i never understood it, his performance on vein dwarf's vast's. i think that vast made a bigger impact on first listen but that effect lessened with each new listen while vordul went the other way, you could miss it at first because vast's punchlines and shit but the more you listen the more you realize vordul did something really special.

Agreed.
I like them both, but I have grown to prefer Vordul on that album, because like Alaska said, some of the shit he said and the way he phrased it pops out at you in time, whereas Vast just kinda busts his nut (pause?) with his lines and rolls over to go to sleep.
They both killed that album tho.

I always thought Vordul's solo work was underrated. Yung Havoks and Megagraphitti both get play from me, still.

both those solos are tuff. never again is one of vorduls top 5 tracks to me and mega graffiti has the title track, ak47, opiom scripts, in the mirror, learn, stay conscious wit the old fast style he had. imani is bugged too

yo alaska, can you confirm that large parts of vorduls verse's on "cold vein" were initially half written and half off the dome?
i remember hearing this and being :ohsh:.
also, i agree with pretty much every sentiment in this thread. Dude was crazy talented. if only he had a little more focus , he coulda been on of the illest.

i know there was a lot of verses that went that route. I dont remember which ones and how much of what was what but after recording for years with vordul I know that was his steez. he used to have a lot of the verse done and then freestyle the rest.

Agreed. There are plenty of tracks on The Cold Vein where Vordul spits better than Vast, but both were great. I think Vordul has much better solo albums than Vast as well. I don't think Vordul was any better or any worse than Vast on The Cold Vein, but he didn't get much credit..

I think Vordul's solo stuff is better because he never got as bad as Vast's worst moments.

As for Cold Vein, I think (particularly with the mixing of the vocals) the whole hiding his greatness was intentional. With Vast you have such a distinct, powerful voice that just cuts through the production perfectly, but Vordul's softer presence and great performance really gave the album its replay value.

yah, vordul was the truth. I'm wondering if Kev Beecham has tape of the night Can Ox came through WNUR (I think Breeze Evahflowin' was making yet another appearance). I distinctly remember Vordul MURDERING his frees. He seriously blacked out. I will donate money to a Hatian charity for said audio.

Was listening to Cold Vein yesterday and thought the same thing. Also was thinking about which albums from the nerd rap era have held up over time. Cold Vein definitely has.

i think the two complemented each other very well. Never really got into any of the solo albums, but most likely due to a lack of effort. Vordul has talent for sure. Vast minus Vordul (or El-P beats) is god awful though....

I've always wondered about that 'Revolution of Yung Havoks' album. I remember I was at Tower Records several years ago when it was closing down and had seven bucks in my pocket and was gonna get that but went with Supastition- Chain Letters instead. I'll have to cop that soon. I thought 'Megagraphitti' was cool, but could've been much better. That first track "Stay Conscious" is damn dope.

I think what battlecatmeow said about the difference in Vast's and Vordul's voices is very true. Vast has a distinct voice and loud delivery, whereas Vordul is more refined and mellow. He almost sounds more contemplative. The lyrics on 'The Cold Vein' are really on another level, as are the beats of course. Classic and one of the best albums of the decade.

When I first heard Cold Vein, Vast's voice stood out way more, but once they started putting out solo albums, Vordul's have way more replay value. The Revolution Of Yung Havoks has bangers front to back.
