Short Careers Phase 3: Singles Only '93-'02

Post by kevin beacham »

I've been working on this for a few years on my Redefinition Radio show. It's a 4 part series:

Phase One: Artists who only had one album (+guest spots)
Phase Two: Singles Only (+guest spots) '86-'92
Phase Three: Singles Only (+guest spots) '93-'02
Phase Four: Guest Appearances Only

This one got a lil difficult because it takes place in the age of the CDR and the "new mix cd" so the concept of album got a lil blurred. Plus some may have had a very limited regional album (ex: silent lambs project). EPs were tricky too. Some had an album but many years after they debut or prime (ex: Erule) or after passing away (Charizma).

Anyway, I tried my best to keep it accurate and find the best ones to represent the theme. I'll be covering Phase 3 on my show starting this saturday (4 week special). Check out the list and let me know some of your favorites. Plus feel free to make any corrections or add any omissions. You can peep the show + all archives (including Phase One and Two) here:

http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/ ... ion_radio/

Here's the list (I originally planned to type everyones discog but it got
to be a lil much so I abandoned that...ha.

Lay Tight was '96 I think. Would LOVE to hear that sampler.

I have a mediocre sounding dub of an Arrogant track with Ras Kass, Vooodu and Saafir, think it's titled W.E.S.T. or something, dope as fuck.

Would love to up it but I can't rip cassettes at the moment...

Karmis-Laugh At U b/w Joox '96

Karmis is the label, the artist is "Da Hurricane Holla Macwell", he was on the All Men Are Dogs RMX.

Interesting shit, some things on there I wasn't aware of either, like the Elemental Mixture track from Mixed Elements...

I'm a little confused. Are you saying that these artists only released singles and the ones listed are their most note worthy? Because there's definitely people up there that released more than what's listed.
Not dissing, there's some great shit on that list.Good work.

Damn, that's dopeness right there. Muchas gracias.

Something else that got mentioned in the list was the Gauge demo. I remember that got reviewed in CITM back in the day. Any chance of hearing that at some point?

ha, Caught In The Middle!! thanx for the plug, that was my baby right there! I actually reviewed that demo. I was just listening to it last week for this special. I'll try to upload it by the weekend. At the time he was managed by Maestro Fresh Wes which was ill because that sparked a friendship between us too and I had been a fan of his work for years.

Was wondering if this is the same Skam on the following two demos that Bobbito played and Blockhead uploaded a while back. And if it is,is he from Canada or Miami?

Scam is from Miami. Peep his verse on The IG Off & Hazardous track "In the Air" where he says, "Miami's finest"...

Thanks, kevin.I'm pretty sure Bobbito says 'here's a demo from Miami' before playing one of those demos, too.

I'll try to upload it by the weekend. At the time he was managed by Maestro Fresh Wes which was ill because that sparked a friendship between us too and I had been a fan of his work for years.
Oh word? That'd be greatly appreciated. CITM was the shit BTW.

no doubt. good looking. Right now in the background we are 3 tracks in deep of this Gauge Demo being transferred....halfway there...ha. It'll be up by tomorrow.

As for CITM, I'm planning to tackle that project next with a CITM blog or myspace page. We basically finished the third issue but never had the money to put it out so Im planning on putting the "lost articles" online. Plus some classic stories, letters, voicemails, all kinds of stuff that I got. That's prob a few months down the line, but there's a the "teaser" promo... :)
