i actually wasn't crazy about this song myself when it first came out, it grew on me though

BUT, it is all immaculately crafted. the amount of effort and attention to detail these guys put into verses about getting drunk and getting your dick sucked is impressive in of itself
It isn't though. This kind of approach worked in say 1995 if your name was Funkdoobiest but nowadays it just comes off as pointless. To me, anyway. I;m not mad at anyone for liking it.

but it's not 95 anymore. consider the fact that at this point most songs with the similar lean consist of two or three continuously repeated catchphrases augmented with some grunts and shout outs

Noted, but isn't this a terribly depressing rubric (I'm sure you have other reasons for digging this, but I'm looking for anything to grasp on t at this point)?

it is depressing, and it is almost as depressing to argue for a song simply on the merits of the creators putting palpable effort into it (something which would seem to be an a priori requirement for the song to even exist in the first place). but that doesn't change the fact that if i had a whip this song would bang in it.

This shit is weak as fuck. Thirteen-year-olds from San Jose with beginner Pro Tools set-ups are making better music and selling the shit on mixtapes.

First ny g-side show eva:
http://www.mayslesinstitute.org/cinema/calendar.html

From Huntsville to Harlem: G-Side Live!
Alabama hip-hop screening, discussion, & performance
The earlier film and discussion will be followed by a performance of G-Side, a hip-hop group hailing from Huntsville, Alabama, whose excellent Huntsville International street album has helped put Huntsvilleג€™s rap scene on the radar. The do-it-yourself work ethic of G-Side and Codie G, manager of local independent label Slow Motion Soundz, show how the spirit of self-determination continues to live on in the South. There will also be a screening of footage and interviews documenting the history of hip-hop in Alabama, alongside a discussion.

yes and no

some really good songs, he's def got promise as a producer and his rapping is steadily improving.

but the presentation is somewhat lacking imo... some of the songs are not mastered all that well, it's not as polished as the SMS product usually is and the dj annoys the shit out of me

there are obv common mixtape issues, so maybe i'm just spoiled by the standards they've set for themselves with past releases. their 'mixtapes' are usually album quality

I thought that Clova mixtape was fire. His production is pretty great and he sounds at home over it. The dj does a good job too.

i know i'm likely in the minority on that one, the response to it has been generally very positive

i don't hate it by any means, i wouldn't have put it on the blog if i did. wifi is my shit, and there's a bunch of other good songs there as well. but i do think it could've been better. maybe it has to do with inflated expectations in the wake of In the Box and Happy Hour

I'd say that Happy Hour and the Clova tape are about the same level. I think I might actually prefer the Clova tape right now - the Clova tape has that old HSV sound that I fell in love with in the first place.

In The Box was a disappointment though. Those guys are better than that - there were plenty of nice moments throughout, but it felt unfinished and not particularly memorable.

Since I have no idea what you're talking about or of how that comparison is set up in the first place, why don't you enlighten me? How are "these guys (...) worse than Anticon"? What is it about them that you don't like? How much of their music are you familiar with? Is all of it equally bad? If this is so bad, what do you reckon is "good"? etc. etc.

Your take on this article? I think it's kind of shitty, in a "who the fuck would benefit from reading this?" kind of way.

It's snarky and passive aggressive. Seems like Caramaica asked for the assignment but realized he jumped the gun by covering a scene that's not exactly ready to be covered by the "newspaper of record." I'm one of Huntsville's biggest proponents, but the scene needs actual, um, fans before getting this kind of media coverage.

And I think that Caramanica article is straight, really - he's a fan but wary about jumping the shark before they are actually on the verge of blowing up, the way I read it.

he did a good job summarizing the itinerary points of the evening. but he tries to touch on some larger themes without having neither the space nor (seemingly) the desire to really dig deeper into them in this write up. so as a whole it feels kinda awkward, and i can see how RC would read it as passive aggressive.

the fact that he banged this out in a very short amount of time might have something to do with it. the show was on saturday night, the article went up on the nyt website early sunday afternoon.

it is a good beat but i'm not a fan of the song overall, they should've gave it to somebody who's not a flamboyant TI impersonator. pretty sure the song is like 2 years old too, i think the dude wanted a vid for it now because his mixtape just came out
