Re: 1993 or 1994?
1994 is the better year overall, but there's no albums from that year I love as much as Doggystyle and Buhloone Mind State.
Plus there's also Akinyele's Vagina Diner and Mac Mall's Illegal Business which both REALLY shoulda been in that 1993 pile.
1993 also has a few of my fave random 12"s (no Conehead22):
KMD - What A N*ggy Know
UGK - Pocket Full Of Stones (Pimp C remix)
Big L - Devil's Son
DJ Jimi & Juvenile - Bounce For The Juvenile
M.O.P - How About Some Hardcore

I own Vagina on tape. Mac I have but felt like it wouldn't resonate like some of the others.

Another 1993 fave album: the indie version of Dru Down's first CD with Weak Move, Bigger Than What You Think and Dru Rules on it.

Illegal Business bodies the albums by LOTUG, Pete Nice, LL, and Eric Sermon.Philaflava wrote:Mac I have but felt like it wouldn't resonate like some of the others.

I'll give you the LL and E-Dub, but the Lords was fun. It was simple, Das EFXish and had some great K-Def production too. Pete Nice is just a personal fav. I'm a sucker for all things Beatnuts related.

Re: 1993 or 1994?
LOTUG album had 1 good song to me, and I never wanna hear that song again in my life
1993 also has the first Beatnuts EP, Mac Dre's Young Black Brotha compilation, and 8Ball & MJG's Comin' Out Hard album.
So, yeah, 1994 is still the superior year, but 1993 is way better than that pile of CDs suggests

Funky Child
Chief Rocka
Pyscho
Here Come The Lords
Check It
All solid. Even the Flow On (Pete Rock remix) knocks. It's just music that doesn't age well. Agree on the Comin' Out Hard album but On Top Of The World is my fav of theirs. YBB dominated the 93-94 years.

It's on Spotify etc. It's called Fools From The Streets although it just says Dru Down on the coverClean Hobo wrote:I need a link for that Dru Down.Career Over Like Mike(NJJ) wrote:Another 1993 fave album: the indie version of Dru Down's first CD with Weak Move, Bigger Than What You Think and Dru Rules on it.
I assume sample clearance fucked up the 3 songs I mentioned not making it onto Explicit Game.
Weak Move was Jacka's fave Dru Down song apparently
Gloss fux with Weak Move too because he put it on one of the Bay mixes on the :phila:odcast
Re: 1993 or 1994?
Maybe the Nostalgia is dying in me but can you actually put on a Lords of the underground album in 2018 and enjoy it? Like, that whole era and style (Das EFX, shadez of lingo, etc included) is so unlistenable to me now. And I loved it back then.

No, it hasn't aged well. I'm well aware of that. Anything with that tongue twisting gibberish isn't flying these days. Hold It Down by Das is still enjoyable tho. The vibe of music these days is similar in the same simplicity as far as lyrics go, but it's much darker I feel.Blockhead wrote:Maybe the Nostalgia is dying in me but can you actually put on a Lords of the underground album in 2018 and enjoy it? Re: 1993 or 1994?
'93 and '94 are the two greatest back-to-back years. I turned 19 in '93 and 20 in '94. I voted '94, but could easily go with '93 on another day.
LOL at listing that Bay Area Rap crap like Dru Down. Mac Mall was OK, but I rarely listened to Rap shit as I was always listening to HipHop.
I can still easily listen to that LOTUG album... the production from K-Def and Marley Marl was top notch.

Re: 1993 or 1994?
Music had a longer shelf life back then and those albums that dropped at the tale end of '93 (Snoop, Wu, Tribe etc) were still in heavy rotation with singles/remixes and videos well into 1994 so that kind of gives 94 the edge I think.
Some of that "east coast stomp" stuff from the first part of 93 definitely hasn't aged aswell, whereas 94/95 kind of became the blueprint for all the boombap stuff that would follow for years to come, especially in terms of tempo. The 93 NY stuff tends to be a bit noisier.
No way could I listen to whole LOTUG or even Das EFX album now but listening back to mixtapes and radio show from the era they were getting serious spins, along with Fu-Schnickens. If I hear something of theirs in the middle of a playlist or a mix that's cool but anything more and I'm skipping.

Re: 1993 or 1994?
The digital age ruined a lot of that. Too accessible. Too many releases. Back in the 90s, you had a budget, you worked in a studio on an album and then the label eventually put it out. Usually, a lead-off single, followed by the actual release and a few more singles. An album was properly worked. If Tribe dropped an album, you knew it would be another 2-3 more years before we got another one so you really appreciated it.step one wrote:Music had a longer shelf life back then and those albums that dropped at the tale end of '93 (Snoop, Wu, Tribe etc) were still in heavy rotation with singles/remixes and videos well into 1994 so that kind of gives 94 the edge I think.
Now, anyone can drop anything at any given time. No pressing. No release date. No anticipation. Kanye and all his shit he did with Pusha, Nas and Kid Cudi is a prime example. With the exception of a few Pusha tracks and maybe 1 Nas, do you revisit those albums? They came out less than 2 months ago too. You probably stopped giving a shit about them after the first day or so.
Re: 1993 or 1994?
clarifying what age he was the year after he was 19 was my favourite partWiCkEd22 wrote:'93 and '94 are the two greatest back-to-back years. I turned 19 in '93 and 20 in '94.
I didn't want to derail the thread but general consensus says 88-89 has a strong claim for best back to back years. Wicked wouldn't know this because his introduction to hiphop was C&C Music Factory and Gerado. He was bumping Do The Bartman relentlessly in 1990.

Tough one...I guess 94 on the strength of Outkast, Scarface and Beatnuts...
Also, music doesn't "age", it is inherently good or bad from the start... You just realize years later that you were influenced by a fad...

Gucci with the outrageous hottake
I'm taking 94 by a slight margin because as far as albums go it really was kinda the best year in Hip Hop History. 93 was amazing in it's own way of course but I mean 94 is just too relentless.

I listen to Get In Where You Fit In more these days, but MC Eiht and CMW was toward the top of my list for a long time. Still love them but I don’t play their music a ton.GUCCI CONDOMS wrote:#HOTTAKEPhilaflava wrote:
