cm-punk

and then last night as Raw went off the air he said THIS:

<object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2OS9wZGb_3g?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2OS9wZGb_3g?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

woke up randomly and saw the end of this. surprised he got away with saying "wrestler" and not to mention all the non-wwe names he dropped including Colt Cabana and Ring of Honor.

Thank You Based Punk

Didnt' see this thread, posted the same thing in Sports Bar. Either way, legendary promo right there, shots fired in all directions. Extra lulz for calling out ג€œdoofus son-in-law" Triple H.

I've laughed at wrestling the last, I don't know, 15 years? But that was fucking awesome!

Yes those angles can be awesome, but more often than not after the promo it is all downhill. Yesterday is likely the highlight of this angle, and that is fine, it was well worth it. In fact they already ruined the angle, next weeks raw has been taped already and this is what happens:
Vince McMahon comes out and he says that CM Punk deserved his suspension and he talks about how Punk wanted too much money for his new contract. Vince says that he is standing by his decision to suspend Punk.

John Cena comes out and he says that Vince loves freedom of speech and he still wants to face CM Punk. Cena says that if Vince doesnג€™t feel like fighting then he should hang it up.

Vince says that he really suspended Punk because he doesnג€™t want Punk to leave with the title. Cena made fun of Vince being afraid to let Punk wrestle. Cena talks about the match and then Vince tells Cena not to piss him off and not to be like Hogan.

Cena tells Vince to give the people what they want. Vince says that he doesnג€™t give a damn what the people want. Cena gives Vince a speech and then gives Vince the WWE Championship and walks out.

Vince tells Cena to wait and he meets him on the ramp. Vince says that CM Punk is reinstated and Cena has his match at Money in the Bank with CM Punk. Vince tells Cena that if Punk walks out of Chicago with the title then John Cena is fired.
Cena loses. Winner of Money in the Bank match comes out and beats Punk. Cena not fired. Punk gone for a while I assume. Only thing we can look forward to is how unruly the Chicago crowd will be at the PPV.

hopefully he re-signs. they cant afford to lose their top heel longer than just a few months worth of vacation. Alberto Del Rio is god and all but he's not gonna carry the company on his back.

OR

McMahon is revealed to be in cahoots with Punk the whole time and he doesn't go anywhere, forcing Cena off television until a drunk-with-power Punk terrorizes the company forcing McMahon to bring Cena back to take him out.

OR

A screw-job type ending revealing Vince has Cena pegged as his chosen one, effectively turning Cena heel and possibly turning Punk face.

OR

Something else totally different as innovation in a stale wrestling world is Punk's M.O. Honestly, there's so many ways this can go and, with the unorthodox way it has been set up, I'm genuinely interested in a way I haven't been since the late 90s.

I'm thinking this is a loose cannon gimmick, and he's going to resign for sure. Nonetheless, AMAZING promo. Let's see more of these!

I used to read wrestling mags in the break room while eating my lunch when I worked at Budweiser. I found out about CM during that summer. My little brother watches and always explains the storylines. Occasionally I watch a couple matches with him when we visit. CM Punk has been his favorite Wrestler for a few years now. Im gonna have to hear my lil bros spin on this storyline.

Jim Rome invited CM Punk to appear on his show and "finish his rant." Said he would give him 45 minutes. Could this be the WWE breaking into the mainstream again?

This story line has me interested enough to maybe get into wrestling again. I stopped watching around the early 2000's. Can anyone in here recommend some good resources that i can check out to get caught up instead of just diving back in head first with no point of reference?

This CM Punk storyline started literally the week before last, so between the article and the clip in the first post, you would be all caught up.

As someone who just started watching again right after Wrestlemania this year (which was a wholly inconsequential and uninteresting event), thing really have only begun to change in the past month now that Raw is being directed differently and the guys themselves have more freedom with their characters.

R-Truth was a happy dancing and rapping good guy until he snapped in the most disturbingly crazy way possible a month ago and is convinced there's a WWE conspiracy keeping him down to promote John Cena and appease the "little Jimmys" (his term for children who are wrestling fans). It's cool to see a bad guy come to the ring with no entrance music again and just berate the audience.

Mark Henry has just been randomly showing up and destroying everything in his path.

Sin Cara is the latest hot masked property from Mexico who literally says nothing but puts on some pretty jaw-dropping aerial stuff in his matches with special mood lighting.

Zack Ryder was an opening match/untelevised match wrestler who decided to stop waiting for the WWE to promote him so he started his own YouTube show that, in 16 weeks, now gets more viewers than any videos on the WWE website. Total grassroots promotion and is starting to get television time as a cult hero who is a proto-Jersey Shore Long Island guido.

Those are the major new things that really haven't been seen before. The Punk storyline is the crescendo in all of this, but there is some refreshing new stuff happening. This is all a very recent direction, so if you started tuning in Monday you wouldn't be lost at all.

Thanks for the run down and it's just the same ole Raw time slot on Mondays and then Smack down Thursday right? Looks like tonight is gunna be my first time watching wrestling in almost a decade.

Well at least you gave it a shot. If you both want to give it one more, here's R-Truth as a complete bizarre psychopath, which has been the other great different angle this year -

Also, just so you know, Raw and Smackdown are two separate "brands" with a different roster/storylines so you probably won't hear much, if anything, about the Punk storyline.

Honestly, for your first dive back in, I might suggest you wait until Raw on Monday as it's the superior show, or at least keep that in mind in the event Smackdown doesn't quite live up to your expectations.

I think the Punk angle appeals most to those of us who've been watching and have grown frustrated with the way they push (or don't push) certain guys. Punk has pretty much been the poster boy of that frustration over the last few years. So seeing it finally acknowledged is refreshing.

R-Truth is maybe a half step behind Punk as the greatest thing going right now. The guy is playing an unhinged psychopath perfectly.

It's amazing what happens when Vince lets guys go off script. And yet, he's still so insecure that during Joey Style's "shoot", it's designed for him to be the heel because he's against "sports entertainment." Vince can't have the guy who's going against the WWE be cheered, even if they're expressing what the majority of the audience feels.

I'm gonna end this little rant here before I get into what a truly awful person Vince McMahon is, and how he's cannabalizing the business that took him from a piece of North Carolina trailer trash to a ridiculously wealthy puppet master.

yeah Punk's promo could seem quite regular to some, but if you were currently watching the state of the WWE it'd be easier to realize how huge that promo really is.

Just saying the words wrestling or wrestler are big red flags today. they dont want you to name any character who is no longer under contract either. and if you listen to his references he only names backstage people and guys who dont work for the company anymore.

he "broke" numerous rules and made light of it as he did it and thats why it was such a mind blowing moment at the time.

It might not have the intensity of the Austin 3:16 speech but this was his version.

ohio valley wrestling is based in louisville and CM punk got his start here. dude used to always come into where i worked 4 or 5 years ago and would tip like 50%, was cool as hell, and always had dimes with him.

i havent watched wrestling in years so its good to see that he not only made it to the big leagues but is causing all sorts of shit while being there.
