Cash Money Records - The Independent Years (1991-1998)
Spotted this over at the Amoeblog. Great article chronicling the bounce years and early, pre bling-era Cash Money.

Cash Money has put out a lot of bullshit over the past eighteen (!!! ), but there are always gems scattered amongst the trash, and a lot of them come from this era. Seems like very few people north of the Mason-Dixon know that Cash Money was putting out records long before "Bling Bling" and "Back Dat Azz Up."
On a related note, a lot of the Cash Money releases that dropped after the era covered in the article are worth listening to once just to hear the Big Tymers' speeches scattered throughout. They're as good if not better than the J. Prince speeches.

I don't know about unlistenable...although that shit is pretty rough when you stack it up beside the glossy post-1998 CM releases.rooski wrote:Chopper City and "Drag 'Em in the River" were good at the time (not sure how they aged), but other than those and the speeches pre-Bling Cash Money is nearly unlistenable.
Bounce is definitely an acquired taste, though. Really only works for me in small doses, like Miami Bass shit from the early 90's. Great to bang at a party but not exactly the kind of stuff you'd want to vibe to on the train after work.
That's not a fair assessment. Nor is it at all accurate to write off their entire catalog as bounce.rooski wrote:Chopper City and "Drag 'Em in the River" were good at the time (not sure how they aged), but other than those and the speeches pre-Bling Cash Money is nearly unlistenable.

Not what I was going for at all but a valid point. I guess I just assume that when people put early Cash Money on blast it's because they fail to appreciate the subtleties and artistic craft of NO bounce music, so I feel compelled to defend that aspect of the label.multsanta wrote:Nor is it at all accurate to write off their entire catalog as bounce..
By the way, is that a Pimp C beat on "Release Me?"
