In the early 90s heyday of NYC underground, few emcees could ever claim to have reached the status of Godfather Don. Already having debuted in 1991 with his Select Records LP ג€œHazardousג€, Don became a legendary fixture in 1993 after he started collaborating with The Ultramagnetic MCג€™s and most specifically, Kool Keith. Gaining worldwide notoriety by producing and guest appearing on the ג€œRaise It Upג€ single off of Ultraג€™s ג€œFour Horsemenג€ LP, Don and Kool Keith soon combined to form a unique, creative project called The Cenubites. They recorded dozens of demos and promos and appeared frequently on the Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito show to rhyme, play tracks, and co-host. While Don was enjoying this mid-Nineties reemergence as a recording artist, he was also excelling as a producer. Alongside V.I.C. (of Beatnuts fame) he formed The Groove Merchantz, and the duo produced and remixed tracks for the likes of Nas, House Of Pain, Kurious, and others. Around 1995, Godfather Don also started recording a series of 12ג€ records on Queens, NYC indie label, Hydra Records. Tracks like ג€œProperties Of Steelג€ and ג€œPiece Of The Actionג€ continued to cement Godfather Don as one of the great emcee/producers on the underground. These releases culminated in 1998 with the release of Donג€™s second LP ג€œDiaboliqueג€. That album and the 1995 release of The Cenubite project on Bobittoג€™s Fondle Emג€™ label are now extremely rare and both are considered essential to anyone who enjoyed classic underground Hip Hop. Don has put down the mic in recent years, but in response to a growing demand, he has agreed with No Sleep Recordings to finally unearth 17 vintage recordings done during the Cenubite and early Hydra era. Some of these were played at times on the Stretch and Bobitto show and have been sought after by collectors for years. Finally available on CD, these songs are all produced by Don and feature the complex flow and wordplay that made him a fan favorite in the underground. Sure to be as rare as his first two releases, this is underground Hip Hop at itג€™s finestג€¦
Just came across this at UGHH. First I've heard of it, and needless to say I'm pretty stoked. I know there's some big Don fans here, so I thought others might be interested. Here's the link: http://www.undergroundhiphop.com/store/ ... C=NSR002CD.

"Forever" is my favorite Godfather Don track. Kevin Beacham played it on his "Time Travel" show back in the late 90s, and I've been wondering where the hell it came from ever since.

Yeah there's no way I'm supporting this after his manager threatened to send Machine Men after me.

Tried to interview Scaramanga and Godfather Don for a project I'm working on, which will probably just be a series of blog post interviews. It had a specific theme, but I'll keep that under wraps for now in case I actually decided to go through with it as a series, I'd rather they be kind of a surprise. Anyway I contacted their manager and told him I was interested in interviewing Scaramanga, he said the price was $5000. I told him that was absurd. He told me it was absurd thinking I could build my reputation off of a project based off their blood, sweat, and tears. I told him it was good publicity and would bring attention to his artists, and that if he couldn't understand that concept he wasn't a very good manager. He prank called me for two weeks talkin' about "What ya gwan talk shit 'bout Sun Large rekkids for?" and hit my myspace up talkin' about "Oh you live in Queens? I'll have machine men there in twenty minutes."

Funny shit is much bigger names usually jump at any opportunity. No such thing as bad publicity. But maybe this guy is more of the thug/goon manager than the media savvy nerdy type.

I doubt THAT is the reason. It's a good one and sound believable but Don never made coin selling his music. Hydra or Fondle Em wasn't padding his 401K. He made niche music for underground kids like us who dug that whole abstract shit like Ultra. All the diggers in Japan couldn't have possibly made this dude wealthy. He probably has a real 9-5 job and knew he wasn't a marketable cat who could make a living off of the music.

like i said (and Don himself) not the ONLY reason, but one of THE BIGGEST.

Excellent.

Is this being put out by Don himself? Be great to have nice quality versions of some of these tracks. I'll be buying this most definitely.
