Dark Castle called me and told me to come down and hang out with them at the Baroness/Iron Age show at One Eyed Jacks in Nola. I was already planning on making the trip so I took off work early Wednesday afternoon and took my drummer along for his birthday. We started drinking Elijah Craig in the hotel and made our way to Toulouse street around 10pm. The crowd started off small and we began pounding Budweiser and hanging out with some fuckheads. Dark Castle went on. I noticed Stevie is wearing more make up than in the past and i proceeded to give her shit all night about being nominated one of the hottest chicks in metal according to Revolver magazine. They played their usual set, seemed a little sloppier than normal but they were drinking with us earlier. Stevies Equiptment zapped out on their last song and John Baizley came over to give her some tips. She looked at me and said "i fried something in my pedal board" to which I replied about it having something to do with how hot metal she is. After that i shopped some merch and copped a sick ass limited Baizley print of a kitten on top of a skull for my living room. things fuckin awes. Iron Age went on and they shouted me out for being the only one who knew the riffs and words. They fucking killed it. I really enjoyed watching them and hanging out meeting those fucks. If you havent checked them out yet do yourself a favor and take the recomendations we have been giving them. I hooked up a show with them next year. A short time passed and Baroness took the stage with a fury. Its been a long time since Ive seen a band destroy as hard as they did. They played for 2 hours straight and let out a ferocious encore. I had fucking goosebumps and got shitty drunk. I was amazed at how much energy they were putting into it. They played everything you would have wanted to hear and pretty much all of Red and Blue. They sounded as good and better than they did on the albums and the tone they get from those bad cat heads is supreme. I was fully stoked and as much as they have become media darlings they really deserve alot of attention. They do their own thing fearlessly and bring a war of a live show. I hung out some with Summer and the new Guitar player, both who were down to earth as fuck and seemed genuinely stoked to be where they are.

10/10 show
Baroness rules.

they are back on track, but the atmosphere and catchiness of classic FF just doesn't ever happen.

Gene Hoglan and Byron Stroud of Strapping Young Lad are in the band now, but you really wouldn't know it. It's kind of really dumb to get an awesomely creative drummer into the band and then make him play exactly like your old drummer.

I like meshuggah's recorded stuff fine, but their live show was pretty incredible, when I saw them in....2000? 99? with SOIA and Slayer, which is a pretty hilarious lineup. At least I think that was the lineup.

I've seen them about 6 times, they crushed every time. The whole show feels like bricks are falling on your head, especially the new, slower stuff with the 8-string guitars.

They also go out of their way to really bring you the best possible sound, you can tell they are very anal about it.

Since most regular amps don't really respond that well to the really low tones of the 8-strings, they actually don't even use regular guitar amps, but have their own state-of-the-art PA which they guitars go directly into through a rack.

Needless to say, it pays off, everything sounds so crisp and brutal.

THE TOP 20 METAL ALBUMS OF THE DECADE

1. Cynic ג€“ Traced in Air (2008)

Image

There are many reasons why this is the best metal album of the decade. ג€œTraced in Airג€ was, in some way, a first in metalג€”a reunion album recorded for all the right reasons and in all the right ways. This isnג€™t, as it is in many cases, some band setting aside their differences in hopes of making a few quick bucks and rehashing their old sound, masking it with modern production, and declaring a comeback in order to capitalize on the resurgence of a sound they once pioneered.

This is a group of musicians who stayed in touch, grew as people and musicians over the last 15 years, and converged after a decade and a half to reignite the musical flame they once shared. This album does not sound like middle-aged men trying to relive their glory days, it sounds like friends whose musical chemistry never faded away, jamming and making music that would present a logical continuation of where they left off many years ago. This is the same band that recorded ג€œFocus,ג€ working within the same headspace and still unafraid to follow their hearts and disregard everything else happening around them musically.

Despite not being death metal influenced any longer, (and how could it be with the genre plummeting into an abyss of stagnancy and blandness over the last ten years?) the music is just as exciting and vibrant as it was on ג€œFocus,ג€ and without youthful mistakes such as less-than-stellar production present this time around to tainted the musical perfection.

Cynicג€™s story transcends metal and gives hope to all who believe in the permanence of expression and connections between human beings, and to all those who dare to believe that people playing music they believe inג€”from the heart and without compromiseג€”is something that still exists.

