All the molemen, straight edge skinheads and deepfriedbiafras I couldnt really relate to, but the high school experience, fat chicks and this wolf dick, man, that shit hit home, maybe.

I've read a lot this summer...

Non Fiction
Born to Run-can't think of authors name-Highly Recommended
It's not about the Bike-Lance Armstrong (only good if you are into endurance racing and cancer beating)
Mr. Rogers and Me-can't remember author- Mr rogers was a fucking saint
Chi Running-don't know author- only good if you like running
Love and Respect-My wife made me read it

fiction
Matterhorn-a book about vietnam, I wasn't a big fan, but it was good
Virgil and Beatrice- I enjoyed it, although I understand the hate it is getting
Basketball Diaries- I don't know why I always come back to this, I've read it like 6 times
The Firm-another one I always come back to.

I love traveling and having to time to read.....

Gibson is ill. I recommend

I also read his latest, Spook Country, and his collaboration with Bruce Sterling, The Difference Engine. Spook Country takes place in modern times, but still has a bit of the same vibe as Gibson's cyberpunk shit, whereas The Difference Engine is much more dense and takes place in an alternate version of 1855. TDE can drag at times and I wouldn't recommend it unless you're really big on history, alternate history, or steampunk.

Definitely check out Virtual Light though. Another author you might like if you're into Neuromancer is John Shirley. He and Gibson are old chums and their first books (Gibson's Neuromancer & Shirley's Transmaniacon) are some of the seminal cyberpunk novels.

if you like the world he creates here def try the next two in the trilogy, count zero and mona lisa overdrive. there are a few short stories that fall in this setting too, most notably Johnny motherfucking Mnemonic

thanks, will read virtual light, a john shirley book and the rest of the neuromancer trilogy in the near future (didn't even know there was a trilogy), probably johhny mnemonic too

i am also reading this:

my first straight fantasy book, sort of inconsistent so far but solid enough that i have faith in it. not a huge fan of ye olde english/super nerd type vocabulary and references, dialogue etc. but it is used sparingly and the main character and universe are compelling enough that i want to read more

ive only listened to the "consider the lobster" audiobook and read a handful of his essays, and that was already enough to become one of my favorites

panic by michael lewis

he picks out articles pre, during and after big economic crashes and events and does a little commentary about each in the beginning of the chapter. the articles/transcripts are very well researched and selected and show a wide range of the crashes implications and interesting parts of each crash

Big time.

Mentioned this on the last page, but if you haven't read the extended David Lynch "profile" in Consider the Lobster, shit is lovely.

unrelated, but finished The Prisoner a couple weeks ago. Good shit.

I'm trying to read The Corrections again (didn't make it very far the first time). I don't know why.

For people who liked Lies My Teacher Told Me,

This is good too (similarly breezy, and a fun, quick read).

IMO the other ones (world history and the civil war one) REALLY suck, though. Definitely just cashing in.

I'm reading Centurion by Simon Scarrow at the moment. Only 20-30 pages in so far and he doesn't mess around - pours the action on early and the opening battle is setting the pace nicely.

Centurion was pretty great. Great depictions of combat throughout and the battles are pretty epic. No real surprises but a "manly" read that should please those who are fans of series like Rome and Spartacus, and the Gladiator/300 type movies.

Image

Finally read Freakanomics which was a quick but interesting read - some of it seems common sense but the abortion/crime analysis was pretty convincing, if a tad distasteful. Looking forward to reading SuperFreakanomics n the near future..

Image

Finishing this up at the moment. Pretty straight forward account with lots of little inside tidbits about the battle for each parties nomination and a pretty spot-on depiction/breakdown of the main players in the leadup to the 2008 presidenial election.
