NFL Off Season 2012

some interesting coaching changes. among them:
Report: Bruce Arians to join Colts

While an assistant with the Ravens for the last four years, Chuck Pagano tried to stop Steelers offenses run by Bruce Arians at least twice a year.

Based on a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN, he must have liked what he saw. Schefter reports that Arians is headed to Indianapolis to become offensive coordinator of the Colts. It would seem reports of Ariansג€™ retirement after his split from the Steelers were greatly exaggerated.

Schefterג€™s report doesnג€™t address the status of current offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen. Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910 radio in Arizona, who also had a report on Arians heading to Indy, reports that heג€™ll be offered another job on Ariansג€™ staff. Thatג€™s significant because Christensen represents the last significant tie to Peyton Manning on the Colts coaching staff.

But Arians has a tie to Manning of his own. He was the Manningג€™s quarterback coach from 1998-2000, so those shaking the Magic 8-Ball to find out what this means for Manningג€™s future with the Colts probably are getting ג€œAsk Again Laterג€ when the triangle appears in the window.

Report: Pittsburgh Steelers tab former Chiefs coach Haley as next offensive coordinator

PITTSBURGH ג€” The Steelers will hire former Kansas City Chiefs coach Todd Haley to be their offensive coordinator, according to an ESPN report.

The move, first reported by 610 AM in Kansas City, has not yet been announced.

Haley will replace Bruce Arians, now with the Indianapolis Colts.

The 45-year-old Haley, fired by Kansas City on Dec. 13, went 19-26 in two-plus seasons with the Chiefs, leading them to the 2010 AFC West title.

He spent 10 seasons as an assistant before being hired by Kansas City. He was offensive coordinator for Arizona in 2007-08, helping lead the Cardinals to their only Super Bowl appearance.

Phone messages left for Haley by the Associated Press were not immediately returned.

The Steelers went 12-4 this season but lost the AFC North title to Baltimore on a tiebreaker.

The Chiefs were 5-8 when Haley was dismissed. His last game was a tough one. Kansas City lost, 37-10, to the New York Jets at the Meadowlands, and it was their fifth loss in six games. Kansas City committed 11 penalties for 128 yards in the performance, including a 15-yarder on Haley for unsportsmanlike conduct that may have sealed his fate.

The next day, he was fired.

ג€œTiming in these situations is always difficult. There never seems to be a right time,ג€ Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said at the time. ג€œWe just felt the inconsistent play the team has experienced throughout the season, including yesterdayג€™s game, made today the right day to do it.ג€

After three lopsided losses to start the season, Kansas City rattled off four straight wins and briefly pulled into a tie atop the AFC West. But that was followed by a home loss to previously winless Miami, the start of a disastrous six weeks in which the losses mounted.

ג€œWeג€™ve had one of those years where weג€™ve had injuries, and injuries to key players, but thatג€™s typical in the National Football League,ג€ Hunt said then. ג€œAs a team, you have to find a way to overcome that, and we just werenג€™t able to do that this year. Our play was up and down the entire season and at times it was up and down during a given game, and I think those contributed to our decision.ג€

Without a bye, the Steelers had to play a road game at Denver to open the postseason. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw for 289 yards and a touchdown, but the Steelers fell to the Broncos, 29-23, in overtime.

Haley is the son of Dick Haley, formerly the director of player personnel for the Steelers from 1971-1990.

NFL top 100 free agents: Saints have tough decisions

The New Orleans Saints, armed with their high-powered offense, had their Super Bowl dreams dashed in a divisional playoff loss in San Francisco. If they hope to make a another run at a second ring in the 2012 season, they'll need to take care of some lucrative business: Spending multimillions to lock up three irreplaceable offensive players.

While they're team immediately on the spot a little more than a month from the start of the NFL's unrestricted free agency (March 13), the hot position will be wide receivers.

Looking at how it was another team with a top passing game, the New York Giants that won it all on the strength of three talented wideouts, the marquee group of available receivers will be appealing to many other teams. A lucky 13 crack the top 100 unrestricted options, including a sensational six just in the top 25:

1. Drew Brees, QB, Saints. There's no Peyton Manning-like decision here. They need to re-sign him soon, because they need to free up the franchise tag to use on another key offensive cog.

2. Carl Nicks, G, Saints. The Saints broke the bank to lock up their other elite guard, Jahri Evans, and if a deal with Brees happens, they won't hesitate to designate Nicks their franchise playerג€”or at least give him Evans-type money for one year.

