My area is shit so I don't even have 5. I think the closest thing to me that is dope is Butta Verses. I heard the new joint he did with Lord Finesse and liked it.

Thread should be your top 5 current artists period if you want it to be a) successful b)interesting.

i was really just trying to find regional acts, the ones that are not "popular" on the internet....like Tha Joker and Kevin Gates. Those guys are massive in their towns/area, but the blogs show no love for them at all.

I'll play.

Kingdom Crumbs - http://http://kingdomcrumbs.bandcamp.com/
Jesus Chris Willis - http://jesuschris.bandcamp.com
Fresh Espresso - http://freshespresso.bandcamp.com/album/bossalona
Mash Hall - http://mashhall.bandcamp.com/album/they-la-soul

Just the ones I've been listening to mostly lately. Left off Nacho Picasso and Shabazz Palaces for obvious reasons.

1 and 4 are not "from" our area. You gonna claim Fat Joe too since he lives in Miami?

I don't even know of 5 local artists.

Actually, I remember reading recently about some local guys getting snatched up on cocaine charges, so maybe I should be looking into their shit.

Regardless I think the primary intent of the thread was to point out upcoming talent or more specifically artists who've only achieved popularity at the local level, meaning city and statewide.

Birdman and Wayne might live in Miami, but they're widely considered New Orleans rappers as that's where they're from, where they first achieved popularity and what they've repped for most of their careers. Similarly, Fat Joe is a product of the Bronx.

And what, no Gunplay or Spaceghostpurrp? Your Miami list sucks.

Yea my DC friends are all about him. I like his voice and the gun talk, but can't respect him after the pointless Keef diss and the pink jeans in the Warning video (which is a song I kinda dig) and the flailing homo rap hands. And the ASAP-biting Glizzy Gang bullshit. Too many red flags.

I'll give him a bonus point for doing a track with Jose Guapo, who might be the most slept on shit right now.

Must be a newer cat from DC.

I'd say as far as just DC goes in terms of who's names come up the most I hear about:

Diamond District
Fat Trel
Tabi Bonney
Wale
Kokayi

Honorable mentions: Low Budget Crew, Pro'Verb, Laelo Hood, Lyriciss, The Package, Whitefolkz, Enoch, Substantial, FAR EXP, Navi, Doe Cigapom, K-Beta, Javier Starks, Akil Nadir, Head Roc. I know I'm forgetting some folks.

im pretty convinced Whitefolkz is where Riff Raff got his whole swag from...honestly. its kind of mind blowing how similar they are.

also check out Lightshow from DC and Uptown Pacco. Lightshow isn't bad at all, and Pacco reminds me lil Durk from chicago sort of, and I heard Pacco is being managed by Trel's old manager P.

lightshow

uptown pacco

Yeah, there's a swarm of newer kids in the DMV coming out like you've named I haven't heard of. But that's common shit though. The scene here gets underestimated in terms of how many artists in the area. And plus sooooooo many of these kids will reside in parts of the area on the outskirts or in the city doing some productive shit.

Whitefolkz is a real chill and honest cat. Funny, that you make that Riff Raff comparison.

i honestly feel like DC could easily do what chicago did this past summer....just one person to set it off, then the flood gates open.

but yeah, i dont doubt that Whitefolkz is really chill...from interviews he seems like a really good dude. but you cant deny the Riff Raff comparison.

If you count Wale.....Tabi and a few others, then you can say somebody already did. But its more than just those few artists. Besides, hip hop in DC struggled a bit in competition with go-go. Its like way back in the day for you to even be respected as an emcee, you had to rock with a go-go band (some DC hip hop history for ya). But at the same time, the same argument about who's going to be the next to do such and such for DC always comes up. I actually think if it was more L.A., Chicago, and NY (which is the way some things are going), you'll see more of artists commercially and independently thriving off their success. Its very possible. The problem is the outlets for everyone become slim to none in certain markets.

oh im more than familiar with how DC hiphop works, and its place amongst go-go etc... considering not many people in DC really fuck with Wale, i would say no that he really maters amongst that city and making it more than what it already is, it does look like he is making a personal effort with brining together himself, glizzy and trel recently....also about Tabi, he couldn't pull a real honest crowd of "fans" out to one of his shows in DC.
