Poignant Songs

Post by Thun »

Pre-emptive  and :owens:

What are the rap songs that put you in that bittersweet mood?

This thread will be a safe place - though memories are for faggots, we'll just choose to ignore that. Should be interesting to see if there is any overlap between the selections here and the ones in the Feel Good thread.

I'll start off with the single most obvious and one of the best examples:

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WTOD8PUWIug?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WTOD8PUWIug?fs ... n_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Call me a faggot, but "for now it's all a dream/ 'cause I find myself in the place where I'm last seen" is one of the genre's most well crafted, beautifully sad couplets, amidst many others in Ghost's verse, which ends in the incredible, unintentonal bit of comedic relief "sunshine plays a major part in the daytime."

Can't say I love all these songs but I think they fit the bill

Okay, well why don't you post the ones that you do specifically love? Learning why people dig music is way more interesting than reading a thematic list of songs, no?

I love the G rap song. Used to love the Fellowship song (talk about aging poorly).
I guess poignant isn't my bag really. Carry on.

This would be my personal choice, shed a tear more than once listening to it and me and my mom danced to it at my wedding.

All That I've Got is You and For Da Brothaz are favs for me as well.

Tragedy's Grand Groove Remix and the other one about his mother, Permanently Scarred.

Can anyone tell me the song the singing on the latter is interpolated from? It's the male vocalist 2/3rds through the song: 'Days and nights are getting colder, I can't take it anymore, death is knocking at my door etc'

O.C.'s Born 2 Live of course

Third verse of T.R.O.Y

The Legion's Rest In Peace

Bits of Nore's I Love My Life

Cormega's Fallen Soldiers

sorry if these have been mentioned, I can't see the youtube links right now
Kool Keith: I wore a straw hat with a feather to the last Source Awards. When I got to Madison Square Garden everybody was looking at me. When I got back home I seen everybody and their mother in their video wearing a fuckinג€™ straw hat with a feather in it.

Tim Dog: ג€œWhat Kool Keith gonna wear? Iג€™m gonna do that shit in my video. Iג€™m gonna wear that shit really quick. Whatג€™s Tim Dog gonna wear?ג€

Personal favs that speak to my somewhat trite and emo backpack nature.

Guess Who - Goodie Mob

Balcony Beach- Latryx

Stepfather Factor - El-P

Hey Mama - Kanye West (original unruined by overproduction version)

tried to embed videos, but links didn't work.

The hook is tear-inducing but in a beautiful rather than sad way in spite of the song, "you used to hold me, told me that I was the best..." and so on.

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lrudMt-28WU?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lrudMt-28WU?fs=1&hl=da_DK" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

One of the most perfect attemps to make religious soul-searching in to a rapsong

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/OYMtp0ZW_IE?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/OYMtp0ZW_IE?fs=1&hl=da_DK" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Veru poignant because you can place yourself in his shoes even if you don't have a terminal illnes, you can actually feel his pain irrespective of the song title

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1Q3V11banDQ?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1Q3V11banDQ?fs=1&hl=da_DK" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

The first verse give me chills, this guy is so good

"we ball like ghetto-children in life tournaments
lusting for platinum-chains and ice-ornaments"

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Km6IfpBGDvw?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Km6IfpBGDvw?fs=1&hl=da_DK" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

emo "fuck everyone" anthem that somehow isn't pussy

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KLUgBa01i9w?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KLUgBa01i9w?fs=1&hl=da_DK" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

here's my controversial HHI-era choice

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tV_3wL4XvMk?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tV_3wL4XvMk?fs=1&hl=da_DK" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Last Emperor & Too Poetic - "One Life"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZs2BZZHrU8

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cZs2BZZHrU8?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cZs2BZZHrU8?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Hearing someone rap about what's killing them mere months before it actually does is something I don't believe I've heard replicated before or since. The way Poetic goes from his very personal feelings to just listing everything around him and letting the listener fill in the blanks is really soul crushing.

Gangstarr - In Memory Of

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/sh ... on=8,0,0,0" width="335" height="28" id="divplaylist"><param name="movie" value="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist? ... 853123-9f5" /><embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist? ... 853123-9f5" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashpl ... d></object>

Guru dives into these memories seemingly at random. "Eyes so serious, you told me hold my head" is really fucking vivid about a person who's gone, and then that second verse about a good dude who was stabbed in his sleep, "I wish you was here cause your philosophy was mad deep" just hits home.

Bushwick Bill - Times Is Hard

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/sh ... on=8,0,0,0" width="335" height="28" id="divplaylist"><param name="movie" value="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist? ... 853302-5c8" /><embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist? ... 853302-5c8" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashpl ... d></object>

"It's kinda rough starting over, but it's worth the pain/ Instead of getting stuck with the same ol' same." Everybody's had hard times, and had to best move on from something. Gets you down but also motivated to get up.

Crooked I - Medicine (HHW Reloaded 6)

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/sh ... on=8,0,0,0" width="335" height="28" id="divplaylist"><param name="movie" value="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist? ... 853065-f88" /><embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist? ... 853065-f88" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashpl ... d></object>

The whole verse is one long quotable, but some standouts:

"Everybody wanna be hood, they're so fuckin dumb
Tell me why they're running to everything I'm running from
What the fuck, you live in a bubble, boy? It's troublesome
See those white sheets on the street? You could be under one
Coroner calling your mother, down goes another son
and the world keeps spinning, just like it's nothing, huh"

"Crooked, you done shot at dudes, you a hypocrite
My nigga they shot at me first, that's why I did the shit
That was long ago, I'm on a different tip
to no longer look over my shoulder, it's magnificient"

"Hip hop moguls, they were my inspiration
when I was homeless and sleeping at the bus station
Hungry as a hostage, imagine my frustration
I earned this here right to speak to my young nation"

TOO REAL.
Some of those lines get me everytime.

Add undying love and k-issing off 'i am.' the first is a certified classic that sounds like a non comic version of slick ricks verse on treat em like a prostitute. The second I know people will hate on cause all they hear is the hook, but the verses are dope. Nas talking about his wife in a semi honest way, lotta emotion in that song, deep no homo.