2. Meshuggah ג€“ Nothing (2002)

Image

After the sonic shitstorm that was ג€œChaosphere,ג€ Meshuggah needed to come up with something new that would continue their trailblazing path and take their polyrhythmic assault and battery to an all new level of brutality and complexity. Enter the 8-string guitar and the juggernaut known as ג€œNothing.ג€ Using their signature brand of crushing odd-time signature guitar rumblings and caustic screams over a fat 4/4 groove, Meshuggah detuned their sound, essentially making them a band of three bass players, slowed down their attack to a plodding musical equivalent of collapsing buildings, and invariably changed the face of metal for the second time in their careers.

ג€œNothingג€ bludgeons new listeners and tests the patience of Meshuggahג€™s old fans with hammering mid-tempo horrorג€”each note feeling like a methodically-placed kick in the stomach, each riff as complex as ever, each solo more intergalactic and brooding than the next.

Years later, an arsenal of new technical metal playing, 8-string slinging youngsters, often said to be part of the so-called ג€œDjentג€ movement, continue to musically bow before the throne of ג€œNothingג€™sג€ uncompromising onslaught, but few will ever come close to topping it. It is Meshuggah we are talking about, after all.

3. Isis ג€“ Oceanic (2002)

Image

Every band that makes a change in their musical landscape to make room for more melodic visions and a more varied approach tends to have that one album that sets the bar, with the rest just following suit and building on that initial idea. ג€œOceanicג€ is that album for Isis.

It is arguably the album that ushered in the age of so called post metalג€”the meeting place between the doom influenced hardcore of Neurosis and the swelling crescendo of reverb-laden guitar work associated with the likes of Mogwai and Sigur Ros.

ג€œOceanicג€ is the best Isis has ever been at balancing the two, combing the heavy and beautiful with an audible Tool influence that would emerge more prominently after touring with the Californians.

Though most similar artists of today will cite Neurosis as their prime influence, it is no coincidence that literally hundreds of similar sounding bands came out of the woodwork after ג€œOceanicג€ gained critical acclaim and widespread success.

4. Strapping Young Lad ג€“ s/t (2003)

Image

Devin Townsend and company had the difficult task ahead of them of topping what was arguably the most innovative and visceral expression of the prior decade in metal, the ג€œCityג€ album.

Despite the objections of many fans who wanted to hear ג€œCity 2,ג€ Devin still managed to create an album that stands the test of time and can easily be pronounced the heaviest album of the decade.

The violence and sheer heaviness of ג€œCityג€ was retained, but with the industrial and electronic confusion that made ג€œCityג€ so one-of-a-kind pushed deep into the back of the mix, allowing attention to be focused on the amazing performances of the band instead of the genius of Townsendג€™s abstract vision.

The album is just as relentless and punishing as ג€œCity,ג€ and blends together genres of extreme metal so perfectly and effortlessly that it renders at least 90 percent of current death, thrash and black metal albums absolutely unnecessary.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/M98M6buqbJ8&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/M98M6buqbJ8&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

5. maudlin of the Well ג€“ Bath/Leaving Your Body Map (2001)

ImageImage

This double album is the crowning achievement in experimental metal and a cross-pollination of various genres that have little to do with one another. If someone told me I would love a band that mixes Euro-doom ala Saturnus/My Dying Bride with female vocals, folk/indie acoustic passages, prog and thrash influences guitar solos, I would have laughed in their face.

But motW successfully blend dozens of influences from old Katatonia to Ween so amazingly well that itג€™s hard not to be impressed and enthralled by the level of complexity and care for attention put into these twin albums musically, lyrically, conceptually, and even in the artwork and production that accompanies the music.

Everything is intertwined so naturally and easily, making motW pass the crucial test which most bands with similar aspirations failג€”motW were not trying hard to be different, they just were.

6. Mastodon ג€“ Remission (2002)

Image

Even though Mastodon went on to record albums that were more grandiose, conceptual and better received than ג€œRemission,ג€ this is the album that really kicked it off for them. Everything that is still present in Mastodon, though more prominently in the last several years, can be heard on ג€œRemission,ג€ but in a purer and more aggressive and primal sense.

