Nice extension by the Wild to lock up Brolin. Good young D-man for sure. Good price for him as well.

Olli Maata has a tumor on his thyroid. 85% chance that it is cancer, but they said he will not need chemo or radiation. He found out about it in training camp. He is getting surgery next week, but will continue to play until then.

Not to jinx the gawd, but 8 stops through 40 minutes against a severely overmatched Rangers team? Hmmmm...another goose egg??

Mr. Hockey had a stroke early sunday morning. scored a goal and served a double minor for slashing on monday night in his old man beer league.

kinda serious actually. seems to be alert and knows everybody. can't stand on his own though and can only talk a little. this sucks, but this is the type of shit that happens at his age.

Hope Gordie has a speedy recovery.

I was at the Flames-Canadiens game last night and it was INTENSE. Flames lost 2-1 in the shootout but the game was amazing. Felt like a playoff game for sure. Carey Price stood on his head and stole it for Montreal. Dude was fucking unbelievable.

Bobby Ryan bought a luxury box at the Canadian Tire Centre for the next eight years to host kids from the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. that's class.

The Stone/Lazar/Hoffman line has been our best over the past few games. The kids are playing great, two-way hockey.

I figured Coliacovo was signed just to be the 7th defenseman but, nope, Splodey Bones is in the lineup.

Random Sample how do you feel about the re-signing of Fleury? Good or bad? The length of the term is decent at 4 years but is he worth 5.75 per year given his playoff performance?

it's arguable, but they might have the best defence 1 through 6 in the league. and hiller will steal them some games. they might just hang around long enough to make the playoffs.

It's certainly arguable, but mos def an interesting one. I certainly like what the Flames have going (not 100% positive these are the usual pairings, but anyway):

Gio/Brodie
Russell/Wideman
Smid/Engelland

Throw in Raph Diaz and your seven is certainly solid. Calgary only gives up 2.21 gpg and those six players combined are +18 thus far.

For comparisons sake, Sens roll with:

Phillips/EK
Cowen/Ceci
Gryba/Wiercioch

2.36 gpg, and those six are just +2. Grybes and Ceci lead us at 6 and 4 respectively. EK -7 Cowen -3.

Anaheim:

Lindholm/Beauchemin
Fowler/Lovejoy
Stoner/Vatanen

1.93 gpg and those guys are +17.

Hawks have been rolling with:

Keith/Seabrooke
Superintendent Hjalmarsson/Oduya
TVR/Rundblad

Lowest gpg in the league at 1.77 and those six are just a combined +9.

Not that gpg and +/- tell the whole story, but the Flames blueline certainly measures up. Not even the Blues guys are up there in terms of +/-.

The fact that Karlsson is a -7 through 11 games is fucking alarming to me. I know he plays heavy minutes, but the guy is wearing the C and is still (though certainly not as frequently) making some really dumb decisions in our zone. The guys that have taken major strides for us are Ceci and, to a lesser extent, Cowen. Gryba is better as well.

Add to this that Andy/Lehner have bailed us out over and over and over this season and I'm still not sold on Ottawa's early season promise.

Big game against the Wild off a huge win over the Wings. Need points.

Sorry, was talking about D setups and went off on a Sens tangent there.

I think it is a good thing. A lot of his shortcomings happen because the players in front of him leave him out to dry. Pens defense has been shit and the forwards don't pick up on their defensive assignments very well. Dan Bylsma's shitty system didn't help either. They barely played any defense.

This is a good read about Fleury too. 5.75 is a steal when you think about it.

The fact Fleury is on the same-ish pay scale as Mike Smith and less than Varly is already a win.

Pretty good so far. Out of the 3 main D pairings him and Smid play the least but they are a pretty good physical tandem. He beat the shit out of some dude from Washington the other night. There's times where he seems a bit slow but overall he has been decent.

In regards to the Flames defense, all the pairings have been pretty good but what has really helped them out is the rest of the team coming through with shot blocking. That, and the ability to exit the defensive zone quickly with a strong pass out to supporting forwards have been 2 major keys for the success so far this year.
