This is the only place I have yet to come across anyone thinking the cover is racist... Or that the monkeys are even meant to represent black people. The cover is an interpretation of the intro track in which The Dirty Sample, who is often represented on his album covers and other artwork as a silverback gorilla, takes on this persona in this dream where he he is able to party with the rest of the monkeys in his pack... The monkeys are meant to be monkeys. No need to get so Freudian. It's just Planet of the Apes. The intro, played out as a dream, repeats the sample "Joshua partied with the monkeys" and contains monkey sound effects, all of which inspired the direction of the cover. It's a hip hop album so it's a hip hop party. If it was a punk album, I'm sure it would be a punk party with more leather and mohawks... The monkey theme also seemed to tie into one other of the tracks on the album, "Anti-Cymbal Monkey Movement." And I guess, in an evolutionary sense, "Atrophy" also touches on the topic of monkeys.
The back cover is an interpretation of the outro song, representing the after effects of the party...
And Noah, if you felt that way about the artwork you had many months in which to express those thoughts. I sent you the artwork in at least one email that you responded to. You could have said something like "that's pretty bad" if you really felt that way.
Thanks, Req...

just showed this to my (white) girl
me: baby, what is the first thing that comes into your mind when you see this?
her:
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
that its really fucking racist?
listen doogie, i am not saying you or this kid had any racist intentions, but i find it almost more insulting that you can't begin to understand why some people might find a cover of a hip hop album that depicts black people as monkeys (no white boys have afro picks) a bit offensive. even if it is representative of the theme of the album.
you have real live black people in this thread telling you they find it offensive. and you are arguing with them (us) about it.
the global is warming, indeed.

Its kind of a shame because that song I did with Moka is really dope (as is the whole thing probably), and now it will be overshadowed by this debacle

i have to admit, when Thomas handed me this CD, i never thought for one moment it was racist. and i hate hip hop coonism more than the average savage, plus i'm probably quicker to see racism where there may or may not be, because i overthink everything and believe in subconscious symbols and imagery. seeing it here, i totally can see why it's coming across fucked up. but when i got the disc, it was all good. the back of it does go with the front, and i wasn't offended by it, and i'm a black guy :no monkey:
as it looks there... yikes.
but i know that wasn't anyone's intention.
but... seeing this pic now is weird, and now every time i see this, i will think of this crazy conversation. good work, y'all! once again you prove:
rap is outta control