The busy drumming, the majestic melodies, the Georgian sludge, the complex riffs and shifting time signatures, the mythology-themed lyricsג€”all this was introduced to the world through ג€œRemission.ג€

Though the band has gone on to receive unprecedented success both critically and popularly for music so outwardly non-commercial and niche, the roots of the success and the definition of the style that would define them as one of the best, if not the best, band of the decade can be traced back to this album.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/R5NBft-49OE&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/R5NBft-49OE&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

7. Symphony X ג€“ The Odyssey (2002)

Image

ג€œThe Odysseyג€ can be regarded as perfection in the realm of melodic progressive/power metal. Everything demanded by fans of the genre is encapsulated in this release.

Michael Romeoג€™s guitar work both demonstrates unparalleled technicality and complexity but still harnesses the power of the almighty riff, making him a force to be reckoned with, as very few guitarists can be both so technically endowed and be able to write an amazingly heavy and catchy riff that could rival the likes of Pantera and Judas Priest.

The New Jersey natives are not only blessed with the best guitar player in the genre, they also have the best singer. Russell Allen sounds like he was created in a factory for perfect singers. He has the brawn of Dio, the beauty of Steve Walsh, and the range of Chris Cornell all rolled up into oneג€”and he uses each aspect of his singing accordingly.

Heavy, fast-paced catchy anthems, indulgent instrumental exhibitions, grandiose 25-minute-long epicsג€”ג€œThe Odysseyג€ has a perfect example of every one of these, and then some.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Uhh_JcaJnJA&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Uhh_JcaJnJA&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

8. The Dillinger Escape Plan ג€“ Miss Machine (2004)

Image

After the critical acclaim of ג€œCalculating Infinityג€ and ג€œIrony is a Dead Scene,ג€ which pushed both the experimental and melodic side of the band further, Dillinger needed a grand slam with their next album, and thatג€™s exactly what they got.

Most of the pressure was put on then new singer Greg Puciato, who not only had to live up to the brute force of the debut album, but was also following an EP recorded with none other than Mike Patton, who is both an obvious influence on Puciato and the singer who defines being multi-dimensional in a rock/metal setting.

The band, with Greg leading the way, easily overcame every hurdle, by putting together an album with complexity that further confused all the mathcore rejects trying to copy them and a newfound melodic side that mirrored influences like Faith No More and Nine Inch Nails instead of the emo heartbreak most hardcore bands with clean vocals were spewing forth at the time.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/l8lK6Sf1lqA&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/l8lK6Sf1lqA&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

http://www.rapidshare.com/files/3657019 ... achine.rar

9. Spiral Architect ג€“ A Scepticג€™s Universe (2000)

Image

ג€œA Scepticג€™s Universeג€ is simply and plainly the end-all-be-all of technical metal. No band has come close to pushing the limits of complexity and the listenerג€™s threshold for enduring such levels of instrumental savvy like Spiral Architect.

A big reason for the success of such lofty music was the production of Neil Kernon, who made sure that every instrument was clearly understood, and highlighted the efforts of bassist Lars K. Norberg who puts on a clinic throughout the album. No matter how complex the instrumentation is individually, the listener can focus on each instrument separately and clearly hear whatג€™s going on.

The icing on the cake is singer

Brooklyn Vegan keeps pretty good track of all the live music happening in NY.

Peep Black Bubblegum/BBG's column for all the metal/hardcore coverage/listings (or all posts tagged "metal").

I know you're into a wide range of shit, so some of the more "indie" oriented shit on that site may be of interest to you also.

pretty dope traditional doom, but there are a bunch of albums I put over this one.

Pretty amazing Ozzy worship on the vocal tip.

what did you think of the last candlemass? it had some amazing songs.

I know Messiah is a legend but their new singer Rob Lowe of Solitude Aeturnus is waaay better. He's one of my favorite singers ever.

here's some classic SA shit if you don't know about them.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/G6DGrAvmYG4&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/G6DGrAvmYG4&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I'm going to merge this into the metal thread, btw, so you know where it went.

here's some more obscure doom if you like the more traditional melodic style.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/i9Q3RCpJ8Qc&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/i9Q3RCpJ8Qc&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I think this record is way OOP, I could probably get like 200 for it on ebay.