3. Ray Rice, RB, Ravens. Rice's production as a runner and receiver is what makes Baltimore's offense tick. Joe Flacco's favorite safety valve will be back somehow, as Baltimore will be ready to tag him.

4. Matt Flynn, QB, Packers. All signs point to Aaron Rodgers' ace backup getting paid for a starting gig in '12, a la two other former No. 2 Matts, Schaub (Michael Vick) and Cassel (Tom Brady). Reuniting with his former offensive coordinatorג€”Dolphins coach Joe Philbinג€”almost makes too much sense. He's not as splashy, however, for Miami, as trying to reel in Peyton Manning.

5. Mario Williams, DE, Texans. The fact that Houston's 3-4 defense still played at high level when he was on the shelf for the final 11 games (torn pectoral) should give pause to team officials before paying millions to retain the 2006 first overall pick. There would be plenty of teams, regardless of scheme, in hot pursuit.

6. Vincent Jackson, WR, Chargers. Every team that's in desperate need of a bona fide No. 1 receiver should be interested in what the 6-5 Jackson, likely gone from San Diego, can do for the entire offense with his ability to stretch the field and cause matchup issues in the red zone.

7. Marques Colston, WR, Saints. Colston is the less noisy version of Jackson. He may not have the same gamebreaking ability, but at 6-4, he's also a big target with better hands. He has proved to be especially clutch for Brees on third downs. It might be a challenge for New Orleans to pay its quarterback, him and Nicks.

8. Matt Forte, RB, Bears. Forte has made no secret he wants to be paid, and he was smart during the Pro Bowl to show teams that his knee isn't a issue. Chicago needs to keep the constant production of Forte.

9. Wes Welker, WR, Patriots. Don't expect one magnified missed connection with Brady to take away from his value as his go-to slot man. Welker deserves to get a lucrative deal, but may need to settle for a franchise tag.

10. Cliff Avril, DE, Lions. It's rare a 4-3 edge pass rusher of his caliber (a breakout 11 sacks in '11) hits the market, but Detroit may have not the salary-cap space to keep him on its strong line.

11. Carlos Rogers, CB, 49ers. Rogers took the one-year deal in San Francisco to prove he could be a top-notch corner, and didn't waste time in delivering a Pro Bowl season. The one concern in giving him a desired long-term extension is the fact he's 31. That could allow another team to splurge to take him away.

12. D'Qwell Jackson, ILB, Browns. He came back full force as an all-around playmaker just when it looked like an injury had derailed his career for good. Jackson likes the scheme and the team, so Cleveland needs to do the smart thing and at least franchise-tag him.

13. Jermichael Finley, TE, Packers. There's no question that Finley is part of the league's new breed of athletic, physical tight ends, but that doesn't help him if he can't catch the ball consistently. He's a candidate to be franchisedג€”if they can do it at the price that's less than $6 millionג€”but don't be surprised if Green Bay lets him walk.

14. Dwayne Bowe, WR, Chiefs. This free-agent class is loaded with big guys with big mitts, isn't it? Bowe's inconsistency is the reason he's behind the others. Still, looking at what Kansas City has, he is a good bet to be tagged.

15. Jeremy Mincey, DE, Jaguars. Jacksonville hasn't had many bright spots with its pass rush of late, so it was good to see Mincey break through off the edge (8 sacks). Now he'll be looking for appropriate compensation, with the Jaguars or someone else.

16. Brandon Carr, CB, Chiefs. Playing opposite the other, better known Brandonג€”Flowersג€”Carr has quietly delivered as an unheralded, well-rounded corner. He's tougher for the Chiefs to replace than Bowe is.

17. Cortland Finnegan, CB, Titans. Finnegan brings a feistiness to Tennessee's secondary, as well as fearlessness in physical one-on-one coverage. He's exactly the kind of corner Jeff Fisher could use for the Rams.

18. Chris Myers, C, Texans. Myers was exceptional as the anchor of Houston's zone-blocking scheme that paved the way for Arian Foster. With Williams and Foster (restricted) as free agents, he's priority No. 3.

19. Michael Bush, RB, Raiders. With Darren McFadden out for most of the second half, Bush took over as a great power runner, while also showing some receiving skills. It will require the franchise tag to keep another team from grabbing him.

