There are lots of different reasons why folks sell their collections.

I've worked in a number of record shops over the years and we'd buy peoples' collections all the time (and clean up in the process - we would frequently score some great records), and the reasons varried from:

* growing up and needing to pay a mortgage.
* getting married and the Wife forcing their husband to get rid of their 'unimportant' shit.
* generally being short of money - as Mad Human said, the recession has hit some people hard.
* favouring mp3s and other digital audio files - nowadays physical formats for music (records, tapes, CDs) are pretty much a dead or dying media. A lot of people don't have a portable CD player anymore. Not to mention the growing popularity of vinyl emmulation programs like Serato.\
* drugs. There was a quite surprisingly high ammount of regular folks selling off their collections in order to pay for a pathetic drug addiction.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if he sold it for 4 and a half grand. He must be kicking himself that he didn't do this a few years ago when the market for OOP rap CDs was at its peak.

Vinyl, maybe. CD, I reckon he'll have to knock 50% off that price at least.

I'd take that Silver Bullet album off his hands though.

I think out of the list you can find the stuff you REALLY want and get them on Half.com for about 70% less.

Aside from money issues etc...there is the possibility that he got bored with Hip Hop and has had his time with it, I have known a few people like that over the years.

I'm considering it. I have a collection that's close to 1000 and while I know there are CD's I would never get rid of, I could see myself selling a large portion of them.

I don't know if I should go with eBay or Discogs to sell them though.

ago to pay my electric bill.

I would not sell anything but you never know it could happen to any one of us where we lose are jobs and have to sell somethings that we do not want to. It would take for me to be in the streets to sell my collection.

I see he never shifted them. As I said, he was about 4 years too late with this.

This is a pretty big one, and not hard to believe.
A good amount of people that are deep into music are also deep into drugs.

Nowadays, this is probably one of the few ways to get full dope collections
of old rap vinyl for cheap.

Or sometimes dudes still live with their parents, get kicked out or
incarcerated, and the collection goes.

Like I've said before, I lost a pretty gem laced collection I left in Arizona,
due to my former buddy's crack/heroin addiction.
Somewhere in a pawn shop in Tucson lays about 3-4 crates of gems from
the Centa Of The Web green EP to the Parallax Bleeding Hate vinyl to The
Kismet EP.
And in another, or the same pawn shop, lies my entire cassette collection,
from about 93 or 94 to early 98. Full Bobbito shows. Hank Love and Half
Pint shows, Awesome Two shows, WNYU shows. Mad demos, promos.
Plus any and all official cassettes like the Purple tape.

Anyone live out there finds them, please at least share some of the
goodies here.

And I had already previously lost my mostly cassette collection from the
late 80's to about 92 to my wack job former step mother's crack addiction.
Fuckin cunt. There was lots of Red Alert shows and official cassettes.

So, yeah, drugs can be a huge reason for lost collections.

I'm wouldn't part with my collection because, in the event of a nuclear holocaust, I need to make sure my children have the Project Pat discography.

i think discogs is generally better as they only charge you once the item has sold and you can have it it listed on there as long as you want, plus all the info & label scan has been entered already.

less rare/collectable stuff is probably better sold as a bundle on ebay though.
