The first two are classics, don't get me wrong, but for different reasons they haven't aged as well to me. The debut was obviously a monumental album that changed hip hop forever but there's an inherent late '80s corniness that is difficult to ignore. The sophomore LP was similarly brilliant, and hilarious at times, but aside from "Pass The Peas" there's just so little ... soul I guess.

Stakes Is High is cool but it spawned way too many horrific trends to be remembered fondly. I know they didn't mean it at the time, but they birthed the very worst form of backpackerism with that album.

Buhloone wins. Maybe I'm just getting old.
 Totally agree. One of my favorite albums of all time. Definitely, imo, the best De La record.
yup.

01. Buhloone Mindstate
02. De La Soul Is Dead
03. 3 Feet High & Rising
04. Stakes Is High

never really got into the three newest albums too much.. not that they're wack or anything

Add Verbal Clap to that short list and I'm inclined to agree with you. Most definitely their worst album, largely due to the fact that it just feels like a bunch of tracks thrown together rather than a cohesive piece of work like all of their other albums.

I liked the TGD when I was in college and was practically a backpacker.
Stakes Is High was my first backpacker album back in like 8th grade.

Thun was on to something when he said that SIH birthed backpacker albums.
TGD is a return to this form.

if you liked SIH you probably jock TGD.

 I don't see the similarities between those two albums at all. SIH was pretty much an onslaught on mainstream hip-hop of those days, while TGD sounds like De La trying to be a lot more accessible (again, minus the Jake One and 9th tracks). "Shopping Bags", TGD's lead single, was the antithesis to the SIH album.

OHHH with Redman was trying to be accessible.

The Grind Date is De La Soul working with Jay D again, who produced the song "Stakes Is High" and pretty much embodies their sound from that era as well as working with producers like 9th wonder and Jake One who also can be considered throwbacks to that era.
doesn't seem that far off of a connection to me.

Dilla's production style had completely changed from the days of SIH to TGD. I don't think he did more than two tracks on TGD anyway. You just have to listen to the lyrics to know the two albums couldn't be any more different.

Nah man, steer clear. There's no reason to give it a chance, there's nothing remotelye xciting about the concept or tracklist. Just another yawnfest hardly worthy of your after-dinner bullshit time.

BMS is my favorite De La album. It looks like it's most of yours to..funny shit is I've read Pos think it's their wackest..

I wish I could find the quote but Pos basically said "it was gay and we were listening to too much Brand New heavy's"

The hate for TGD is crazily surprising to me especially considering the quality of the AOI joints...that 2nd one was their worst record to me even w/bangers like "Watch Out" on it...it just doesnt compare well to the rest of their catalogue...TGD minus about 2-3 songs rates well.

Sidenote: "Breakadawn" sampled both Smokey & MJ...totally agree it was a fresh using of both them joints. Prince Paul is the shit.

The interviews are the dopest shit about the mix to me. Hella insightful.

Some of the 09 Tributes are pretty fresh too.