20. Stephen Tulloch, ILB, Lions. Because re-signing Avril is a concern, Detroit may see its new defensive leader leave after just one year. He would be an ideal fit for the Eagles.

21. Calais Campbell, DE, Cardinals. When watching the 6-8, 300-pounder roam in Arizona's defense, he seems to be everywhere and doing everything as an end/linebacker hybrid. He's invaluable enough to be tagged.

22. Marshawn Lynch, RB, Seahawks. It's crazy to think Seattle will let him walk. Expect the team to take advantage of a very comfortable franchise-tag number for running backs (one year at $7.7 million).

23. Laurent Robinson, WR, Cowboys. There's a lot to like about Robinson (6-2, 194, great speed) as a rising star and with Dez Bryant and Miles Austin, there's a good chance he wears something other than a star on his helmet in '12.
The Saints' powerful offense could see some changes this offseason with Carl Nicks, Drew Brees and Marques Colston all set to become free agents. (AP Photo)

24. Stevie Johnson, WR, Bills. Johnson at this spot shows just how many terrific receivers there are available. Like Robinson, he's young (just 25) and would be No. 1 for teams, even though he would like to stay in Buffalo.

25. DeSean Jackson, WR, Eagles. The mercurial Jackson was a headache for Philadelphia, but every team is in the market for a speedster who can make an immediate impact as a big-play receiver and return man. The Cal product seems perfect for Oakland.

26. Brent Grimes, CB, Falcons

27. Robert Mathis, DE, Colts

28. Jared Gaither, T, Chargers

29. Scott Wells, C, Packers

30. Dashon Goldson, S, 49ers (franchise tag candidate)

31. Curtis Lofton, ILB, Falcons

32. Reggie Wayne, WR, Colts

33. Fred Davis, TE, Redskins

34. Brandon Lloyd, WR, Rams

35. Dan Connor, ILB, Panthers

36. Sione Pouha, DT, Jets

37. Ben Grubbs, G, Ravens

38. Josh Scobee, K, Jaguars (franchise tag candidate)

39. Erin Henderson, LB, Vikings

40. Tyvon Branch, S, Raiders

41. Jason Jones, DT, Titans

42. Steve Weatherford, P, Giants

43. Matt Prater, K, Broncos (franchise tag candidate)

44. David Hawthorne, ILB, Seahawks

45. Cory Redding, DT, Ravens

46. Jarret Johnson, OLB, Ravens

tony sparano is now the jets oc
Sparano Hears Firsthand Where Jets Need to Improve
By BEN SHPIGEL
Published: January 13, 2012

The philosophy espoused by Tony Sparano is, in his words, ג€œa little differentג€ from that of Brian Schottenheimer, his predecessor as the Jetsג€™ offensive coordinator. When asked Friday to describe that philosophy, Sparano used the word ג€œphysicalג€ in seven straight sentences. It was as if he were reading from cue cards held up by Coach Rex Ryan.

ג€œWeג€™re definitely like-minded people,ג€ said Ryan, and it was easy to imagine him smiling on the other end of the telephone line. Sparanoג€™s approach emphasizes power running and protecting the quarterback ג€” virtues that Ryan holds dear, and two of the Jetsג€™ primary shortcomings during a season that ended in on-field disappointment and off-the-field distress.

ג€œYou have to form an identity,ג€ Sparano said in a conference call, ג€œand I want to have an identity here offensively.ג€

The Jetsג€™ identity crisis dogged them all season, beginning with their misguided attempt to expand their offense and lasting all the way through Mark Sanchezג€™s 67 dropbacks in a Week 16 loss to the Giants. The Jets managed only three plays of at least 40 yards (none by a wide receiver), fewest in the N.F.L., so it was not surprising that Sparano, whose lone season calling plays came in 2006 for Dallas, accentuated their need to be explosive.

His plan to revive the Jetsג€™ offense could leave an unambiguous imprint on Sanchez, who buckled under pressure and a mediocre rushing attack. In theory, their running game would improve, making the Jets less reliant on Sanchez, a strategy that ushered them to two A.F.C. championship game appearances.

On Friday, Sparanoג€™s introduction only temporarily deflected the attention from the entwined issues that the Jets still must confront: their locker room discord and Sanchezג€™s psyche. A torrent of criticism has engulfed Sanchez since the season ended, much of it coming from unnamed teammates who blasted his work ethic, leadership skills and development. Sanchez has not publicly addressed his detractors, but Ryan and General Manager Mike Tannenbaum defended him on Friday, saying they had no reservations about his ability.

