Your favorite type of sample?

Post by Combo7 »

Sort of an odd poll, but at least it's something different.

While breakbeats are the backbone of hip hop, they almost never make my jaw drop like a well-flipped piano or horn sample can. At gunpoint I might go with piano but it's damn close.

Flute won't get a lot of votes, but a good flute loop can be NASTY.

difficult, came down to drums/piano/horns for me, drums are easiest to emulate, so those were out, but piano and horns HAVE to be live or sampled, and there's nothing sicker than an ill piano sample.

See, they serve different purposes. Piano samples serve as a dope foundation for a song, horns are good for a change up during the hook and strings bring atmospherics (filler noise so the track doesn't sound too spare). Guitar can drive a song well, but it's a matter of finding the right piece. Microphone Fiend and You Played Yourself are great examples of masterfully flipped guitar loops.

I voted for piano, get the right tone and it's wicked.

Horns are great because as a whole they are more obscure to get a hold of good samples of. Why the piano is such a beautiful instrument (especially in comparison to the horns), it's relatively easy to get your hands on great samples to flip, so therefore you have to respect the horns steez.

Also, I love when someone takes a drum loop that has been done and done and flips it in such a way that not only does it sound great, but it's also hard to recognize. For example, taking a straight drum loop and chopping it to give it swing etc.

Frsh poll. I agree with Sankofa, the way the sample is flipped and placed in the arrangements is the x factor. Drums are typically the main ingredient of a joint but can be freaked to stand out. A dope piano sample can make a track ominous serious business. Strings are more artful and can bring out different vibes while keeping a steadfast rhythm or can go completely bonkers the way RZA kicked off WTF. Vocals can elevate a track to greatness, the human element never fails to touch. De La have been utilizing this since the Prince Paul era. Flute loops have a nice flare even though seldom used. Bass loops are powerful in the right context, Eric B went off in 92 with it. Horns never fail to be striking, IMO it's the most expressive instrument. There is much language in the way a horn is played. A horn can bring out textures, colors, rhythms and a myriad of emotions in just a few notes. Gotta go with that.
