A total of 156 players head out on day one of the US Open each year, all attempting to become the next name to go down in the US Open History of this famous major. Thousands of players have all made a bid to land the coveted first prize and trophy over the years but only a small number of players can actually boast to have won the prestigous trophy.

Some of the greatest golf players to have played the game are among the elite list of players to have won the US Open. Past greats such as Jack Nicklaus, Hale Irwin and the late Payne Stewart all won at least two US Open Championships.

Current players who have won the Championship at least twice include Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, both of whom will be popular in the 2011 US Open Odds.

Jim Furyk will be looking to add to his 2003 title this year, whilst Phil Mickelson will be looking to end his US Open jinx at the 2011 event. Despite winning the US Masters and US PGA Championship, Mickelson has never won the US Open yet has finished second on a staggering five occasions. Martin Kaymer, Lee Westood and Luke Donald lead the European charge whilst Rory Mcilroy will be determined to bounce back from his US Masters dissapointment.

2011 US Open Golf Championships - Congressional Country Club

The US Open will be returning to Maryland and more specifically the Congressional Country Club in June 2011. The club last held the US Open back in 1997 when it was won by the South African Ernie Els, who will no doubt be looking forward to heading back to the scene of his triumph.

Latest 2011 US Open Golf Odds.

The tournament itself will be held on the impressive Blue Course at Congressional, which is considered to be one of the very best courses in the world. The course has been playing host to the AT&T Championships on the PGA Tour in recent seasons, with Tiger Woods hosting the tournament in recent years.
Holes

The Blue Course was renovated in 2009 meaning it will play differently to the last time the US Open was held here in 1997. The first hole offers players a good opportunity to get off to a birdie start due to its relative simplicity and flat green. Holes 5 and 8 represent two other good birdie opportunities early on.

As youג€™d expect on a US Open golf course there are a number of challenging holes. Hole 2 is the longest par 3 on the course, and with no less than six bunkers surrounding the green will represent the first real challenge for players.

Hole 10 is particularly tricky as any shot that falls short of the green will most definitely fall into the water, therefore distance control is very important on this hole. Hole 16 is a pivotal hole on the course and has the potential to determine the outcome of the US Open, as is hole 18. Players must be extra careful on these late holes as any errors could see their dreams fade and burn.
Hey, by the way who's Curt?

If McIlroy holds the lead going in to Sunday, then collapses again, I'll feel terrible for the kid. But he's strokin' after day 1.

how can it? i'm missing the tiger factor, the next tier would have to post consecutive 66s; and that wont happen. unless he chokes, hard, it's almost a non factor for your sports weekend dollar. fuckin weak

rory >>> usa

I'm just catching scores.

I heard he hit 17 of 18 greens Thursday? Unreal.

actually, these young kids have 'home made' swings that are not technically proficient. with that said, i am hardly one who has his head wrapped around the technical aspects of what a correct swing is and isn't. Rory's torque and pronation of the head club is impressive, but the younger golfers are having success with swings that are unique

at least... so says the experts on the golf channel.

i'm taking dad out to play tomorrow so i'll have to dvr the open and run it back tomorrow evening

I hope not.

Still though, I put a little modest bet on Lee Westwood @ +2500 today lol...

he's been so dominant that if you combined the field into 1player where you take the best round from each day they'd only be tied with him going into today lol
