THE JUNGLE / D&B THREAD

Post by step one »

Just wondered if anyone here was into it as I check this forum occasionally and havent seen it mentioned. Not into as much as I used to be but from 94-04 was well on top of it all and into stuff across the board from the ragga/Hip Hop stuff to the more chilled/melodic Bukem/Hospital recs thing.

In the UK its quite closely aligned with the Hip Hop/"urban" music thing but I get the impression that in the US its more closely associated with "electronica" or whatever you refer to dance music as these days.

anyway, I didnt want to bother posting anything unless theres a few people into it so what you saying bout it?

Yeah, used to be well into up until '98ish. Favoured the darker, ragga stuff. Used to go to a lot of nights in Essex, Kent and London. Got bored of it around the time of Goldie and co - felt the scene lost its edge, although less intimidating women started going to the nights... Still listen to it, but only old mixtapes - Randall, Kenny Ken, Brockie etc. Never really bought any vinyl - just tapes from raves.

Whereabouts are you from?

And you ever peep this site for old tape rips? Its fucking amazing.

Im in Surrey just outside West London. I used to go to a lot of nights like One Nation, Moondance, Helter Skelter (alot of my mates were into hardcore unfortunately!) and then moved away from the big raves to the more club based things like The End or Movement @ Bar Rumba.Used to love Hype, Mampi Swift, Zinc etc

I'll try and throw up a few mixes of some old skool stuff later. Maybe it'll jog a few peoples memories.

i'll definitely check that website. seems like D&B blogs are quite hard to come by!

We had a pretty good DnB thread going here for a while, but no reason not to have another one.

Not surprisingly, I was into the harder/darker stuff back in the day. Liked Ed Rush a lot. Of the newer shit I've heard, Noisia, Black Sun Empire and Andy C are pretty cool, although sometimes too keyboardy.

Anyone in the really hard/fucked up/dark category you guys would recommend, new or old?

a friend of mine used to like this kind of style. He was well into Technical Itch, early Bad Company, Dom & Roland and DJ Trace (who was on No U Turn with Ed Rush back in the 90s). Panacea was another name that springs to mind but that was a bit more experimental I think. Some fat German dude I think.

i'm at work right now but will try and put some stuff up later.

used to go to club Kinetic in Stoke, saw Grooverider there a couple of times. also used to go down to Blue Note, around about the time Goldie was going out with Bjork. once we walked in there and Bjork was on the decks, playing some of the most slamming breakbeat Ive ever heard. the dancefloor was covered in trendy youts with their backpacks on...surreal...

Im really into the new 'wobble' shit. I know it gets a lot of hate, but stuff like DJ Pleasure, PA, Heist etc....can't get enough of it.

Ive done a couple of mixes of some brand new dnb shit that I could upload if anyone's interested...

Definately. Like everyone else, I used to be into it back int he days. I haven't checked for it in the past few years but I still like it. I used to really be into Ragga and Dark shit, but always had love for Zinc. Casino Royal was my shit.

I meant more ragga inspired jungle. I don't really know much about ragga.

Marvelous Caine released an EP of stuff in 1995 and this typifies the stuff I used to listen to. Sits in the hard/fucked up/ragga category for me. Amen break, heavy bass, with someone babbling in patois over the top. Siiiick.

Marvelous Caine - 'Gun Talk'

Marvellous Cain - Hitman (Featuring Cutty Ranks).mp3

bassface sascha - livin music
serum + bladerunner - snakefist
mutated forms - blue magic
nu:tone - mrs.jones
sinistarr - park avenue
ego trippin - vibes (st.eluce remix)
nosia - strange owl experiment
heist - warmer days
bionic1 - bump and grind
q project - peace of mind
break - last chance
dj origin - breaking heartz
digital era - hill street blues
evil quest - high off love

http://www.zshare.net/audio/60641880a934fdf5/

mix I made a couple of days ago, some tracks are brand new, oldest is about a year old (tried putting this on divshare, rapidshare and sendspace and they all failed, hope zshare works. should be able to stream it). there's a lot of crap new dnb about like Pendulum and Chase + Status, but also a lot of good IMO

@step one that mix looks heavy, will check it later...

there's a whole bunch of mid 90s dope dragon (roni size, krust and suv) 12"s here. anything from DDRAG21 and before is the best stuff, 22 onwards is newer and not so good - http://rapidlibrary.com/index.php?q=dope+dragon

This is awesome. Unfortunately I don't really like vocals over dnb, they usually ruin the track, I think. I can deal with it, though

Does anyone remember the Journey By DJ series, particularly the DJ Rap one? Being trying to replace the one I lost. She was very fit by the way.

This tape was a bit of a classic round my area back in the mid 90s.
DJ Hype on 3 decks at World Dance in 1994. Whistle and horn posse in full effect!

DJ Hype _ MC GQ - World Dance 1994.mp3 - 25.76MB

The noise when he drops Firefox & 4Tree 'Warning' is unbelievable.
