He can definitely spit. He's not in Kendrick or Schoolboy's class and even a slight cut below Ab Soul lyrically/conceptually, but the beats are really good and his voice is less grating than some of the other TDE clientele. I don't know why, and I'd probably have to spend more time with it to figure out if it's legit or just momentary, but the album actually has a little bit of a Slum Village Fantastic Vol 2 vibe for me.

Been on repeat since I made that comment. Fucking love this shit. I do feel Soliloquy is placed in a weird spot though as far as consistency and flow of the album. Other than, it just runs so smoothly.

its his first release with TDE. To be fair kendrick, schoolboy, and absoul were all pretty mediocre on their early TDE releases.

yea i have feeling he'll get out from under their shadow going forward. especially if he plays up his southern roots.

he's not a bad rapper by any stretch, but i feel like the production and arrangement really go a long way here. they really nail the pan-regional sound thing, bit of texas and nola in there with the cali stuff, some of the jazzier parts reminded me of muted east coast indie productions (there's a siah&yeshua moment somethere in there that really stuck out), and when it gets really low slung it almost sounds like a massive attack/tricky album. all adds up to a really nice mellow atmosphere throughout, and it's really polished in execution too... all that makes up for his relatively small shortcomings as an mc a whole lot

yeah I didn't mean he wasn't a good rapper and obviously the other TDE members have refined their craft over the last several years. I just more so meant that the album is remarkably good to me, and a lot of it has to do with the production, but there really aren't any glaring weaknesses.

i have the 12 and the 15. the most obv benefit of the 15 is that one of the bonus tracks has Suga Free

Seems a little hit or miss first time through, but he clearly made the album HE wanted to make. All four songs that were previously released were great and probably got my expectations a little too high. Hard to say anything definitive at this point though, I get the feeling this is the type of album I'll have to be in a certain type of mood to pull out, which might ultimately give it more long term appeal.

btw, listening to cilvia right now. love this album. one of the dopest things about this project is the fact that kendrick's not on it. isaiah can hold his own, and the lack of a kendrick feature shows confidence in that fact, both from isaiah and his label, TDE.

my only complaint of the album is that it didn't include the tracks, part II, part III, and khaki. i added these three on to my version of cilvia.

I prefer the last one because it was so versatile and that's his greatest strength IMO. I could listen to Habits & Contradictions in any situation, I don't think that'll be the case w/ Oxymoron. He's still a guy who just doesn't make bad songs though, I get the feeling his best work is still ahead of him.
