Demo Battle part 2

Post by aleph »

Back by semi-popular demand!

Itג€™s been a while since Iג€™ve gone thru my own tapes. These two demos feature cats who gained fame later on. They werenג€™t part of any real competition but I thought Iג€™d pair them up since theyג€™re both from roughly the same period. Also, it's a more interesting way to put these out there without resorting to the Demos/Rarities thread again.

Demo #1
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/sh ... on=8,0,0,0" width="335" height="28" id="divplaylist"><param name="movie" value="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist? ... 250626-ffb" /><embed src="http://www.divshare.com/flash/playlist? ... 250626-ffb" width="335" height="28" name="divplaylist" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashpl ... d></object>
Big Ill The Mack- ג€œGet Paidג€
http://www.divshare.com/download/12250626-ffb

This is from a Stretch show from 93. Heג€™s in his hardcore phase, sandwiched between his stint in the group W.I.Z.E.Guyz and Ill Al Skratch. Also around the same period where he dissed Kane at his own b-day party.

Demo #2

Renaissance- Shine The Spotlight
http://www.divshare.com/download/12250590-af4

I recorded this one from WNYU (Mayhem?) in 94. Heads should recognize the second emcee, who got some shine years later as an associate of Little Brother.

Who takes it?

Nice post man! This is a tough one, but I think I'm gonna go with Renaissance "Shine The Spotlight"

Who is that 2nd emcee who you said was later affiliated with Little Brother?

Oh shit! I totally remember that "shine the spotlight" joint. I had it on cassette forever and could never fine it. Good looks on the upload.

Spectac. Halftime Show gave him some spin here with "Say Mama" and "When I Rock" back in the earlier part of this decade.

Did W.I.Z.E.Guyz released anythin'? And what's the story behind that diss?

Renaissance for me. "Say Mama" was a dope track but the version that got played on Halftime Show never came out. I hit Spectac up some time ago and he was kind enough to send me the unreleased "Say Mama" mixes. A good guy. If any one wants em hit me up.

Just a single and LP. Here's the LP, titled "eF yoU eN Kay E" (1989). It's missing an intro and interlude.

W.I.S.E. Guyz- Big Ill (The Mack)

As for the dis, I never heard that there was any particular beef between Kane and Big Ill. I always assumed that Ill was a young turk wanting to make his mark by taking on a legend and at that time Kane was an easy target. (If anyone knows if there was an actual beef, pls educate)

Beginning at around 1990, Kane noticeably started changing his image from an emceeג€™s emcee to a lover man. For those that remember, he started modeling himself after Prince (by wearing purple) and Barry White. Even his so-called battle rhymes became increasingly corny (ex. ג€œI could fart on a record and make it sound goodג€) and his fans knew it. (Iג€™m not even gonna go into Playgirl and Madonna.) One can say it was a dis rhyme waiting to happen and Kane was wearing the ג€œkick meג€ sign.

For those who haven't heard it, here's the entire Kane b-day bash feat. a host of emcees with an obviously hungry Big Ill rhyming on the last two minutes. http://www.mediafire.com/?4mcc87gxbz832pe

A couple of the cats from W.I.S.E. Guyz were part of Ten Thieves. Not sure which ones though.

W.I.S.E. Guyz- Big Ill (The Mack)

Oh, yeah I saw that album but the front cover was lookin' mad corny so I'd never bothered checkin' it out... Lol, I just checked discogs and it says that Big Ill was a member... I would never thought that it is the same Big Ill if you haven't told me... He switched his style 180

Voting option added.
Great post, aleph! I gotta really give both these songs a fair listen and I'll come back to vote. I'm also a sucker for the Montara sample, especially when it's older like this.

Upon further deliberations, I'm gonna go with Big Ill the Mack. That hook really pushed it to get my vote when I was undecided.

Wow, I didn't think we'd have a clear winner here but we do. Personally I prefer Big Ill but not by much.
