McLEAN, Va. ג€“ Federal prosecutors in Virginia have shut down one of the world's largest file-sharing sites, Megaupload.com, and charged its founder and others with violating piracy laws.

The indictment accuses the company of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed Thursday, one day after websites shut down in protest of two congressional proposals intended to thwart the online piracy of copyrighted movies and TV programs.

Megaupload.com has claimed it is diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material.

The indictment says at one point, Megaupload was the 13th most popular website in the world.

nice bit of marketing on MU's part - I doubt Swizz actually has much to do with it on some Jack Tunney ish.

Is this gonna be the new thing then, everyone's gonna have an affiliation with these type of sites instead of a label?

i think it would benefit the artist, because it'll widen their audience by handing out free music via these download sites, but at the same time they shouldn't disown their record labels. they need those too for marketing purposes.

Agreed. I always thought Money, Cash, Hoes sounded like someone threw a Yahama keyboard down a flight of stars and recorded it.

Not rly. After all it's a filesharing network, not a Brooklyn-based syndicate of stick-up kids, dealers and bootleggers who use a record label as a money-laundering front.
