Rap podcasts

Post by peanut butter »

I'll check out Stay Hatin (SergDun, Matthew Africa & Soft Money), Champale (Willy Staley & Marko) and Disrespectful Radio (David Drake, Ernest Wilkens & Andrew Barber) on a semi-regular basis.

Any other out there worth listening to that feature the music/analysis/interview format?

not exactly a podcast, but close enough - a couple of my friends who run the purple tape pedigree blog have an internet radio show that streams live (usually) on thursdays from 730-930 and is then available for stream/dl afterward. they got a good ear for all sorts of new rap and have had good guests - exquire, gunplay, main attrakionz, gside, tree and ka all have been on there in the past. I'm on there too occasionally.

it's called fresh out the box

http://www.bboxradio.com/fresh-out-the-box/

another similar internet thing i fuck wiht is called Baller's Eve, they specialize in southern rap, usually the aggressive stuff. it streams on EVR

Most of the ones mentioned are great. Is Champale still going?

J-Zone recently reupped his old Gators N Furs shows
http://www.govillaingo.com/gators.html
he has a few more recent ones on the ego trip site also, the safe sex ones the business
http://www.egotripland.com/author/j-zone/
Id also recommend tracking down his old Ignant mixes.

Two Irish music writers had a great one up til a few months back. It ended up pretty much just rap music by the end,
http://themsthevagaries.tumblr.com/post ... -the-mummy
they had Dom Passantino, 2shin & Soderberg on as guests. Dallas Penn too sorta.

The godz Drew Huge & Dan Large's rap podcast is better than any other rap podcast

Good lookin out. Yeah I didn't mean to exclude rap radio shows. I'm interested in anything in this format.

Larry, I think the last Champale podcast was in May. I'm holding out hope this is just a long break, not an indication that it is over. I just recently discovered it so I'm going through back episodes and really enjoying it. The discourse they approach beyond just discussing rap can be pretty interesting, in between joking and drinking. Hopefully its not done.

And you mentioned J-Zone, the episode of Stay Hatin that he guests on is one of the greatest ever. If you didn't listen, here it is: http://stayhatin.com/post/27842115867/t ... -joined-by

Yeah J's Stay Hatin appearance was so great. I really hope its just a Champale hiatus cos yeah they really ha something unique going there

I cant believe I forgot the Combat Jack show. Its grown into probably the best of the bunch lately, they ironed out all the kinks and stepped up their game 100%. Its really funny, their DJs excellent, they have the best guests by a country mile etc, weird cos it was often a bit of a mess up til recently and i ended up skipping most episodes
http://thecombatjackshow.com/
I really recommend the Havoc episode but Im only catching up myself so there might be better recent ones

Ah fuck that's awful.
SF Weekly wrote:We're just getting word via Facebook and other sources that beloved local hip-hop DJ Matthew Africa passed away this Monday in a car accident. He was 40.

His sister, Julia Africa, posted the following on Facebook:

My brother, Matthew Africa, was killed in a car accident on Monday afternoon. He and his beloved wife, Ha Le, were returning from a trip to Yosemite when their car collided with a big rig on a highway near Modesto. They tell us he died instantly; miraculously, she survived with multiple fractures. His absence is unbearable. Please keep our families in your thoughts and prayers.

Here's one account of the accident from the Patterson Irrigator:

Africa was heading northbound in his 2001 Volkswagen Beetle on Highway 33 just north of West Stanislaus Road at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday when he veered off the road for unknown reasons, according to a CHP report. His Beetle hit shoulder gravel, steered back onto the highway and spun in a clockwise direction and into the southbound lane before striking a 2000 Peterbilt driven by Hector Alvarez, 23, of Newman, according to the CHP. Africa was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries while his passenger, Ha Le Cow, 38, of Berkeley was taken by air ambulance to Doctors Medical Center for treatment of what was described as major injuries.

Africa was well-known among the community of Bay Area hip-hop DJs, having first made a name for himself with a show on UC Berkeley's KALX radio station. We've posted his work several times on All Shook Down, including a mix he made last year of the best of Bay Area rapper E-40.

Various tributes are pouring in across Twitter and Facebook. "My heart is hurting so much right now," Tweeted Oakland Faders DJ Platurn. "This is so fucked."

"Peace go with you Matthew," Tweeted local DJ King Most. "Strength to all your loved ones. Damn."

We're still gathering details on what happened and will update this post when we have more information. A memorial service has yet to be announced.
Rest in peace.

David Drake (So Many Shrimp) is leaving Disrespectful Radio to go work for Complex. The rap podcast game is in shambles after losing two titans of the industry in as many weeks.

My favorite one of the moment is Soupkitchen Exclusives hosted and DJ'd by Apollo Treed aka Top Cat. He was DJ Premier's first MC before the formation of Gangstarr.

I like the show because not only does he play some of the best of current underground/indie but he's a funny dude who not afraid to speak his mind about the mainstream. Episode #226 is the funniest review of Watch The Throne I've heard yet.

So "Shots Fired" (the Passion of the Weiss/NoCanDo project) is pretty entertaining.

http://www.earwolf.com/show/shots-fired/

On the most recent episode they talk about autotune sad robots like Kid Cudi/Cash Out and then interview Dam-Funk. Worth checking out, if your into this kinda thing.

Btw, why does ANYONE give a shit about that Gunplay fgt? That clown is a JOKE and I have no clue as to why ANYONE would give that retard their attention? I pay almost ZERO attention to them kinda nobodies.

***EDIT***

lol at this Hairy Hater clown callin me a new jack when I been into this Hiphop shit since '84. Get real.

And that whole Maybach Music shit is one of the BIGGEST jokes in the Rap world. None of them are Hiphop except Wale and it's sad that Wale is with them fake fgts. Are people fans of Gunplay because of all his tattoos? hahahaha Look at that FAT FUCK Rick Ross, he's the biggest JOKE and the FAKEST of them all. haha Anyone who is down with that CLOWN RAP is a fgt of the HIGHEST degree. Real talk.

This interview with the Combat Jack crew and Ebro Dardon, the PD @ Hot 97, is awesome. Gives really interesting perspective and insight on how corporate radio works and also why it is difficult for hip hop to work in that model.
