Top 50 Hip Hop Album Of All Time?

Post by stype_ones »

Hip Hop, in terms of albums, is in it's mid 30's. It's crazy that being born in the late 70's, my life's timeline has coincided with the timeline of recorded Hip Hop. Obviously I was too young for the start, but my brother was born in 1973 so I have an advanced experience over some of my friends who are the same age but maybe didn't have that older brother influence. My very first Hip Hop experience, as far as I can remember, is Beat Street ( My Mother took my brother and I to see it in the theater because he was enamored) and the book Subway Art. So I come from an early stage of the game, but to be fair, my first real true awareness of what was really going on didn't come until around 1987-88. Even then I was crazy young, but around my brother and friends so I was very much aware.

My only reason for that bit of information is that I truly can understand how many great albums came out over the last 30 years. Not that others can't appreciate, but I do know from then. That's why my question is top 50. Seems like a lot of albums, but damn, there are hundreds of amazing albums since the mid 80's. If you're in the top 50, you must be something special.

To me, this album is very special and if I ever get around to making a list, I believe this is in the top 50. So unique and creative, so important. 93 Til Infinity the single has to go down as one of the GOAT tracks in Hip Hop History, but for real, the entire album is a magnum opus. Do you agree?

I'd have to actually write out a list to see, but probably. I'd take Fear Itself over this and maybe No Need For Alarm, but Hiero 93-94 was real special.

Yeah, amazing.

That's why it kind of hit me cause I was thinking, you can start writing out albums and get to 35-40 in an eye blink. Being in the top 50 is special. Shit, being in the top 100 is special but if it makes the top 50 it's very special.

I bet if you wrote down all your favorites from 88-95, you'd have way over 100. It adds up quick, especially when you get to 93-94.

to your point 93 til infinity might not have even been the best album of the day it was released and might not be in the top ten of the fall of 93...the depth back then was utterly insane

as good as 93 is it is not a top 50 album and may not be top 100 which again is mind boggling that an album that great may not crack the top 100 of all time in a genre that had a window of not even 15 years where an album could have come out and contained a reasonable expectation of being better than 93 til infinity is

I guess this comes down to the age old scenario where you have to take a step back and ask, am I talking my FAVORITE albums, or am I trying to be objective with my list?

Gloss, I focused on your top 50, because that is the initial question. Objectively, I see your point. When taking all things into consideration, it's hard to argue with your list, of course in no order.

But then I start thinking about it, and I'm like, I can name a few albums on this list that in no way would come before 93 Til for my personal listening pleasure. Not many, though. And that is not to shit on any album you listed. Obviously all amazing and all classic. But I'd rather listen to Souls as a full album than:

License To Ill
As Nasty As They Wanna Be
Walking With A Panther
Dead Serious
Sex Packets
I Wish My Brother George Was Here

If I went your 50-100 I'd probably find a few more too.

Again, all of these albums are essential listening, but I honestly think I would take 93 over those if the limit was 50.

This is what I meant, though. You get to 50 even in an eye blink.

Your list is amazing of course and we all agree every album there is classic in one way or another, but still, for me it is not as easy to keep pushing 93 Til down the list. Agreed with everyone now that I see your list that cracking the top 50 might be hard. I wanted to listen to Live and Let Live last night and of course just let the whole album rock and it just made me think. Had to bring it to :phila: for the discussion.

Well yea, would I prefer to listen to 93 Til over many of those? Definitely. I can't recall the last time I played License To Ill or any Eminem album, but I feel in hip-hop universe those albums were better and more important. So favs is different than a definitive best. But it's a great question and I thank you for making me do this.

I LOVE that list, but Kanye, Kendrick Lmar and Madvillain have no business being on there with those other albums. Shout outs for putting "Firing Squad" and "6 Feet Deep" tho, i love those.

90% of the list was pre 95, so towards the end I wanted to add some recent albums. Still, I don't think 93 Til is better than Madvilliany.

totally agree....i do my list without heart or prejudice....i literally rate each song on an album on a 1-10 scale add up the total then divide by the number of songs to come up with a number...i dont consider things like influence....ahead of its time...what it meant to the culture....what it meant to me and what might have been going on in my own life when the album first dropped....etc...

that being said there are factors that come into play which causes me to adjust my list...things like length of album matters....with the way that i do it paid in full for example is way overrated due to it being so short...like is an 8 song album where all the songs are highly rated better than a 15 song album that has 12 highly rated songs but three not so much and those three songs cause the album to drop below a shorter but not as good album...because of this and some other factors i adjust my strictly by the numbers list into my all time favorite albums

no one can do it better is overrated as hell because of a car crash...its got a significant amount of filler

doggstyle is carried by its handful of admittedly great songs but the rest is meh

for a long time ive tried to convince myself of blueprints classic status but i cant do it and its def not on the same planet as 93 til which has zero weak songs and a lot of great ones with some of the best production ever

i mean this goes back to the favorite v. best thing again but i feel like you overvalue albums because of big names (jay/snoop/dre and d.o.c.) or reputation rather than the actual tracks that they contain...if im wrong on that then i suppose we just have completely different tastes

i'm not overvaluing them. i think despite how corny Snoop has been since 1995, Doggystyle is one of the best albums made. no way can i see anyone saying 93 Til is better. maybe you overvalue the little guys because they're not as successful or possibly more obscure? i don't know man, but those 3 you mentioned, find me one more person on this planet saying 93 Til is better than them. again, use your mind not your heart with this one because taste shouldn't matter.

That's dope that you listed your lowest rated ones! I have this bad habit of getting rid of albums that I hate. Like, I had multiple Canibus albums at one point. At age thirty two, that kind of thing would be embarrassing to defend. I probably bought albums somewhere in the 500 - 600 range though, and it's been over a decade since i was really actively buying

One thing I learned from this thread is Clark Bent is serious about this shit. Not playing games.. Icy Blu is likely going to hold a grudge, though. I guess he should be happy to get a mention out of this. lol no clue who that is.

I guess I agree that after analysis SoM is not top 50, but it HAS to be top 100. For me, it is better than Fear Itself and No Need For Alarm at the very least so there's that. I implore everyone to throw it on and listen front to back. So good.
