I never quite understood how Ja Rule got to level he did. Im not saying he didnt deserve it per se, just never got how he got such heights during his run.

On an underground level, it always baffled me that Kweli reached the status he did.
But, yeah, Pitbull is the correct answer.

Underground level you can now say Mac Miller.

Birdman has a net worth of $125 million. He hustled, brain washed and ate off others. It's not like he was Dre where he gets a pass for that. Birdman, as a rapper is atrocious.

Birdman is half of the only great Lil Wayne album

and half the greatest tag team since Bodie and Doyle

hes a terrible man irl and has had many of his rapper's lives and royalties tooken so maybe he doesnt deserve it in the sense that this kinda malarkey isnt on in a just world but he definitely deserves to be a cash money billionaire and the #1 stunna. imho, Eazy, Puff, Master P and other similar unscrupulous types who bought their way in also deserve it since they each have at least one more classic album than beloved woe is me rapper dudes like Ras Kass.

The Game, Kweli, Mos, Tyler and near all of the saltines especially El-P, Mac Lethal, Mac Miller and Macklemore do not deserve it

Even as a fan (reflection eternal stuff primarily) I'd have to say he definitely benefited from right place/right time/right associations.

Kweli just knew how to hustle his shit right. Got the right folks to co-sign him and he was able to develop his own brand that not everyone follows (this board included). In comparison to Mos Def, oh I mean Yasiin Bey, I thought it would've went the other way around.

Mos got into acting more and music a little less. Talib's presence in music in comparison has been more if you look at their solo catalogs to date. It just seemed like Talib would be more underrated than Mos at one point instead of striking deals with Warner Bros. and etc.

i dont wanna take away success from anyone cus i feel like most of these cats put in the work in some capacity to get where they are at, but cats whose general success i am confused by, based on their output/skills:

berner
stalley

i feel like stalley barely even rhymes and well berner, is berner, i always thought he was more of a west coast branson that a rapper

Berner's White Album is absolutely outstanding. Personal classic.

I can't comment on material success, because "deserve" has nothing to do with market forces.

As far as critical acclaim/good will/ reputation:

Action Bronson
Big Sean
Mac Miller
Phife
Run DMC
Joe Budden
NORE
Nate Dogg
MOP
T. I.

hasn't berner been around longer than bronson too?

He meant Branson as in "4 pounds of weed plants from Branson, now we lampin'"
and yes, he is.

Hes got amazing taste in beats though and when its possible to power through his cornholioin/hes being tolerable he has made some really good songs

to berner's credit, however, i am not sure many people actually fuck with his catalog, beyond blastmaster

I generally think success is not a function of talent or skill necessarily, but more of a function of how hard someone works and how good they are at tapping into what people want. Just like in business and life, plenty of people "get ahead" who aren't the smartest or the most talented in their professions. So by that metric, I'd have to say it would probably be someone who gets lucky on a viral video, but didn't really have the work ethic to maintain their success afterward. Kind of the modern equivalent of a one hit wonder.

So probably someone like Kitty Pride.

Essentially anyone (save for a few exceptions which I'd have to sit down and think long and hard on (nh @ "long and hard on")) who debuted post-2008.

Yeah, I'm curious, what are the best Mack 10 songs/appearances?

Mack 10 never deserved the hate he got. Bow Down and his debut are great albums.
