Re: DOCUMENTARY: "Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap"

Watched this with the wife a few days ago. Her only issue was that she wanted more female emcee's interviewed and she hates Ice-T. Other than that, it was good for a short documentary. Also, I swore Kool G Rap and Scarface would have been interviewed, too. I wanted to hear their views.

Re: DSD:Boogiemonsters/Gravediggaz

Remember buying both of these albums when they dropped, just before I moved to Baltimore for my first real job out of college. Love them both. But Boogiemonsters (along with Black Moon, Jeru, Gang Starr, Tribe, Organized Konfusion, and Nas) really got me through some very tough times that year. Boog...

Re: Which is the better Gang Starr Album?

Me and the wife have debated this since before we got married. I choose Daily Operation and she always says it's Step in the Arena. Simply a matter of taste.

Coast II Coast. Listened to it earlier this week and I'm still amazed at how well this album has held up over time.

I agree. Definitely splitting hairs here. While I rushed out to buy Black Sheep when it dropped, I picked up a used version of Del's CD two months after it was released. After 20 + years, I've played Del's CD many, many times more. Like Verge mentioned, it's that personal nostalgia thing. Side note ...

Stakes is High. I remember buying It Was Written and Stakes as High that same day and bumping them on the way to work. I was disappointed with Nas because of the expectation that I would hear Illmatic part 2. In hindsight, it doesn't really matter. De La suprised me as well without Prince Paul, but ...

Was still stuck on the Tribe vibe back then so I ignored a lot of releases that month. Bought Aquemini more than a year later and kicked myself for not buying it when it dropped.

Agreed. I used Spin it Again with my tape deck and laptop to convert a load of old tapes. It's free to use:

The Roots. Remember it like yesterday. Tower Records on South Street only had copies of the cover art displayed here but I wanted the cover with the guy holding the Ace of Spades. Picked up Prince Paul's album, too, for $9.99.

Re: Is there a point in storing downloaded music?

I don't want to be reliant on internet access availability or some third-party host that will inevitably involve accounts, contracts, violation of use conditions, passwords, and all that crap. fire up the laptop, there's my music. boom Couldn't have said it better. No one should have to depend on n...

Tribe wins this easily for me based on lasting memories, enjoyment, and anticipation back then. I picked it up that day and saw 36 Chambers on the shelf but didn't even think to buy it until 2 months after it dropped. There were so many good albums to listen to back then that an album as great as 36...

That's a valid question and The Source actually had an article about the slowly fading Philly raps scene in the May 1991 issue. The one thing about Philly hip-hop that used to bother me was that no one ever seemed to stick together to build a strong base for the future. Artists who were successful s...
