Give it a rest, dude. You’re taking shit far too personally like your old buddy Cleanhobo.
I didn’t like a movie you’re obviously going to love, because its overall rating is positive. My fave critic liked it. Oh well. Will undoubtedly chime in greater detail once other posters feel the need to discuss spoilers in this thread, but I’ve moved on; so should you.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (2017)
in general i liked it.
compared to other movies it gets a half thumb up for me
compared to every other star wars post og trilogy; its up there with rogue one as best
some of the writing? garbage. some of that dialogue is like straight up horrific. some of the choices are fucking terrible some are really clever and work well. the story? you know its actually pretty sweet. whos cool with who whos pitted against who whos intriguing why etc.
are there other bad decisions? god yes in multiples but were just going to have to deal with the fact that shits disneyfied. thats just the reality of where we are. and theyve laid some poor foundation from the past one(s) like rays stuff especially is so weak for what it is and what they could have done. but again. lets just accept it because: thats where we are right now.
some good decisions include

Felt closer to Space Balls than Star Wars. Easily the worst Star Wars movie. I’m gonna go see it again this week to make sure I wasn’t just shocked by the horrible and pretty much insane choices made. Holy shit.

Force Awakens got 93% and it was gash.alpha wrote:Second time.
Easy to see our opinions are quite opposite. But Ffs it’s 94% fresh on rotten tomatoes.
Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (2017)
Kinda sweet kinda weak. Very wise stuff though in terms of where the lore is going in the following movies. Also. I didn't like the look. The appearance was too polished to me. And I thought the scene could've played better. But in our Disney heavy context it works finePhilaflava wrote:

As much as I consider myself a hardcore Star Wars nerd, the backlash has been fucking hilarious.
Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (2017)
I wonder if I would have liked the original movies if I watched them for the first time as an adult without nastalgia blinders. I do think the new movies were badly written and the dialogue is terrible. Everything is quite predictable. The worst part of the movie is when Finn called phasma Chrome Dome. That bothered me more than it should have to be honest. And kylo ren is still a horrible villain throwing childish hissy-fits.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (2017)
The combo of fairly dark content juxtaposed with near-slapstick comedy felt very 80s fantasy. The fish nuns even looked like something from Labyrinth or Terry Gilliam, and the adorable street urchins fit right in with that. I didn't hate it but it's definitely a departure from the established tone of Star Wars and I understand why people are having such a knee jerk rejection of it.blastmaster wrote:Felt closer to Willow than Star Wars.
I actually liked a lot of what they were trying to do here and had a great time watching this off my head on edibles, but there are so many dumb things about the script, both in terms of the choices the characters make and the plotting/structure of the movie overall, that it's hard to focus on the good. Rogue One was a better effort at doing something different with the series imo.

It's been a couple of weeks, no real point using spoiler tags anymore.
Everyone who wanted to see this movie has already done so. Talk about shirtless Kylo, Carrie Poppins and frog nuns with no fear.

yes that was annoying. also when finn is being chased in space casablanca jail and exclaims: "Oh no, the cops!"360 wrote:The worst part of the movie is when Finn called phasma Chrome Dome.

this was a fun moviegoing experience, but a clean star wars plotline it is not. would love to see how they come back from this one. in the meantime, this is one of those movies that needs a second viewing to formulate a better opinion.

i liked finn a lot in the force awakens. humanizing a stormtrooper is a pretty bold idea. but there was totally nothing for him to do in this movie. all his scenes & plotline should be cut. man i was hoping for him to get it in with poe dameron, not that chubby azn.

man when you consider obi wan's career vs luke it's pretty embarrassing. think of all the crazy shit obi wan did, what'd luke do? lost to darth vader, lost to the emperor, then fucked up the jedi academy (& lost to kylo ren) & ran away & cried. what a fucking punk.
i heard they might bring back ewan tho..

He's a pretty poor choice of jedi. Not mentally tough. Not of great character. But at the same time one could argue that obi wons choice of passing the skills to Luke was pretty ad hoc. Like oh shit I'm an old hermit who is so powerful I can talk in space even though I'm dead and I haven't passed my skills on to anyone. It's pretty shotgun that he wants to pass skills on to this dude basically just because he likes dudes dad. Talk about baby boomer mentality right there. Also Yoda though. Same kind of deal. He hangs out in a swamp. Luke comes along. He did obi a favor but doesn't really pass on the wisdom just the skills. So much of what he says is like 'just do what I say' or 'this is how it is' like jesus can we get some socratic method or something.

Once the dust settles, it wouldn't surprise me if Lucasfilm give Rian Johnson the boot or at least restrict his creative input on his announced SW trilogy.

Awful movie. Predictable, corny, lazy. Kamikaze part was the only memorable part.
