The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2017)

Not sure what Kermode was on with his mostly indifferent summary, but this turned out to be an immensely well crafted horror film by Troll Hunter director, André Øvredal. It's almost a rarity these days when major characters in a horror display intelligence. The fact that (the always underrated) Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch take this unusual film seriously are one of the reasons why this works in a major way. Worth noting Olwen Catherine Kelly is mesmerising as the mysterious cadaver. Gorehounds will get a kick out of this, but for me, what really won me was the level of atmospheric dread. Highly recommended.

It Comes at Night (2017) - I had managed to avoid knowing much about it going in and left the theater satisfied. Can see the reactions to the film have been split between reviewers who don't really like/know horror who are praising it (The Guardian actually had to invent the term post-horror to categorize it), and audience who were expecting CGI-monsters to jump @ the screen and therefore want their money back. I would recommend this to most horrorfans except for the Walking Dead/Twilight type of crowd, but best to beware of the slightly misleading marketing. Perhaps people who like survivalist films will enjoy this the most. Aside from the minimal exposition I'm very confused about key plotpoints, but that was the intention from what I gather, as a means to up the paranoia I suppose. With this film and Get Out, It Follows and a few others it seems US indiehorror is the new wave of quality scares after the demise of a the golden years of French gore.

Wouldn't rule out France just yet, Julia Ducournau's Raw looks very promising.

I've seen it, and I liked it a lot. Don't go into it thinking it's going to be one of those movies with a huge bodycount. Like a lot of good horror movies it's got a great theme that the gory elements really help explore. Don't want to go any deeper than that, but it's really worth a watch. Probably in my top ten of the year thusfar.

update: worst movie I've ever seen in my life... absolutely awful... fun if you go with the right people that get how bad it is because science basically refutes every scene from being possible but it's fun from a bad "horror" movie angle...

I think I have problems giving films leeway... I just don't get how people are swimming down 47 meters in shark infested waters to save these girls... If this was Mexico they'd be taking off before the cage hit the floor... I'm probably just not the right judge of new movies... The last movie I saw in theaters was the gift (to put it into perspective) about 2 years ago... And absolutely loved that... 47 was fun I'll definitely say that... Brought a few beers and the vape pen and am definitely happy to see it, but I had comped casino tickets... Idk I would advocate paying the full 12.50 a ticket for this one unless you're with the right crowd... There were about 12 people in the theater with us and it quickly became mystery science theater with everybody making comments and laughing at some of the absurdity... One of the best was "tommy can you hear me?" Repeatedly being sang... every time they would shout to Taylor "taylor can you hear me?"... Biggest problems would be them sending the girls down in a rusty ass cage like this but having the most high tech underwater walkie talkie system of all time... Anything else would probably be spoiler... In reality I was probably too hard on it and that might be because the theater I was in really seemed to all be on the same page with its absurdity... Would still go see it again if free...

The next movie I'm going to torture myself with will most likely be happy death day lol so I've clearly got time for the bullshit

Actually enjoyed Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, so I'm kind of expecting a fun dumb movie by the same director with Happy Death Day.

Elle (2017)
You can definitely see why Paul Verhoeven's latest film was difficult to make in Hollywood, since it's a bit too rapey. Despite its convoluted structure and predicable ending, I very much enjoyed this one. Isabelle Huppert was rightfully Oscar nominated for this; shame she didn't win, though. She does a great job of playing a vile bitch yet making her understandably sympathetic.

Logan (2017)
Better than the usual Marvel fare. Never cared too much for Jackman's Wolverine in the past, but he clicked for me much better in this latest instalment. The villains were mostly inconsequential and played second fiddle compared to the focus between Logan, Xavier and X-23, but we can't win them all.

Barton fink is cool film

last night in order
War On the Planet of the Apes 2017
having never seen a single movie of the reboots I saw this because i had the evening off. surprisingly good for what it is. if you're willing to buy some cheese I can see why you guys like these movies so much. so after the movie I went to my local redbox and got the following

Dawn of Planet of the Apes 2014
pretty decent. the animation isn't as good as War of course but it's still pretty good. pretty good story for what it is.

Bridge of Spies 2015
Pretty good film. I'm not crazy about it. interesting story. interesting characters. Tom hanks doing that extraordinary real people schtick. pretty good idea for him. the Coen bros helped write this which should help show how well the movie is drawn

Snowden 2016
pretty decent. doesn't flow right but then again Oliver stone doesn't really give a fuck about flow at all. dudes mantra is just showing shit which is fine but I prefer something else. the story is hard to give a fuck about the people. I mean I have felt something similar working in bankruptcy defense firm (banks attorneys) but like... whatever. hot garbage in some sense.

