Credit where Credit is Due....

Post by Henessee Williams »

If I was given a sample by someone for the intent of me flipping it and making a beat out of it....how do I technically give credit to the individual who found it for me. What is the right nomenclature for that kind of contribution?

associate producer? ???

There was little to no involvement beside playing a record and suggesting that it be manhandled by myself.
But I want to make sure that I give the proper and appropriate respect becasue I am grateful.

thanks mmmuarks.

yes, shout outs for sure...production credit? not in my opinion. i've thrown samples to other producers to use and never expected credit for it. if it's a friend of yours that points out a dope sample, or a producer you work with that's just not into the sample and just throws it to you to flip they don't deserve co-producers credit....in my opinion.

so if you download a set of drums off a website, you should give that website co-production credit on your track? if you buy a sample CD, you give the makers of that CD co-production credit on your track? i guess i better start adding craig's records as a co-producer on my tracks since the owner is always pulling shit out for me he know's i'd like.

technically Has is right.
finding the right sample is instrumental (no pun) in the composition, so a good shout out is in order.
In the end the sample becomes the tip of the iceberg in regards to the entire piece, so a co-production might be overzealous.

anyway, thanks y'all.

finding the sample has nothing to do with arranging it, thats like saying technically u should give co production credits to the original artist because they played it.

its a cute idea but u know theres nothing u do that even remotely resembles a completely different song, even premiers tracks have easy to tell samples if u heard the song they came from
