i know that... I'm talking about his specific role, because most of what I know about public enemy (a fair bit) involves chuck d. My question is what did Flava Flav contribute?

He was pretty notable as a non-faggot. Follow suit.

^ Comic relief... PE never would've been as successful without Flav.

^Exactly...Chuck D was the serious/conscious MC who most people would not have really taken notice of if Flav wasn't in the group, he was an entertainer and bought a fun element to Public Enemy and had all kinds of crazy rhymes, laughs and sayings "yeahhhhhhh boyeeeeeeee", "cold lampin" etc...while this was happening kids were memorizing the great rhymes of Chuck D and the messages.

Chuck and him worked, and to be honest I don't think anyone else could have pulled off what they did these days.

Flava Flav may sadly be a parody of his former himself these days (his solo album was painful to hear), but in my eyes and ears I will always remember him for his zany antics and the most ironic fact that while Chuck was rhyming hard (the hard rhymer) and taking a stance against the crack epidemic, Flav was out of tree high as hell on the crack rock.
