Built to Spill is my favorite band and definitely deserve their own thread. I'll start it off by posting a couple live videos from back in the day-

I'm a pretty big fan of this band. I've seen em live half a dozen times at least. I saw them for the first time at a house show in 93. great band.

I'm jealous.

Here's a sweet video from their last album that was directed by Mr. Show's Bob Odenkirk-

Here's a FLAC recording of a '08 concert from Columbia, MO that is considered to be among their finest concerts. The 30+ minute version of Velvet Waltz that closes it out is insane and is split into 3 files.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=86YL0Q7A

The set list-

Traces
Nowhere Nothing Fuckup
Distopian Dream Girl
Gone
Strange
Time Trap
Hindsight
Third Uncle (Brian Eno)
Car
Made Up Dreams
Mess With Time
Nowhere Lullaby
Big Dipper
Velvet Waltz

Really like the first 3 albums, a lil more psyched out. The Built to Spill/Caustic Resin record is one of my all time faves. Dig the shit out of the Treepeople too.

I love the early BTS records, but really, I like the new ones just as much. If I had to rank em, it'd be
1 PFNO
2 There is No Enemy
3 Keep it Like A Secret
4 You In Reverse
5 There's Nothing Wrong With Love
6 Ultimate Alternative Wavers
7 Ancient Melodies of the Future

Even though I rank AMOTF last, I still love it, especially Strange & In Your Mind.

The Normal Years, and Dug's solo album are great too.

You in Reverse is the only one I never got into. Goin' Against Your Mind is ill, but wasn't big into after that.

Really?

It's the loosest, most rockin record in their catalog to me. So many dope guitar solos.

Goin against your Mind, Traces, Liar, The Wait, and Mess With Time are all standouts to me, but I can listen to it from beginning to end. There is No Enemy is lyrically their best record though, and definitely stands up to the earlier records. I've also heard that they'll be working with their old producer Phil Ek on their next album, so that's good news for fans of the older albums.

You'll enjoy that FLAC, story goes that during the concert the band kept playing Velvet Waltz after the venue put the lights on and then the Meat Puppets (who had opened) came out and started playing instruments and banging on things. Had to be a sick show to be at.

I got some other rare tracks that I'll upload later and maybe some Halo Benders stuff as well.

Here's a performance onLetterman in late '09. In typical Built To Spill fashion, they picked the least radio friendly song, in which the only lyrics are-

And if God does exist
I am sure he will forgive
Me for doubting, for he'd see
How unlikely he himself seems

Here's a compilation of a bunch of rare or unreleased Built to Spill tracks. They're all dope but "Forget Remember When" and "Now and Then" which were on the Carry the Zero EP are particularly ill. The first 7 songs are off Halo Benders albums that Martsch made with Calvin Johnson. I tried to get the ones that are the most true to the Built to Spill sound. The rest are off various EP's or were unreleased.

Snowfall
Virginia Reel Around the Fountain
Halo Bender
Lonseome Sundown
Canned Oxygen
On a Tip
Planned Obsolescence
By the Way
Easy Way
Forget Remember When
Now and Then
Just A Habit (original)
Rearrange (Gladiators cover)
They Got Away
The Last Long Song
Water Sleepers

There's Nothing Wrong With Love is the best indie-rock album of the 90's after Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain?

Good shit...I wish I was in your shoes. I didn't get into them until about 5 years ago, it was amazing to get to listen to their whole back catalog at the same time. Talk about good music overload. They have NEVER made a song I don't like and I HIGHLY recommend everything they've ever put out. Perfect From Now On and Keep it Like a Secret are great starting points, but you can't go wrong with any of it.

Happy listening.

I'll probably post another live show or two soon as well.

Treepeople were good. Faster more punkish rock. There's not a lot of similarity to the Built To Spill sound though. Some of Doug's guitar work is comparable, but he only sings on half the songs and the words are always buried in the mix, the other singer doesn't do much for me. Seems like a band where there were a lot of ideas being thrown around and they had to compromise a lot. Where as Built To Spill is 100 percent Doug and a lot more focused.

I kind of liken the Treepeople albums to Doug trying to sound like his influences rather than creating his own sound. He grew up on 80's rock like Dinosaur Jr. and Husker Du and the Treepeople albums feel more true to that type of sound than the BTS records.

Link for a FLAC of another sweet concert. This one from '03 in their hometown Boise. They play both "Now and Then" and "Forget Remember When" which they rarely play live, as well as an extended version of Center of the Universe that hints at the song "Aisle 13" off of There Is No Enemy. Towards the end you can hear Doug thanking the Black Keys for opening for them...would have been a sick show to be at for sure.

01 Three Years Ago Today
02 Center of the Universe
03 Now and Then
04 The Plan
05 Strange
06 Forget Remember When
07 Out of Sight
08 Reasons
09 Stop the Show
10 Alarmed
11 Don't Try
12 Cleo
13 Cortez the Killer (Neil Young Cover)

MP3 for 7" released on Record Store day. It's a live cover of Ripple from the Grateful Dead. Sweet guitar solo at the end.

wish they would have recorded ripple for real instead of pressing a live recording.
Recently been appreciating the National much more than I ever use to, and apparently their next album is all Grateful Dead covers, so I suppose that'll do

Just saw The National and Arcade Fire live tonight. It was supposed to be outdoors at this sweet venue in Indy, but due to showers all week they moved the concert to the State Fairgrounds stadium. This was extra cool because my Dad, who came with me to the concert, saw the Beatles, Zeppelin and several others at the same venue in the 60's. It was a small stadium and I'm sure it was far more intimate than most of their dates on this tour.

I'm admittedly not a big fan of The National, but I've only really listened to their last album. They put on a good show, but it's hard to open for Arcade Fire. This is the first Arcade Fire concert I've seen and it didn't disappoint. They didn't play as long as I thought they would, or play all of my favorite songs, but it was a great performance from a band in the zone.

I would have liked to hear a studio recording of Ripple too, but I like the version they put out. They should put out and album of all the covers they've done over the years. I had a lot of them in that mix I made, but I know there's several others I didn't include. Their cover choices only reinforce my love for the band.
