What other weird stuff was there in the '90s? I remember a few mp3s from Rakim's The Master that were even worse than the final versions. One with Ini Kamoze. I had someone burn a CD with that and some other loose mp3s for me.

Too bad I didn't have a newer computer or CD burner in those days. I'd still have the original I Am mp3s and such if that were the case, as well as those aesoprock ones I am still confident that I have a full cassette with the original I Am advance mp3s, probably at my parents'
If you could rip that KMD tape, that would be sweet! Those Aesop Rock ones would be cool to check out too. As for Rakim, didn't care for The Master so I never paid attention to the alternate versions and stuff. Ini Kamoze? Glad he hot-stepped his way out.

I own the white label of ini with the interludes but it is incomplete. I did however receive the official version from a guy from mount vernon who was close w the group. Its a side a side b rip. proper sequencing and all the tracks and interludes. Only 160kbps but decent enough. Check out claaa7's lost tapes blog. I gave him a copy to share. And he does a dope write up

here's the rakim you mentioned :) rakim-tracks_from_untitled_forthcoming_album-rns

From the nfo:

º º º Another HOT release from RNS! º º º
º º º º º º
º º º Before the magazines, before the trade journals, before the º º º
º º º websites -- RNS proudly brings to you 8 tracks from Rakim's º º º
º º º forthcoming as-yet-untitled album. These tracks were ripped º º º
º º º from DAT, and are unmastered (but mixed down). I just want º º º
º º º to say that these tracks serve as proof that even the most º º º
º º º talented emcee can come off as incredible weak when backed º º º
º º º with weak production. Hopefully, the rest of the album will º º º
º º º improve on these tracks. º º º
º º º º º º
º º º On another note, whoever decided to pair Ini Kamoze and º º º
º º º Rakim together should be fucking shot

Enjoy!

The kid that wrote this NFO should also get shot for calling "It's like that" a weak track. In retrospect, all these beats were far from being lame, but maybe not what listeners expected from Rakim at the time.

Do you mean there's a decent rip out there for this one? The ones I found were awful.

I'm talking about the TAPE RIP by CMS. Quality is OK / not bad. The Crustified Dibbs TAPE RIP IS HORRIBLE.

Yes, same scenario everytime lol. Came across a few people claiming to own this CD, but no one has been able to provide proofs. In my book, they're called liars.

Oh my god, that would be such an incredible album to get a decent rip of! I saw a different rip that was better quality, but it wasn't complete and some of the tracks seemed edited. I'm surprised R.A. never bothered to just post a version himself. I'm sure Jive isn't going to come after him for it.

After reading the interviews with Dante Ross and everyone else about Black Bastards, I guess the real question is why Doom never invested in a proper mastering for the full album? The singles and the ruffs and rares EP both sound light-years ahead of the CD. If he's got the rights, what's his excuse?

this was the best one around for a while. Vaporized from here tried to fix it up as much as he could. from what i remember it was waaay better than what was previously around but i haven't listened to it for years.

The Vaporized version of Dibbs definitely sounds better, though I hate the idea of trying to remaster something from a terrible source. Once again, this is an example of someone owning the original masters, or at least a far superior copy to what leaked, but not making it available to the audience that wants it. There are two tracks from the album in perfect quality on an R.A. comp, Every Record Label Sucks Dick and Cunt Renaissance with BIG, so I'm assuming he's got superior copies of everything else too. The only question is whether he owns the masters or not. If he doesn't, how hard would it be to buy them back?

Maybe RA doesn't really want that shit heard. Just playing devil's advocate.

That could very well be. Funny to think that would be the case, but you never know. Still, that is a damn fine album, but I guess you might have to make certain your tongue is firmly in cheek to appreciate it. Every Record Label Sucks Dick and it's accompanying skit alone probably sealed that record's fate, and it might be one of the easier tracks for someone to relate to.

On a quick side note, thinking about R.A. and that track makes me think of 3rd Bass before their first record came out, selling advance copies of the Slick Rick album and responding to Slayer fan mail directed to Def Jam's offices so they could scheme on some cash.
