Round 1: Zodiac vs. Catch Me If You Can

Post by Icesickle »

Pursuing a serial killer or a con man in films that seem like they're never going to end, but are great despite it? Downey or Walken in excellent supporting roles?

Zodiac is awesome. Catch Me If You Can was made with homosexuals in mind.

Voted Catch Me If You Can as a sympathy vote cause I thought it was gonna get thwacked, but I'm pleasantly suprised it's holding it's own.

Two movies on opposite sides of the spectrum. A cold, meticulously calculated procedural about the impending information age vs. a sprawling humanistic investigation into identity in the face of the breakdown of the American family. Both would make my top 15 of the decade. If I had a gun to my head and had to choose I'd probably pick Zodiac, but Catch Me If You Can is great in its own right. The opening credits are a feat unto themselves.

Zodiac - A definite top 5 of 2007 movie. The stabbing death in the park was horrifying realistic and brutal. It's just a well-crafted film with some suspenseful scenes. Loved the stare down at the end.

Catch Me If You Can - It didn't leave a big impression on me. I just remember it being disposable, but well done entertainment.

That's why the vote's only 14 to 13 right? I must have 12 fake accounts.

If you don't respect the filmmaking in CMIYC I don't know what to tell you... Great performances by Walken, Hanks, and DiCaprio. Captivating story on the surface but also goes deeper and addresses the breakdown of the American family due to divorce, a previously taboo practice that started to gain a lot of traction during that period. The opening credits are more impressive than most movies.

I'm betting Saul Bass would have been livid though.

Love both of these.

Went with Zodiac cuz there's nothing like a good crime-story. It does not have the corny moments of CMIYC either.
Whether to Jason of Philaflava or John Podesta, I will speak my fucking perspective openly

CMIYC was a decent movie, but I'll take Zodiac every single time.

Catch Me is getting unfairly shitted on, it doesn't have the depth of some of the other movies in the tournament but as pure entertainment it's extremely well executed. Zodiac is better, but still..

I'm going to have to disagree with you on it not having depth. See my comments about how it addresses the fracturing of the conventional American family and identity issues. Spielberg is a master of making entertaining movies that have a lot of depth, but because they're so entertaining and he doesn't hit you over the head with his points people sometimes write them off as strictly pop entertainment.

If Spielberg's parents didn't have marital problems he would have absolutely nothing to say. It's the only depth anyone can force on his films.

Absolutely right. I watched that shitty remake that he did of War Of The Worlds last night and he still managed to squeeze that whole dysfunctional family steez he loves so much even into this movie.

War of the Worlds is a good example of what I was talking about with its allusions to 9/11 and how the country dealt with its aftermath.