ג€œHe has all the attributes and traits we want,ג€ Tannenbaum said.

Sparanoג€™s job is to refine those attributes and traits to help Sanchez become a more effective quarterback. Coaching against the Jets, Sparano said he formed a positive opinion of Sanchez, whose arm and athleticism he praised. He has yet to review much tape, but Sparano intends to apply to Sanchez the same approach that he developed while working in Dallas with Tony Romo and in Miami with Chad Henne.

ג€œGet them back to Square 1 and break them back from a fundamental standpoint,ג€ Sparano said.

Sparano was talking about more than Sanchezג€™s mechanics, which seemed affected by the neck stinger he dealt with over the final six weeks of the season. Sparano intends to go over with Sanchez all 26 of his turnovers. As he seeks to improve Sanchezג€™s clock management and ball security, Sparano wants to understand his thought process during those situations and then set about correcting his mistakes.

Ryan has already begun his own self-evaluation. He will continue to encourage his players to express themselves, but not behind the cloak of anonymity. ג€œThatג€™s not being a Jet, so thatג€™s going to change without question,ג€ Ryan said.

He vowed to spend more time in position meetings and in the locker room, trying to regain the feel that he lacked last season. For Ryan, trying to restore harmony to a locker room loaded with fissures will be the most challenging task of his coaching career.

Dealing with the locker room issues could be easier for Sparano, who said he had no preconceived notions of the personalities he would encounter. Sparano characterized his personality as ג€œno-nonsense,ג€ and he is a disciplinarian in the mold of his mentor, Bill Parcells.

ג€œThis is a show-me business, a show-me game,ג€ Sparano said. ג€œOnce these players get here, itג€™ll be a blank piece of paper as far as Iג€™m concerned.ג€

Sparanoג€™s experience dealing with a mercurial receiver in Miami, Brandon Marshall, should help him with Santonio Holmes, who was benched after a skirmish in the Jetsג€™ huddle on Jan. 1 and whose relationship with Schottenheimer was fractured.

The Jets publicly professed that Schottenheimer would return unless he was hired as the Jaguarsג€™ head coach. But in multiple conversations after the season ended, Schottenheimer expressed a desire for what Tannenbaum characterized as a ג€œfresh start.ג€

ג€œIt was a mutual decision,ג€ Tannenbaum said.

As Schottenheimer, who interviewed Friday at the University of Alabama, awaited a resolution from Jacksonville (he did not get the job), the Jets interviewed two potential replacements ג€” the former offensive line coach Bill Callahan, who left for the Cowboys, and Sparano.

ג€œWhen we met with Tony, I was like, ג€˜Wow,ג€™ ג€ Ryan said. ג€œI was blown away.ג€

EXTRA POINTS

Sanjay Lal, the Raidersג€™ receivers coach, was hired to fill the same position with the Jets, replacing Henry Ellard.

Randy Moss says he is coming back

"If anybody is in the market for a 35-year-old receiver who was once the best in the game, this is your day.

Randy Moss has announced that he is planning a comeback, according to Pro Football Talk.

"I just wanna go to a team and play some football," Moss said on a Ustream.tv.

Moss, a four-time All-Pro, said he left the game because of family issues but said he has gotten the all-clear to comeback.

"Faith, family, and football, that's my M.O., bro," Moss said on the telecast. "Your boy be back for the upcoming season."

The 6-5 Moss had 954 catches for 153 TDs and 14,858 yards."

Reggie Wayne Open To Playing For Patriots
13th February, 2012 - 5:46 pm
NFL.com - Reggie Wayne is headed for free agency and would prefer to re-sign with the Colts.

However, the 11-year veteran appears open to signing with the rival Patriots.

NFL Network analyst Willie McGinest told the Boston Herald that the receiver agreed with his suggestion that the Patriots would be a perfect team for his skill-set.

When asked if he would like to play for the Patriots, McGinest told The Herald that Wayne replied, "Who wouldn't want to play there?"

Patriots coach Bill Belichick has raved about Wayne in the past, telling The Boston Globe back in 2009 that he was the best receiver his team faces each season.

Eagles plan to franchise DeSean Jackson
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal

DeSean Jackson isnג€™t going anywhere, at least not until the Eagles can get something for him in return.

