Official 2011 MLB Season Thread

Post by Dwight Strawberry »

Opening Day is upon us...2 days away! Baseball is back and my daily dose of sports comfort is here for the next 6 months.

Sure, the Mets are being picked by many to finish below .500 and in 4th or 5th place, but this season is special...This is a new regime! No more Minaya, no more Manuel, Castillo has taken his .250 SLG % to Philadelphia, Oliver Perez has accepted a minor league contract to be the Washington Nationals bullpen catcher, this is a great fucking year man!

I see a 2005ish season for the Mets. I have high hopes they can keep their head above water and possibly be an 81 to 86 win team and flirt with a wild card spot until August. Most importantly, I see a team that has a GM that provides direction, a manager with passion and fire, and a group of ball players who want to get back to just playing baseball and having fun.

If this team can stay healthy, this lineup has a chance to be one of the best in baseball and put alot of runs on the board:

Reyes - .285/12 hr/40 sb - Stay Healthy Jose!
Pagan - .280/15 hr/35 sb - Ball Player
Wright - .290/30 hr/105 rbi/20 sb - 2009 is history
Beltran - .270/25 hr/85 rbi/10 sb - Enough left in tank for 1 more contract?
Bay - .265/20 hr/80 rbi - Canadian
Davis - .260/30 hr/90 rbi - MONSTER! He will be hitting clean-up come May
Emaus - Upgrade over Castillo FOR SURE!
Thole - I have a feeling he will be the Mets C for a while

On the other hand, the starting pitching will be quite interesting in 2011. Johan will be missed and hopfully comes back in June and has some juice left.

Mike Pelfrey - Opening Day Starter ( ) - Pelfrey tries hard, but he is in for a rough season I think
Jon Neise - I like this kid. I think he has the make-up to be a solid #3 in his career...too bad he is a #2 for the Mets
RA Dickey - FEAR THE KNUCKLEBALLER!
Chris Young - Like this signing...Now lets see if he gives them more than 10 starts
Chris Capuano - See above

So, what is my final prediction?...I'm going to go with 84 wins and 3rd place. Things are getting better Mets fans. Sure, The Wilpins are broke, but that is all back office shit. The Mets will be around as long as baseball is around; and the World Series trophy will find a comfy home in Flushing again someday...sooner than later I hope!

Enjoy the season :phila: and good luck in all of your fantasy leagues.

Who's all going to opening day?

I'm bagging off work Friday, will be in my My Entire Team Sucks shirt and warpaint and will probably be completely incoherent by noon.

The Mets actually open down here vs the Marlins but I am going to pass

We have the first family Disney World trip the week of 4/11 so I need to save the loot.

I'll watch on my couch, order a pie, and drink a dozen beers for 20 bucks instead.

A ball game is an automatic c-note at least for me when I go.

at least both teams have young talent that you can enjoy before the yankees sign them later in their careers.

Baller.

Opening Day is tomorrow over here, so I will break out some National League hat for today.
Anybody cop a new jersey for this season?
I thought about getting the A's yellow alternate jersey when Modell's had their 40% off sale, but those 'Cool Base' versions they sell feel cheap as fuck.

Didn't get any jerseys, but I copped a Manny and Hellickson t-shirt because I'm poor.

Word. The only one i've missed in the last decade-plus was (saddingly) opening day '09 after we won it all. Bandwagon faggots drove the prices up to ridiculous levels. If I remember correctly they were $300-400 just for nosebleeds.

The weather tomorrow is going to be unbelievably shitty. Might even get some snow tonight. Going to have to get extra drunk.

No new jerseys for me yet but I think I might cop the Utley home alternate at some point.

In other news, Phils dropped that faggot Castillo :rockout: Back to Puerto Rico!

Verlander hasn't allowed any runs but he hasn't looked good so far. I remember him varying his pitches, seems like he's relying on the fastball way too much. Pitching into a full count against everyone it seems like.

And just like that Teixiera crushes a 95 mph middle of the zone and up fastball into Brooklyn.

Soriano and Rivera in the 8th and 9th is pretty much unfair to the rest of the league.

A focused Joba might make the bullpen even nastier.

Always nice to win the opener.

Listening to the announcers talk about how unfair it is for a right handed hitter to face Soriano, and how "Cabrera is finding that out right now" I thought "Yeah, cause he never faced him before." Then I thought, well, even if he had, Miggy was probably shit faced so he doesn't remember.

So happy to have baseball back!
