Nirvana - Nevermind

or

Pearl Jam - Ten

So Ive been discussing this with some friends of mind over the past week and wondered what the :phila: thinks.

Which album do you feel has aged better?

That is, is one a more enjoyable listen in 2011?

x2

it's not necessarily the better album, might not be the better album at all, but it sticks in your head for far longer

i forgot which particular write up he does it in, but klosterman sums up never mind really well by describing it as more 'important' than actually enjoyable in the long term

Ten for me.

Love both albums but Ten just seems to have aged better for me personally.

Basically, Im more compelled to pick Ten back up as time passes.

Really love Vedder's singing throughout and feel the songs work together well as an album.

When I was a kid, I would have said Nevermind. Now that I am an adult with a respectable knowledge of music... Ten all day. Ten is an excellent LP and will be forever. Nevermind is something one realizes is over rated and uninformed as they learn more.

Read yesterday that its actually a reference to Mookie Blaylock, who the band was originally named after.

A buddy of mine put on Ten in the car when we were on our way to wisconsin a few months back. At first I thought WXRT was in the middle of a pearl jam rock block or something, and I was enjoying the shit out of it. Then I realized he'd put the album on and I proceeded to rock out through the rest. CSB

If it had been 3 songs off Nevermind in a row I probably would have asked him to change the channel. I think I appreciate Nirvana more than I actually like to listen to them, and with Pearl Jam it's the opposite. If that makes sense.

i only really like the first two pearl jam albums, and maybe 2 tracks off of vitalogy, but pearl jam was HUGE for me growing up. lots of nostalgia, and ten is a pretty fantastic album still, i think. i like nirvana a lot, but im going with ten.

besides, "state of love and trust" (though it's not on the album, it's from the same time period) is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Can anyone shed any light on the truth or falsehood of this statement?
Regarding the critical reception of Ten... Wikipedia wrote:Nirvana's Kurt Cobain angrily attacked Pearl Jam, claiming the band were commercial sellouts, and argued Ten was not a true alternative album because it had so many prominent guitar leads.
Id never heard that before reading the wiki page on it.

Anyways for me it Nevermind.

Like I said in the Nirvana/GNR thread, at least Kurt was smart enough to kill himself while he was on top. Ten is a very good album but ruined for me by their quick decent into dad/arena rock territory and the fratboy fanbase.

Nevermind isn't my favorite Nirvana album but I'd still take it over anything by PJ.

Can't listen to Pearl Jam anymore. I listen to Nirvana unplugged quite a bit and Nevermind once in a blue moon.

Pretty much, and Jeremy is even worse. Pearl Jam are probably the most despicable band of that era; earnest warbling MOR faggots with a bassist with a penchant for stupid hats.

For those who've sited Vedder's voice as making Ten unlistenable, I would ask, do you enjoy Cobain's vocal performance on Nevermind?

If so, what about it in particular makes it enjoyable for you?

Never gave a shit about pearl Jam, Vedder was unacceptable to me.. Obviously Nirvana would be my pick.

And yeah, I like Cobains singing infinitely more than Vedder's. Vedder spawned all kinds of shitty college rock. I guess Pearl Jam is just way softer to me, and at that time I was into punk and metal and harder rock bands... At least Nirvana spawned louder and more agressive bands than themselves to some degree (as well as their share of awfulness as well).
