It was like writing about some guy at the bar approaching a woman. At first hes cocky and confident, then he gets desperate and tries to turn up the charm, realizing hes getting nowhere he arrogantly pretends he doesn't really care anyway. With your explanation, I think it makes more sense. It seems like you could come stronger and more "fly" with the cockiness but that may just be a personal preference. This subject matter is tough because it's always going to seem "cheesy" to a bunch of dudes who are reading it.