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports the team will place the franchise tag on Jackson. They may still look to see what Jackson could attract in a trade.

The news doesnג€™t come as a surprise. It would only be a surprise if the team and Jackson work out a long-term deal at any point this year. It is far more likely Jackson plays under his one-year contract in Philadelphia or gets dealt to another team.

Jackson said shortly after the season he would be fine playing with the tag. If thatג€™s the case, he would be wise to sign it quickly so the Eagles canג€™t rescind the tag if they fail find a trade partner.

Philadelphia has twice rescinded the franchise tag in similar situations. They did it with defensive tackle Corey Simon in 2005 and Jeremiah Trotter in 2002.

The Eagles have room to carry Jacksonג€™s salary, which is expected to be less than $10 million. Despite all the difficulties he had last season, ultimately Jackson is too valuable to simply let him walk away.

Especially when 2012 is the ultimate ג€œwin or elseג€ season for coach Andy Reid.

I highly doubt that Houston would get Manning. Schuab is not the best and was injured, but that would be way too much money to put into a position where you are already comfortable at.

Brady to Lloyd could be nice, but he isn't really the deep threat you guys need.

Cris Carter, Randy Moss engage in good olג€™ feud

Randy Moss has announced his intention of returning to the NFL after one season off and heג€™s attempting a comeback with the gloves off.

Moss fired back on Cris Carter, his former teammate with the Minnesota Vikings, and our friend Kevin Seifert, who masterfully runs the NFC North blog over at ESPN.com, did a terrific job of sizing up the action.

News on Moss has been out for a couple days and Carter weighed in on it this morning on ג€œMike & Mike in the Morningג€on ESPN Radio. Carter had some very pointed remarks regarding Moss and his recent history in the NFL.

ג€œThe one thing you have to address with Randy Moss is not a conditioning thing,ג€ Carter said, brushing aside concerns about where or not Moss can still be a legitimate vertical threat. ג€œItג€™s not an age thing. It needs to be addressed. I believe itג€™s the elephant in the room. Itג€™s that thing called quit.

ג€œAnd Randy, not like any other superstar Iג€™ve met, he has more quit in him than any of those other players. So I need to addresses that. Thatג€™s what [New England Patriots coach Bill] Belichick did when he brought him over from Oakland. He told him he wasnג€™t going to have it.

ג€œBut Randy, when things donג€™t go well, like no other player Iג€™ve ever been around or associated with, he has a quit mechanism in him thatג€™s huge. That needs to be addressed before he signs with any team.ג€

Wow.

Thatג€™s what we call dropping a bomb. Carter makes some valid points and all you have to reference back to is how Moss handled his return to Minnesota in 2010 when the Vikings traded for him and then he completely let the team down in every imaginable way. It was embarrassing and it led to a quick end for Brad Childress.

Moss must have heard it or heard about it because he came back firing with both barrels on his new Twitter account.

ג€œits sad how u stroked ur own ego when u were suppose to b my mentor!then u wonder why karma bites u in the ass! #goodlukwhof,ג€ Moss wrote.

Wow.

So, there you have Moss telling Carter what comes around goes around, especially when Pro Football Hall of Fame voting comes around every February. Carter was shut out from Canton again this year. One of the complaints against Carter is he was rarely the No. 1 wide receiver on his own team, and certainly Moss overshadowed Carter when they were teammates together with the Vikings.

Later, Moss attempted to smooth it over a little.

ג€œCc no matter I still luv u bruh,ג€ Moss tweeted.

Carter made points worth pondering: Will Moss be able to find a team willing to overlook some real flaws in him? Or was he a quitter one too many times?

Big no to Vincent Jackson or Colston to the 9ers. Paying top tier money for ageing and injured guys who have spent their careers only flirting with being top talents on high powered offensive teams is a major fail.

Stock up on second and third tier guys that fit your scheme (e.g. Carlos Rogers last year Donte Whitner last year, Justin Smith when he was a FA, Ahmad Brooks when he came from Cincy, etc., etc.) and hope one of them breaks out for you. I can't even remember the last time a big time FA (top money guy at the time) put a team over the top.

He is not the greatest deep threat, but Lloyd was a good deep threat that yea in Denver with McDaniels.. And I am guessing Pats could get him cheaper cause McDaniels is over there now.
