The Best Southern Hip-Hop Songs of All-Time

Post by Philaflava »

We're doing a Southern Tribute on Take It Personal. I fully anticipate this running 2 episodes with all the music but we'll probably focus on the 90s and some 00's. Besides the classics from Geto Boys or OutKast, can you help me compile a proper list? Maybe fire off your 25 favorite cuts. Nothing too current please.

Make sure Memphis rap doesn't get overlooked because of the popularity of that particular sound amongst the Soundcloud/Tumblr teenage douchebags crowd.

Playa Fly - Crownin Me
Gangsta Pat - Deadly Verses
Tommy Wright III - Meet Yo Maker
Kingpin Skinny Pimp - One Life 2 Live
DJ Zirk - 2 Thick
DJ Squeeky - Still Getting High
Tom Skee Mask - Niggaz Watch Your Back
Mr Tinimaine - 19 Tini 5
Three Six Mafia/ UGK - Sippin
DJ Spanish Fly - Smokin Onion Remix
Project Pat - Chickenhead

thought I'd have loads to suggest but most of them are NYC/Southern collabs which probably isn't what you're after. A few off the top though

Juvenile ft Big Tymers & BG - Flossing Season
Ludacris - Block Lockdown
Bonecrusher - Neva Scared

I love Southern Hip Hop songs that are so classic that they transcend their region, to the point other regions of Hip Hop cite them in their lyrics:

"Knowing, all the shit now one knows. Way before radio played throw them bows"." ™Large Professor

"Nann nigga, you know Nann nigga just like Trick & Trina" ™Papoose

Fat Pat is fading into obscurity. “Ghetto Dreams” “Heart of a Hustler” and “Tops Drop” should be required listening. Not even factoring in “25 Lighters” and “Wanna Be A Baller”.

Just think about Fat Pat. He was pretty awesome. Thanks.

Big Moe too. “Barre Baby”.

Tim Smooth too. “Can’t Trust No Hoe” and “I Don’t Give A Damn About Ya Boyfriend” are absolute gems that don’t make conversations like this because people put Ludacris songs into the mix.

And I am of the “Playa Playa” > “Havin Thangs” Camp.

Also, “Bourbons and Lacs”, no?

And “Mo City Don” is a great pick, but is it a better song than “The Mule”?

I fux with The Mule, but it isn't even a top 3 song on that album to me, let alone Z-Ro's masterpiece.

My favorite from Tip, doesn't sound like typical Southern though but like an NYC banger instead. Thanks to Jake One for blessing him with this instrumental.

Maybe a quick shoot through iTunes and Spotify can help? I've found that to be the most convenient way to check out songs I haven't heard before nowadays and compile a playlist.

in addition the dead poet's contribution, if you go on YouTube and double click on the screens of the songs, it'll bring up the option to "download as". From there you can convert the .mp4 file to mp3 using a free program like MPEG Streamclip. Hope this helps.
