Maino

Post by Icesickle »

If Wacka Flocka can get a four page thread in here, I'm resurrecting this one because the previous one got put to bed by the velcro shoes set.

Maino = MC with a great voice, great mic presence, and average but occasionally great lyrics who's made a handful of good songs and provided even better video interviews over the past few years. Makes better "hard music" (yes yes) than that muppet too. "Brooklyn Shit" is still getting spin in the the '01 Altima, dudes.

Great a thread about Maino but a comment about how Marcberg has filler.

:naswtf:

Is Marcberg > Illmatic around here?

The filler comment has more to do with some of the beats than Roc's rap rap rapping anyway. Be easy.

Which tracks by Maino are not filler, though? Serious question. Everything I've heard from him his uninspired trash. When does he deviate from that formula?

Bearing in mind that I'm talking to someone who just spent 3 pages defending Waka Flocka's "hard" music, "Brooklyn Way 2" is great and has been in rotation for a while. The guy has a great, soulful (yes yes), world-weary voice and an authoritative mic presence, both qualities that he shows off in that song. His verses aren't extended quotables or anything, but he comes out with some nice couplets here and there (eg, "This for my road dogs still behind prison walls, I send them pictures of me; standing on a Rolls Royce") that have a kind of simple, unforced poetry to them. Unlike your boy, Mr. Flame, his rhymes don't belie who he actually is either.

Have you been thinking all this time that your passive agressive use of quotes is funny, cutting, or insightful? You are misled if that is the case.

The little exchange I had with Mike Eagle in that thread had little to do with the merits of Waka's music (I've only ever heard one song in its entirety) and more to do with claims of intentionality and fallacious criticism and the like. Maybe you already know that (it's hard to tell because your reading comprehension seems to wax and wane at random) but I'm just clarifying for the new jacks who don't know you well enough to remain skeptical.

"Brooklyn Way 2" is great and has been in rotation for a while. The guy has a great, soulful (yes yes), world-weary voice and an authoritative mic presence, both qualities that he shows off in that song.

I disagree. I think he sounds quite feeble and bored with himself.

Oh. Well complex, forced poetry is a major scourge these days, so it's a relief that he takes an opposite approach.

But speaking seriously for a second, are Maino's deficiencies as a writer and a vocalist not apparent to you when he's alongside Consequence ( a wholly forgettable artist at this point, mind you) and rapping over a better beat than usual? There's simplicty that resonates and there's simplicity that sounds lazy and uninspired.

Unlike your boy, Mr. Flame, his rhymes don't belie who he actually is either.
Oh. Who is he actually? I'm not really familiar with Maino on a personal level. Enlighten me.

There might not be a more forgettable rapper to come out this decade and find minor success than Maino. He is simply unremarkable. Most semi-popular rappers have one or two lines that end up sticking out regardless of if I actually "like" them or not. Maino has zero. I would rather listen to Jungle.

Maino is far more interesting when beating up other rappers then when he is actually rapping.

What I meant is, if that's the best praise one can muster, than why be surprised that "the velcro shoes" set or whoever thinks he's pretty much a lucky hack and nothing else?

Honestly, I haven't heard enough of his discography to completely dismiss him, but the 20 or songs I have heard consistently leave me with the impression that he's marginally and maybe even minimally talented.
