Seems like the disappointment in that album is 100% universal.

Weird to wait eight years to release an album, then record without your drummer and have it be super shitty.

I don't know why season of mist is releasing it either, their track record is pretty flawless. maybe they didn't hear the album when they signed the contract and when they heard this garbage it was already too late.

I just came home from this show in New Orleans. This was the last show for Tirefire, who have been putting on shows for a while.

I good friends with all these guys. I had no clue you knew them. I wouldnt have missed it if Id been in town but I was in Austin for Chaos In Tejas all weekend. Tirefire were (RIP) one of my favorites.

I'm not a big metal head by any means but I have to thank this thread for introducing me to Devin Townsend. Some of his shit can be hit or miss with me but I'm feeling a lot of his songs.

yeah he's one of the most talented people in metal, but I do prefer the older music when he was torturted, bipolar and on drugs. The new stuff is pretty hit and miss for me, even though I'm a fan boy. Seems like since he's happy now the music has shifted to just focusing on his wacky side.

For definitive works I'd recommend you check out Strapping Young Lad - City, and Ocean Machine - Biomech, though you can't really go wrong with anything he recorded between 97 and 2005.

I'll be focusing on obscure, really underground prog metal from the 90s mostly - trying to stay away from stuff that people normally talk about - highlighting some really obscure gems and stuff I liked growing up as a huge nerd.

This whole "Brutal Supremacy" compilation is pretty promising. I also can't wait for the new Iron Lung.

Also, it's cool to see other New Orleans heads hereabouts.

I picked up a copy while I was at Chaos. Got to see some of the songs live (except Scapegoat). Hatred Surge killed as always. Suprised I dont know some of you NO people. You guys should come hang out more.

One of the best interviews I've read in a long time.

It's clear that Blake says shit to perpetuate his "No, I REALLY don't give a fuck" image, but he manages to say a lot of interesting and honest shit as well.

I didn't know that he doesn't write the lyrics. Kind of blows my mind.

Yeah, was kinda disappointed when I initially found out about that. Then I remembered that Nachtmystium lyrics aren't exactly great to begin with, haha. The shit that he says about COF in that interview while touring with them is pretty hilarious as well. He does definitely come off as trying a little too hard with the "look at me dudes, I do drugs" shtick but that's not really anything new I suppose

Also, the dude that writes the lyrics (Chris Black) has his hand in seemingly everything metal related around these parts (Chicago). I'm sure that at least a few people here have listened to Dawnbringer, which he fronts. In addition to that though, he also fronts a band called High Spirits, who also fucking rule especially if you dig anything in the NWOBHM vein. Couple tracks below if you guys are interested, like I said, I'm a pretty big fan.

are Matt Johnsen and Pharaoh from Chicago too? I know he played a bunch of solos for Nachtmystium and Dawnbringer. Great American power metal band, Tim Aymar of Control Denied fame sings for them, they should have a new one out soon too.

Yeah Sanford Parker and Bruce Lamont from Yakuza are definitely in a number of different bands. Some bands that at least one of those two are in: Minsk, Circle of Animals (Old Wax Trax style band with one of the dudes from the revolting cocks), Bloodiest, Buried at Sea, and now Nachtmystium.

Other than that though, there's actually a pretty solid scene around here, again Sanford Parker has his hand in a decent amount of these bands as well on the production side. But some bands that are definitely worthwile around here just off the top of my head: Black September, Indian, Bible of the Devil, Anatomy of a Habit, Chicago Thrash Ensemble.

Also you have the more well known bands like Lair of the Minotaur, Lord Mantis, Pelican, and Weekend Nachos. There's also a plethora of sub par death metal coming out of the south side that's not really worth mentioning.

Yeah, also from Chicago. That's another band that Chris Black is in, he plays drums with them. Didn't know they had anything new coming out though, will have to check it for sure.

If you're a fan of Dawnbringer and Pharoah I'm thinking you'd probably enjoy High Spirits, though I could see you thinking it's a little derivative/generic, I personally think it's a fun album to just kick back and have a few beers to. But Chris Black's vocals are definitely not seeing Aymar's even on his best day for sure.

There's a new Pharaoh track up on the Cruz Del Sur facebook page, it looks like the EP is out, which has some covers and rarities I think, and an album is expected in the fall.
