J Stalin

Post by donald goines »

I'm kinda late to all Bay Area music. I went out and bought Jacka's Tear Gas and wasn't too impressed at first but the album grew on me. J Stalin's appearance on the album made me go out and check his music and I was pleasantly surprised. What I really like about his music are the beats which almost sound like eighties R&B. I looked through the Bay thread but all the recommendations were kinda overwhelming. Does anyone have any recommendations for Bay music that has that eighties R&B feel similar to the songs below?

I've only heard Prenuptial Agreement but I love it, especially "Red and Blue Lights". Is his other stuff worth checking out?

The only 80's style beats Ive heard that youre talking about are being done by Stalin and the Livewire camp.

Check http://livewireforhire.blogspot.com/. Plenty of shit to check on there, Ive been sleeping on Stalin and Livewire but the stuff Ive heard that was recommended has all been pretty dope.

Def check these 2 if you like the 80's style beats, 2nd one especially.

Stalin is pretty solid, havent heard anything I didnt like. Beeda Weeda is also very dope, Shady Nate, Philthy Rich and J Jonah are all worth checking for as well, you can find their shit on that blog.

yes, Real World: West Oakland is a town classic and Gas Nation is on par with Prenuptial Agreement

there are a couple really good Livewire (Stalin's group/collective) albums too, definitely check out Pay Ya Self or Spray Ya Self

OP, DJ Fresh produced the first song you posted, could have done the other two as well. he loves to play around with that eighties R&B/pop sound. he's been working with EVERYBODY in the bay these last couple years so his work shouldn't be hard to find.

ironically enough im not a fan of the sound but here's some other dope shit with a similar feel

He is one of the most complete artists in rap right now. Fuck a lyrically lyrical ranking, but I would put him in my top 5 current rappers if you consider the total package.

Gas Nation, The Real World, Early Morning Shift, On Behalf of The Streets, Warning Shots 1 & 2 and Giants & Elephants are all essential if you like Prenuptial Agreement. Then get into the Livewire compilations and the later Early Morning Shifts. Lately On Behalf Of The Streets has been in constant rotation.

u want that 80s sound the new lee majors/jacka 'gobots 2' lp is all over classic 80s R&B tracks like 'happy' (aka kool g rap's 'fast life') 'hanging on a string' 'she's strange' etc. A lot of beats that have been used before (shes strange is mostly known for pac's "young niggaz") but its cool to have the 80s vibe all in one place

otherwise, if yr just looking for the vibe but w/out the obvious samples, its all DJ Fresh all the time
