thought it would pan out like that. most of those sites just recycle each others material and post whatever half baked shit the labels send them.

hahahahahahahaha what?

this is a terrible list, they basically just filled it out with a bunch of rapper's sites which are nothing more than an intern updating a general blog with week old info.

You guys do understand that the majority of hip-hop/rap fans are between the ages 11-21, right? You gotta be completely brain-dead if you're surprised by XXL's picks for rap's "top 100" blogs.

it was kinda foolhardy to hope that a forum was going to make the list, but TROY should have been on there. Still not that surprising though. How many TROY visitors/posters read XXL? How many XXL readers give a fuck that someone found Delicious Vinyl throw-away, non-album tracks from some group which broke up 15 years ago after their album got shelved because they weren't building any buzz?

I'm in the latter camp, meaning, I couldn't even describe a cover photo on XXL from the last 8 years.

it's an impossible email to write without coming off like ACThePedo.

Not even trying to diss. Prolly just not even worth your time.

I didn't even mention my sites, I just said who came up with this list? I'd really like to know. I kept it real short with no mention of PF, TROY or SB.

^^^ Fair enough.

My guess is they had an intern write out a list of as many hiphop blogs they could find, and then had a few people in the office email their friends and ask which hiphop blogs they read. That's the way the History Channel picked shit for its 20th Century series (I interviewed someone who supervised the project about 5 years back), and the way that the publishing house I interned at selected bloggers to send review copies of its books to. Save for presenting things in list form, there's nothing definitive or informed about the process of making stuff like this. It's basically a ploy (and one that works well) to get a lot of hits on digg.

Maybe but there are some "throwback" blogs on there like Unkut or WYDU so its hard to believe that TROY isn't on their radar. If we were ranked 20 out of 50 on Vibe, how is it we couldn't even get a spot on a list of 100?

Again, I'm just speculating because that list is embarrassing.

They also put themselves on the list, which is fucking stupid.

in any case, just a list of 100 websites in alphabetical order with no ranking and no editorial content is a huge shitbag of fail. At best the websites whose URLs happen to begin with a number might see slight rise in unique (and very short) page views, but after that shit is just going to be ignored or used to talk about how retarded XXL is.

Whoever had this shit idea should be fired or reassigned because:

1) the list is wayyyyyy tooooo long. There aren't 100 websites worth checking out on the web for any topic at all. Seriously. Only thing that makes this is a good idea is that you know that 100 websites will be linking to the list (which might be the whole point -- it would be interesting to see if this list correlates directly to webtraffic and the whole thing is just a marketing play, which would actually be pretty smart).

2) none of this is grouped into genres, and there's no editorial content or voice or reasons to check any of these other places over others. You're not providing your readers with a damn thing, because if they're even reading XXL they already have blogs they check, and this list provides no reason as to why they should check a different one.

plus a lot more. whatever. :megaman:

Wouldn't take it personally....it is XXL after all.

"Rap is something you do, Hip hop is something you live"

Rap = XXL
Hip Hop = PF / TROY
