Beat battle discussion thread

EDIT:

I'll leave this poll open for a day or two. We'll roll with whichever one gets the most votes.

choice #1 - We all remix the same track and can use whatever samples we want

choice #2 - everyone submits one mp3 as a sample source, and each person can use everyone else's mp3s to make their beats.

choice #3 - We all use the same group of pre-selected mp3s or albums for our sample sources.

How should we organize it?

I kinda liked what we did before...everyone uploads one mp3 of their choice to be used as a sample source, and we all use each others samples to make our beats.

I'm in. I need some motivation to churn out something new. But I tend to like the prepackaged-sample type competitions a bit better. The one we did with the Ennio Morricone soundtracks was awesome to me. Lots of room for variety.

Of course you do, you put on a three-ring circus and the rest of us watched and applauded when the lights went down.

Fuckin' show-off.

I always forget about the battles. Upload a sample and not visit the board for a week or two. If this does happen I'll make sure not to forget this time.

this is kind of a good point. maybe each contestant should receive periodic PM updates? or at least one like a couple days before the end of the battle.

im down, we should do a ranking system though and then come up with a final tally. like mf bob got 1 1 2 4 3 votes, get me?

and everyone who submits has to review each track

no like, everyone who votes just ranks in order whos beat they liked
1. alchemist
2. rza
3. pete rock

then at the end its like
alchemist got these votes 1 1 5 2 3

and then they get added up so whoever has the lowest number is the winner. we did this before about 3 years ago

That ranking system is a great idea. I thought you meant everyone rates the beats on a 1 to 5 scale.

'Cuz I was gettin' ready to basically give everybody a 2 after everyone else rated the beats fairly.

Sorry for the delay...here's how we'll do this.

I don't have any ideas for a sample package, so everyone who wants to enter the battle, upload one mp3 of your choice that will be used as a sample source. Each person can use everyone else's mp3s to make their beats with.

You can add your own drums and bassline, but don't use any samples outside of the songs that people provide when making your beat.

Every poster who enters the battle will be expected to vote and give their opinions on all of the other beats. This will make sure that every participant gets some solid feedback.

For the voting, I was thinking that instead of having to rank all the beats in order, each voter should just list their top 3. A first place vote gets 3 points, a second place vote gets 2 points, and a third place vote gets 1 point. The person with the most points wins the battle. How does that sound?

Everyone who wants to participate, you have until Sunday to sign up and post your sample source.

i'm down i just really dont like the "upload your samples and only use those" idea, kinda takes all the fun out of it for me. i think it would be cooler if someone chose an acapella and we all remixed that or something.

but fuck it. either way im down, count me in.

^We could do a remix battle if that's what others are up for. It doesn't matter to me. We haven't had one of those in a couple years.

Thoughts anyone?

My thoughts are that people are just gonna take pre-constructed beats, fit the vocals to them and submit. Which is fine ethically, but that sucks the fun out of this whole thing.

I much preferred when you uploaded the Good, Bad & Ugly soundtrack, etc and we had to build beats from that. It was a challenge (plus I had a gang of new samples to work with).

I'm down either way. Just saying.
