Defend Batman Returns...

Post by battlecatmeowstab212 »

I'm seeing this jocked pretty hard in the Dark Knight thread, and I want to understand why so many of you have a hoopla boner for it.

...for reasons other than how awesome the Sega-CD game was of course.

worn out the VHS from dozens of viewing as a kid. Haven't seen it in several years though. What's bad about it?

a more appropriate approach would be for you to defend your dislike, considering you're by far in the minority here

easily the 2nd best batman movie ever behind the Dark Knight. I don't think the Dark Knight is significantly better but it is better.

The Gotham landscape in the winter time is beautiful to me.
Pfeiffer as Catwoman was awesome.
Devito as the Penguin was great.
Walken played a great vile business man.
i thought the story was great.
Keaton was very good.

there are other things that citizen brought up (he mentioned the score which is always the case with Burton imo).

I mean, what is there not to like?

burtons gotham was very interesting, kind of dense and chlostrophobic at times, there were times in dark knight where it looked like michael mann was directing with all the sprawling shots of the city, i like both looks, but yeah gotham in winter in returns was nice

Devito was a great Penguin. I didn't expect his performance to be as good, or for the character to be lent as much credibility as it was. The story is really good, too. There was a lot of good character development in the movie that few other movies--comic book-based or not--accomplish.

I haven't seen DK yet, but to my mind the best depiction of Gotham was in Returns (like citizen mentioned above), which actually took heed of the city name and made it look gothic in the best sense of the word. Not too far behind was the version shown in the animated series, which seemed to take inspiration from old Eisner comics and german expressionism - a lot of the cityscapes had that distinct skewed and heavily shadowed quality about them that had M and Caligary written all over it.

This scene. It's insane that one of the hottest scenes of all time is in a comic book movie:

Creation of Catwoman scene is awesome too. Walken is God.

I agree with Poppabitch. It was a more darker, brooding, bleak but exciting vision of Gotham directed by Tim Burton.

that's why im such a fan of burton's batman and chris nolan's new movies because they ARE darker and not mad corny like most of the others.

good flick.

might be the second best batman movie behind burton's original.

it's a coin flip between batman returns and batman begins for me. (no harvey)

THE WAY THE CATS LICKED HER BACK TO LIFE WAS SO PHILOSOPHICAL AND DARK.....I LIKE THE WAY BATMAN COULD HARDLY EVEN MOVE IN HIS SUIT.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgHTRNJl ... re=related

I'm just messing with Ice. In reality this movie kicks so much ass it hurts, danny devito biting the nose and then catwoman eating the bird...Pheiffer's performance is downright amazing, her transformation from Selena Kyle to Catwoman is fucking bonkers....She deserves mad props for that transition, since this thread is basically about the dark knight, it could be pointed out that Ledger didn't have to really have that deep of a character....

The Batmobile is better than the stupid bat tank

-Putting a bomb on the fat guy
-Walken tossing Pfeiffert out the window
-Gotham looked like a real comic book city instead of Chicago-Lite
-Keatons Bruce Wayne was great
-Devito brought life to the Penguin character that nobody else could've pulled off.
-Catwoman was everything catwoman was supposed to be
-No ugly girl love interest for Bruce Wayne
-Burton really knows how to capture visually the comic book experience theatrically.

Michelle Pfeiffer was the sexiest Catwoman ever.

Here is the bittorrent link for Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robit and Batman Begins.

But Lee Merriwether's Catwoman was right up there with her.

While not a bad movie, I just don't think it's the best. It's definitely a great film though.

I agree.

To be honest, I don't dislike the film. I loved the DP work and enjoyed everything everyone's mentioned. I've just never heard it praised as much as it was in "The Dark Knight" thread. When I revisited it two years ago, I found it to be a dope movie but found the oversexualization of it all a bit corny. Then again, that's a relatively minor complaint considering all the awesome aspects of it that this thread has helped me put in perspective.

I'm going to rewatch this soon. Thread = success.

The Dark Knight was simple and effective in comparison to what Tim Burton did. Don't get me wrong.....Burton definitely hooked up the movies he did. But, this shit.....showed a side of the whole Batman series alot of people haven't seen. People know The Joker for being funny and the villian but the not out of wack, brilliant psycho for example.
