Bill's verse on there is a gut wrencher:
I've always been a crook, never given up
But the past few years has been really rough
Felt like givin' up a couple of times
Take a jump or plant a slug deep, up in my mind
Fuck it I'm dyin', done wit strugglin' for mine
Sleepin' on fans floors, there ain't no use to me lyin'

All 3 verses on there do it, but that Scarface verse is some :owens: shit for me.

In the late 90s there were all of those Eddie Ill and DL mixtapes coming out with lots of gay/awesome songs about shit like being a failure or an underground rapper or being from Canada or whatever. Some of those were pretty poignant, but I lost those tapes when I turned into a gangster around 2002. There was an Unspoken Herd ( ) song on one of them that was about trying to stop smoking weed and that got me a little teary eyed when I was like 17.

Cool story bro.

SMH at someone quoting Crooked I in a thread about the most poignant rap songs of all time.

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned De La yet, considering how respected they are on here. Pos' verse on "Stakes is High" where he drops the "No wonder where we live is called the projects" line is a no brainer, but "Trouble in the Water" and "Trying People" are more poignant songs overall. At least one of the two should have made the Top 100 Native Tongues list, imo.

Agreed about "All That I Got Is You." That would probably top my list. Also agree about Scarface being the GOAT of this thread. Although Thun put "My Block" in the Feel Good songs thread, I'd argue that it's more appropriate for a thread like this. I'd also add "Seen a Man Die" and "Suicide Note."

Aceyalone's "I Never Knew" never gets the props it deserves and is does a great job with dealing with the loss of innocence and is the best song that traffics in the "using the same word in every line" gimmick.

Agreed, the last verse of "My Block" gives the song a huge dose of ambivalence and depth.

I'm so proud that Ithe did not cite a white rapper in this thread.

Thread needs some Z-Ro.

Rap is the best genre of music ever because it's the only one which can make Christianity not sound like the preserve of dumb faggots :

2nd realest rap song ever after 24 Hours To Live, imo :

Great call by Ice on Trouble in the Water.

Also, I wouldn't dare to try to intellectualize it or compare it to other lines, but the start of Pos' verse on Pony Ride always struck me as exceptionally solemn and austere (in a good way):

I recall kissing on my lady talking bout makin babies
Now we made the baby but cannot connect as legal spouses
Now me and my daughter reside in different houses

The De La lyrics that will ALWAYS get me misty eyed on behalf of my people:

"A swing ain't that important when the park's around the corner,
filled with life, causing death, breeding victims for the mourner."

this is why i LOVE pos. he intertwines pearls of succinct but thought-provoking pieces in lots of verses, subtle but really thoughtful stuff

"Trouble In The Water" did make the list so I'm not sure what you're complaining about.

Watch it, Ice. I'll give you points for bringing back Believe It in that Saigon thread, but let me explain something to you fam.... Yo... FAM... I do this man, you do your edit thing, I ain't trying to come down on your posts, don't try to come down on mine! I'm in the studio too long man, don't talk to me about none of that stuff, you're not in my shoes, you don't have to be The Frankest crying to Crooked I freestyles (that you ain't even heard)... I mean yooo, what about the MUSIC? All these quotes and all these antics, they don't matter at the end of the day because the particular freestyle I mentioned is boignant to ME even if it's not a sad song. Trust me on it and just let it go! Peace

If you can bare the hook, which I can, Mega brings it right here.

My bad, bros. I guess I missed it while going through the list.

Another poignant song, which was made even better by the remix that Verge (?) posted in TROY a while back.

Fuck that, you know how hard I had to fight to keep that song on the list because the editors wanted to include ten Monie Love album cuts?
