yeah, that line exactly. most of it's just on gangsta rap in general though but wu so prominent in the genre you get the feeling de la wouldn't like them at that point in time, but who's to say..Versive wrote:Yeah, if it weren't for the intro where explains he's owed for his feature on Grind Date, you wouldn't even know he was dissing them.
I've also always thought there were some subliminal Wu disses on Stakes is High. "The only Italians you know is iceys" and such, but that's one of my favorite albums of all time so I never really sweat it.

Possibly, but I doubt that. The Wu represented the true MC from the days of a Cold Crush standpoint. If you dissin that, you dissin' yaself & the culture. The impact they made was meteorific. There's no perfect path to greatness.Versive wrote:Yeah, if it weren't for the intro where explains he's owed for his feature on Grind Date, you wouldn't even know he was dissing them.

^Oh, I already had both songs on mp3. I meant the physical copy. Thanks though.
I think they definitely had the utmost respect for the Wu as MCs. Aside from what you mentioned there was the whole Prince Paul-RZA connection.
I mean if I had to really break it down, I'd say that more than anything they were just poking fun at the seriousness of it all. Wu popularized the whole mafioso shit at that time and De La definitely saw that and was like "Yo, we're from Long Island. You aint Italian. Half the people we know are Italians." It's a funny little jab at the whole trend.45ReC wrote:Possibly, but I doubt that. The Wu represented the true MC from the days of a Cold Crush standpoint. Is that website active? I tried to order some cds but the page was broken.Versive wrote:All of his stuff is for sale via the Fame Labs website. I posted 2 loosies on page 1.
Here's a sampler for the mixtape God in the Ghetto, which I consider his best release: http://www.famelabsmusic.com/media/Fame ... tto_v1.zip If I remember correctly this includes like 8 of the 16 tracks.
Never mind, I received prompt email replies saying the store was temporarily down.bignormy wrote:Is that website active? I tried to order some cds but the page was broken.Versive wrote:All of his stuff is for sale via the Fame Labs website. I posted 2 loosies on page 1.

Yeah, around that period De La did a pretty in depth interview where they said they would praise say, Raekwon for the artistry, but not the subject matter. They bought up the need for more balance, that around the mid-90s the radio and tv was dominated by materialistic rap, they mentioned Nas actually (even on Illmatic you have lines like 'be having dreams that I'm a gangster').

^^ cool, thanks for clearing that up. yeah i was about to say there's no way wu tang was excluded from de la's opinions on stakes is high.. i think it's directed at all gangsta rap.. even nas. 'fear of a black tangent' as busdriver would say.. it's definitely weird though cause they're both so great. you wouldn't happen know where to find that interview nowadays would you?

I had tons of magazines that I threw away (stupidly), I don't think that interview was in an American mag, I think it was most likely the 100th issue of Hiphop Connection (HHC), since they were on the first cover I think (or one of the earliest issues) they were interviewed for their anniversary issue. It's definitely that magazine and probably the 100th issue. Maybe wrong on the issue number but they're on the cover.
I haven't read it for over ten years but they mentioned stuff like how crime rappers don't change their subject matter, like 'You may have described your life on your first lp, up to getting signed, but are you trying to say your life hasn't changed?', how the whole crime mentality is bullshit in real life, a dead end. BTW- I paraphrased the bit about Rae, they just said something like they would praise him for the poetry (implying not his subject matter), but the Wu weren't directly criticised.
Actually, on a tangent, in 97 / 98 there was a Jungle Brothers interview in an indie mag where they mentioned the prevalence of gangsta rap, mentioning things like their sons knowing all the words to 'Who Shot Ya' if it came on, but also how something like Nas' 'Black Girl Lost' is a beautiful song or something. Masta Ace did that 'Ya Hardcore' track I think because he was so disappointed to see kids singing along to Mad Lion's 'Shoot to Kill' or something at a Zulu Nation event.

Alright, this is really weird. I was checking out this blog http://backpackeressence.blogspot.com/ and for some reason was drawn to this one single by a group I've never heard of called Da Last Future. http://www.4shared.com/rar/UuahI6xu/Da_ ... _Hell.html? (you gotta sign up but it's free and trust me it's worth it just for this single)
So I download it and put it on and who do I hear, but the fuckin Sunz of Man. Now maybe I'm just totally out of the loop on this, but I had no idea Sunz were doing music in 1994 let alone putting out records under a different name. It looks like this downolad is missing one track (Mental Combat II), but this is quite a find nonetheless, for me at least.
Any of yous guys known about this? If so, anybody got that missing track?

I don't know anywhere near as much as you guys, but I think Sunz of Man were together before they released their first music and probably were recording. All I know is little bits of info like them being put together by Rza I think (?) and Death Be the Penalty originally being a Sunz track but they decided it should be a Shabazz solo due to the strength of his first verse, or something?
I found this blog through a google search, but a lot of the links seem to use a russian filehost and are down, anyone used this blog?

During which part of the process are you having a problem? It's a pain in the ass, but I haven't had any problems that I can remember.

When I look at the instructions, it suggests that I should get a few different options / locations to download from. I don't see any of that, just normal Russian text with no actual links. I'll try again later. I found one of the early Sunz singles on another blog, don't have the others or their first lp anymore.
It's a little tricky/shady since you can't tell what anything says, but there is a hyperlink in the text block that takes you to a page with like 5 ads. You click one and then keep your eye on the timer that appears up top. When that runs out you click the new link that appears up there. Then enter the captcha number and press enter.

Sunz of Man record from 1994 when they recorded under the name Da Last Future. A guy on discogs is asking almost $1200 for this. http://www.discogs.com/Da-Last-Future-D ... se/1333260

yeah Sunz Of Man was Da Last Future before they became Sunz Of Man. i believe Shabazz the Disciple and 7th Ambassador was in the group at this time too.. some of the tracks they recorded back then can be found on the compilation album "The First Testament".

that track "Livin' in Hell" is also the song Hell Razah speaks about Raekwon and Ghostface biting his style from on their "Heaven & Hell" and a battle track they did which they ran with for "Meth vs. Chef".
this is on the song "Audiobiography" by Hell Razah. btw, www.wu-international.com just posted the first Razah interview since he got sick and it also includes a new mixtape
