Kong: Skull Island (2017) Trailer

Post by Spartan »

If you've ever wondered what it would be like if Apocalypse Now had a gorilla as big as a skyscraper in it, then you're in luck.

This shit looks great:

Glad they're not hiding behind any build-up for a big reveal like Godzilla.

Godzilla was fun.

Aren't they eventually going Godzilla vs Kong with these franchises?

Reviews are in now.

1 star in The Guardian but mostly everyone else seems to agree that its good but not great.

I usually ignore movies like this or end up wishing I did, but for some reason I'm excited for this one. Maybe because the marketing seems to suggest it won't be a children's movie like Pacific Rim and the other similar stinkers.

the center mass seems mostly reviews like this, which I'm totally cool with. i don't need this to be a good movie, i need this to be a good spectacle

I liked it. The film had good action and nice locations. Only complaints would be that the jokes fell flat and the lizardthings weren't designed very well.

it was good spectacle as I hoped

Agree with CQ, the lizards could've been a little cooler. I could've used another big thing for Kong to fight too. But what's in there was fun, and there were even a few moments that felt iconic for the monster movie canon.
It seems like there's a bit of influence of Planet Earth in some of the creature stuff, which is great. Kong slurping down the giant squid and the saw-beek birds taking the dude apart against the red sky were my favorite moments.
The handsome leads were predictably bland and useless, the good character actors you were psyched to see in there predictably stole the show. Ironically the leads got the least screentime and character development out of all the humans, it feels like somebody wrote them in after the bulk of the script was put together simply because the studio thinks you need good looking people to anchor shit like this. At least they didn't overburden it with a forced love story.
Shame that Wigham and Reiley are definitely not coming back while Hiddlesdick and Bree Larson are definitely are.
I'm geeked for the kaiju universe they're setting up.
I never really cared about seeing Marvel characters on screen but after the allusions to Gheedorah, Mothra and Rodan I understand how Marvel nerds must feel about it. They're striking the right tone for it too, this one had a much better balance of the obligatory cautionary 'folly of man' messaging and the understanding that watching giant things fuck shit up should be fun first and allegorical second.

Not sure if you guys watched the same film as I did. Other the big fight at the end, I was mostly underwhelmed and somewhat bored with it.

Guys, this was fucking fun as hell. Can't believe that Spartan of all people didn't enjoy this.
Its 2 hours of giant monster mayhem and ADD as hell in the best way. I mean, Kong going HAM on an entire squad of helicopters was arguably a better action set-piece than anything in all 3+ hours of Peter Jacksons King Kong, and that shit happens in the first 15 minutes of the movie.
As soon as they were flying the squad of helicopters into a hurricane with The Stooges' Down on the Street playing in the background I was all in.

I love how that was shot to make you think at first that the squid was attacking Kong but no, Kong was just having a snack.
Pretty sure it meant to be a bit of an homage to Oldboy as well.

I wanted to like it.

Hiddleston and Olsen were severely miscast in this; the former was completely unconvincing as the badass tracker, while the latter appeared to only take pics and stick her bust out. The film went the completely opposite direction of Jackson's Kong, which suffered from too much exposition, and so this instalment felt like it was written on the back of a postage stamp. Still felt uneven, regardless. Made the same mistake as Suicide Squad being ever so reliant on the classic rock selection of that era and everything else took a backseat. I dug the whole Apocalypse Now visuals and even the Cannibal Holocaust homage, but the film brought nothing new to the table and I was sadly bored by the whole thing.

Yeah, it was fine for what it was, but not exactly breaking any new ground. I wasn't bored, but I wasn't shitting my pants either.

Chopper scene was really great, but just about everyone surviving the helicopter crashes unless they were pulverized by Kong was a bit too much. I also loved that breathing poison gas had no adverse effects at all. I was okay with the lizards, they were about par for the course. I didn't have much hope for Hiddlestone going in, but he availed himself in my eyes. Larson was essentially an afterthought. John C Reilly felt really out of place given the tone up to that point of the film, but he seemed to add a little levity and prevented the film from taking itself too seriously.

They learned from Godzilla that they needed to show much more of the monster and far earlier in the film so that was a plus. I'll check for the next one.