Dracula untold 2014
kinda sweet. not great not bad. a bunch of interesting and cool ideas for the subject matter but then the way it's unveiled and how they pieced it together is kinda weak. some weird decisions by the characters (and how the story is shaped by them) and odd senses of pacing and identity are really what cap this movie from being something really really sweet overall. and for a movie with so much atmospheric potential the atmosphere is pretty pedestrian really.

the beguiled (2017)

excellent atmospheric period piece, almost claustraphobic as it has one setting and 8 or so characters. could easily have been a play. with almost no score, excellent sound design and only natural light, it makes you feels like you are really in a civil war era plantation home. meaty roles for the main characters and the actors are up to the task. nice to see colin ferrell excel here after true detective crap. the young newcomer "main" character amy does a great job. amazing job of building tension. almost a 12 angry men level exploration of group dynamics. i think it's a better overall work than coppolla's lost in translation. 9/10.

muppet treasure island (1996)

tim curry 7/10

muppets from space (1999)

has a lot of trouble finding any sort of rhythm. still has some big laughs and it s lot of fun, but overall a low point for the muppets. excellent disco-based soundtrack. 5/10

rosemary's baby (1968)

i don't see why ruth gordon won so much praise/an oscar for her performance here. the big reveal is still just so great. the dad from beethoven, that dog/kids movie, plays the hunky dr. hill. 8/10

Ghost In The Shell - Oh man did they fuck this up bad, so so so bad. I was rooting for it too. ScarJo casting didn't particularly bother me and there was no reason for this to not at least be a proficient dumb scifi actioner, but they couldn't even pull that off. Completely mangled the core concept and replaced it with a dumb generic idea, ripped off visual aspects without giving them any of the thematic impact of the original, boring action scenes, etc etc.. It's so dumb that the plot actually goes out of its way to emphasize the white-washing of the lead. Kitano speaking Japanese through the whole thing is maybe the only redeeming aspect.

ok let's just grant those things. it's pretty cool. I was surprisingly satisfied. the mood is excellent. the execution is solid.

live by night 2016
surprisingly good movie. I liked this one quite a bit. amazing wardrobe. interesting story. mostly really good music. good acting. good direction. decent photography. noteworthy photography in the sense that a lot of the shots and sequences aren't just stock gangster shit. at least that I can remember. some good portrait (subject) shots here.

valerian whatever whatever 2017
kinda cool kinda dumb. has some really sweet comic-vein type shit and some pretty dumb comic-vein type shit and then a bunch of weak children movie shit. some of the shit really ought to have been expanded on cause it was cool and has coolness potential. I'm kind of surprised this is a besson movie because he does stylized but sometimes muted violence but here it's just like... eh. God. you spend a bunch of time not watching anything worth watching because the agenda was made to appeal to 12 yr olds. not that I know anything about the source material. the pearl people are really sweet though. but even if I was 12 I wouldn't buy the chemistry between the two leads. the chick is hot for a young chick. Clive has either been mass capped here or has just morphed into a whole nother animal since he's been doing TV shows for the past umpteen years. I can't tell which. I hope it's the former.

I enjoyed Valerion a lot. Visually it's phenomenal, as good as Guardians and at some points up there with Speed Racer. It was clunky and dumb too, but no worse than most other comic movies, and unlike with Marvel and DC you never feel like you're watching the next inevitable iteration of a product line. Besson supposedly wanted to make this all his life and his enthusiasm is palpable, there is so much excitement and glee in the sequences where he can let the imagery and world building run wild. He's just not great at writing dialogue and working out plot intricacies.

The dude playing Valerian was the biggest weakness imo, he's just not very convincing as a wise-cracking action hero. Cara Delavigne was pretty ok, but she can't carry the movie alone. They made me appreciate how much Bruce Willis and Mill Jovovich did for the Fifth Element - also a fun dumb movie, but having good leads really helped hold it together.

Yeah I seriously do not understand spending 180 million on a movie and getting a C-List actress and a D-List lead actor who isn't even good looking no homo.
At least Jupiter Ascending had Mila and Elf Tatum

I was thinking of who they could cast instead and Ryan Reynolds/Tessa Thompson could've knocked this shit out of the park.

re valerian
180 million on this shit? say what? there must be some sort of international buzz or something. I mean I just don't see the justification in investment considering the acting and story details (especially dialogue). this could have felt more epic too. maybe it was heavily cut down but with all the different locations and potential for grand ideas this ought to have felt more epic in my opinion. where is the grand space opera in outer space sequence? there is none. a lot of the environments and creature/culture designs come off as second rate to me. especially when I think about 180 million dollar budget (not like I know shit a out movie budgets)

manchester by the sea (2016)

beautiful, complex, nuanced, funny, authentic, devastating, great use of music, worthy of all the accolades it received 9/10

moana (2016)

an impressive disney musical when most have been forgettable in recent years. didn't know that lin-manuel miranda did most of the songs. really moving music, visuals and story. some weak plot points. better than inside out IMO. 8/10

logan (2017)

i don't understand why people were talking it up, this movie was really bad. not even worth a watch. visual effects were bad. the music was absolutely horrendous. what were they thinking? didn't connect with the kids, weak villains, just dumb. 2/10

2017 Atomic Blonde
shit is pretty fucking dope. Theron does what Theron do and the action here feels fantastic. support cast is mostly really sweet. combine that with some surprisingly good espionage entanglement. then yeah. pretty fucking sweet movie. has a surprisingly nice variety of moods and textures both expositionally and action wise.
and the feel where they're building on wounds sustained from fight to fight actually plays really well for bringing you in to the reality of the thing and giving you that oft under expressed dimension of espionage films where these people have tremendous will power military training etc

how she's cued in on guns while fighting but they don't spoon feed it to you.

this movie isn't exactly the godfather but it certainly rewards the observant audience member

The Circle (2017)

Half-assed and laughable attempt at a Crichton-esque tech thriller. Hanks does his best impressions of Steve Jobs and Satan and his performance is the only real noteworthy highlight here. Main star, Emma Watson struggles and fails to carry this movie and chews her way in every scene. She is fucking terrible. Better off watching Black Mirror or last year's Nerve; at least that movie was entertaining enough with its poking fun at retarded Starbucks millennials. Another Netflix stinker.
