1991-Ice-T-O.G. vs NWA-Efil4zaggin

Post by Jaz »

West Coast Classics that both featured really dope production and hard hitting rhymes and 2 albums that both did really well on the charts back in 1991...but which was one the better album?

Ice-T's 4th (and in my opinion best ever) album...

Ice T easily for me. I loved 'Power' and 'Iceberg' and 'OG' was better than both of them. 'New Jack Hustler', 'Mind Of Matter' and 'Bitches 2' are probably my favourite songs on there.
NWA's one I was a bit disappointed with. Theres some good tracks on there but I thought they were trying a bit too hard with the shock value (a bit like Ice ended up doing on parts of 'Home Invasion'). They definitely missed Cube and there was too much gimmicky shit like 'Automobile' and 'Rather Fuck You'. If they'd have used 100 Miles & Runnin and Sa Prize on the album instead of a seperate EP it couldve been great.
Day Of Wayback, Alwayz Into Somethin and Appetite For Destruction still get play though.

efil4zaggin is one of the best produced hip hop albums ever, especially to ride around too.

like someone here said, evil4zaggin is superbly produced album, but it's missing one important thing - ice cube. o.g. is not my favorite ice-t record. iceberg is way better for me. but o.g is his most complete one, and if u add a fact that he made og home video with music video for every single song on the record, u gotta admit that's something special.
so my verdict would be - OG

Listening to both last night and I think O.G. was a just a more cohesive album.

O.G. has great production all the way through as well, EFil does too but falters a bit in some aspects and I'd rather a listen to a full album of Ice-T rhymes than Dre rhymes, I have never considered Dre a good MC to be honest.

But NWA had the better album.

cicarista...you think "Iceberg..." is a better album than "Power"?

As much as I like O.G., I can't deny the production effort, cinematic feel, lyrical contributions and social impact of Niggaz4Life. Aside from the superb way that NWA album was put together and flows flawlessly from track to track, it's the lasting power of their persona as a group that hit hard back then and still exists to a degree where I'm from. They defined the ghetto through music like none other and Dre did it again on The Chronic. It depends on where you're from to understand that social significance of Niggaz4Life aside from the music itself.

^Oh yeah, those two songs are kinda wack to me also, lol. Other than that Niggaz4Life remains one of my all time favorites. I like the Bootsy Collins song used for I'd Rather Fuck You a lot.

Thinking back to O.G., the album represented the hood very well for it's time too. Ice-T took no prisoners on the mic and a song like New Jack Hustler was basically an anthem for the ghetto, especially for my neighborhood of Harlem

I always liked how Dre used this song for Dayz of Wayback.

NWA>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I used to like some of Ice-T's shit , and OG is a really well produced album, but Ice's music didn't age well. And , even back then, it was a no contest.

Going with NWA here. I grew up on that group! I never ever really enjoyed Ice T much.

Agreed...tho I voted NWA it's not like Ice was a bum. Power is my fave album followed by OG and then The Iceberg. Dude had a lot of bangers too in his day.....New Jack Hustler and my all time Ice fave Ricochet come to mind immediately.

Ice T is no comparison on any level. And Power is his best album.

I voted Ice-T. He wasn't nearly as good as a rapper as say MC Ren but he had a lot more to say, substance wise. And DJ Alladin really did an excellent job on this, maybe not as technically good as Dr Dre's production (I mean what is) but O.G. is something I can still play as an adult. The nihilism of NWA gets annoying and old quickly.

yeah, although I've noticed over the last few years its not particularly fashionable to name drop him and others rapper rarely cite him as an influence. Kind of like Schooly D I guess.

Im also wondering if he was more popular in Europe than in the US? He toured over here alot from what I remember.

- It was a close call, but I voted for Ice-T OG. It was his best album and there was not a bad song on there.

- Dre's/Yella's production on STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON was raw, but their production on NIGGAZ4LIFE was way more polished and darker.

I remember when NIGGAZ4LIFE came out back in '91, I bought the vinyl version. A friend of mine (who bought the CD) asked me what I thought about A Message To Benedict Arnold. I answered "What the hell are you talking about. That's not on my album." He lent me his CD and then I noticed my vinyl copy did not include these 3 tracks: Prelude, Message To B.A. , and Real Niggaz. I wondered why did they put Real Niggaz on there since it was already on the 100 Miles And Runnin EP.

I guess they had to take off tracks so it all fitted on the record...there have been a few other instances where some key tracks have been left off vinyl records.

I guess "Real Niggaz" was on there as it fitted with the rest of the album?

Real Niggaz should not have been on there especially since there was already a song on the album called Real Niggaz Don't Die

I think that NWA managed to accomplish the sound of Compton streets with the "Straight Outta Compton" album, but let's face it...after Cube's departure they didn't have that same substance again.
I think back in '91 Ice-T captured way much better what was goin' down in South Central than the world's most dangerous group,I mean...alongside Gang Starr's Hard To Earn Intro,Home of The Body Bag must be one of the realest, hardest, rawest intros I've ever heard...it instantly takes you in the jungle creed, and I think that's important. So I'll go with OG on this one,If it was Straight Outta Compton I'd start second guessin',that album was truly groundbreaking.

niggaz4life has way better production but the rapping on there doesn't do much for me. killing fields, the tower, bitches 2, straight up nigga.... shit even the song with body count.. this guy has something to say. put OG on after a dre produced album at a party it's not gonna knock, but when you're paying attention OG kills niggas for life.
1. Nas
2. Drake

that's pretty much it fam.
