Fave Hieroglyphics release from the 90s'?

Post by Jaz »

Image

The Oakland Hip Hop collective were founded in the early 1990's by Del Tha Funkee Homosapien and Pep Love and consisted of Souls Of Mischief (Tajai, Phesto, Opio, A-Plus), Casual, Extra Prolific (Mike G & Snupe) Pep Love & Jay-Biz (The Prose), DJ Toure and producer and manager Domino and Kwam (Del's ex manager).

Their first official recording as the group was 1991's "Burnt" found on the B-Side of Dels "Mistadobalina"... the crew were listed as The Hyrogliphics..."Burnt" was later sampled by NYC Hip Hop group Babbletron.

Throughout the 90's the crew released a series of classic singles (including SOM's timeless Billy Cobham sampling "93' Til Infinity") and essential albums, but which album in your opinion was the best one?*

*I am just including the officially released albums in this poll and not the unreleased (Casual-Meanwhile, The Prose, Extra Prolific-Masterpiece, Del-Future Development etc) or compilation albums (Heiro Oldies etc)

At the time, the Souls Of Mischief album blew me away. I loved it. As I said in another thread, I just think that Casual album aged so well. Maybe it benefited from not being played to death, I dunno.

Casual.

word Yak.

for me it's a very hard decision between...

Souls of Mischief-93 Til Infinity (1993)
Del No Need For Alarm (1993)
Casual-Fear Itself (1994)
Extra Prolific-Like It Should Be (1994)

I feel like "I Wish My Brother George Was Here" is technically not a Hiero album.

Undert that assumption, Fear Itself

thinking about this for the first time i guess i agree with you. and that would move del from the top spot to one of the last spots for me cuase i could never really get into no need for alarm. production was weak compared to his first album and all the other hiero releases

93 till for me.

I agree with Thun with regards to IWMBGWH.

Del's first Heiro sounding song was the B-side Eye Examination that did not appear on that album.

what about "Burnt" which I mentioned in the post?

IWMBGWH is a Hiero album to me, Del founded the crew and that was his first album and there were members doing background vocals too.

You don't have to consider it a Hiero album though that is essentially up to you.

Props to those that are voting and discussing.

That information could be wrong though Crash but I also remember seeing a Rap Pages interview where they mentioned The Prose.

My favourite is Del's "Future development" 1996 LP, which is not included on the list...Casuals "Fear itself" was the one that i disliked the most.

No I don't think it's better. I would say 93' might be 1B to Casual, however this is my list of favorites.

it's not on the list because it wasn't officially released in the 90's.

No, that ain't true. There was a cassette release of FD on Hiero Records back in '96 or '97, along with a couple of demo/B-sides/remix compilations.

Upon release, 93 Til Infinity was my favorite.

Since the release of Like It Should Be, I've definitely played it more than any of the other releases from that era.

Fear Itself gets a lot of burn too.

Slightly off topic:

Can someone please school me on how the following play into the Hiero history/legacy:

Extra Prolific
The Prose
J-Biz

Thanks in advance for any info.

if it was released on Elektra like it was supposed to be then it would have been an official release, I stated on the thread that I wasn't including the unreleased albums and the compilations.

Didn't Souls of Mischief release 'Focus' in the 90s? Was one of my first internet purchases I think... Pretty sure it was in 1999.

So why did Snupe leave EP and Hiero? Why did Mike G eventually leave? Why did Pep and Jay-Biz drop the Prose moniker?

Thats more or less what Im getting at. Sorry for not clarifying that in my og post.

Also, Toure? as in the journalist dude?

Snupe got kicked out. Dunno why Mike G left, and I don't know why Pep went solo.

There's various stories about why Snupe got kicked out. One of em is that he slept with Casual's underage sister. Another is he ran up in the Jive offices and made a scene causing SoM to lose their record deal. Dunno if any of these stories are actually true tho, but I do know that Snupe was kicked out.

The story about Cas' sister is definitely true.

I believe Snupe went off on Jive executives at the release party for the Low Down Dirty Shame soundtrack. Extra Prolific and Casual were reportedly dropped from Jive shortly afterwards.

Souls were dropped later, probably due to the lackluster performance of No Man's Land.
