drizzle wrote:conan the barbarian (2012) - This was pretty cool, legitimately, not just in a 'so bad it's good' way. Dumb in many ways and brought absolutely nothing new to the table, but it cycled through the fantasy cliches with a lot of panache and infectious enthusiasm. Tons of blood and nudity, nonstop action that never gets boring, Momoa is perfectly suited to the role and should be in more action movies in general - there is a lot to enjoy here if you accept the movie for what it is. If you're the type who thinks that LOTR and Game Of Thrones are too boring and long winded and prefer 300 and Spartacus instead, this is perfect for you.
Yeah I watched this last night finally and enjoyed it thoroughly. A lot of the action was too quick-cutty for me but Momoa is a bad motherfucker, really hope his stock keeps rising and getting good roles. Pretty cool to see Khal Drogo and Xaro sharing screen time, kept expecting to see the Khaleesi pop up at any second. Tons of violent fun though, sand zombies were a highlight and Rachel Nichols tits yes yes. Entire cast was great (ron fucking perlman) except Rose McGowan who is just a terrible terrible actress. My only real complaint was that Conan didn't punch a single horse in the face. It's a shame this movie bombed as I wish more studios would reboot franchises with a hard R like this and I'd love to see a sequel.

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) - Very decent film by Peckinpah. A bit slow in spots but I guess that was necessary to build up the protagonist and his descent in to craziness. It very much seems like a 70's film to me. Not sure if it would qualify as a roadmovie(?). The scenes at the Mexican church and the shootouts were all very enjoyable, also the breasts of the lady who escorts the anti-hero for most of his journey.

The reason my non-movie buff cousin raves about this joint. One of my favorite Peckinpahs of all time

The Hidden Face (2012) - Excellent film which is not at all dissimilar to other of Spains best recent films, Julia's Eyes and Sleep Tight, though this is superior. A conductor of an orchestra has to deal with the disappearence of his girlfriend. It's guaranteed that you won't see the brilliant twist coming. I'd bet my life that we'll get a remake but it would be dope if this got some due attention on its own merit. It's very hard to pin it down to a genre and doing so would be spoiler, just as the twist is spoiled in the trailer, so avoid that and watch this without any prior knowledge.

Piranha 3DD (2012)

Greatest movie line ever, "Josh cut off his penis because something came out of my vagina." I use the term 'movie' loosely of course as it's just an even trashier and more outrageous follow-up to Aja's magnificent modern grind-house classic.

No, it's shitty and falls apart very early on but worth watching for Katrina Bowden delivering that line alone however.

Another successful screening at the Low Expectations Theater. Payback comparisons are unavoidable, this movie almost feels like an unofficial (slightly more lighthearted) sequel to it, but that's a good thing because Payback rocks. Gibson's unnamed badass is just as capable here as his 'official' Parker facsimile, he's just a little older and a little goofier and has a little more of a sense of humor. The plot doesn't feel that far from a Parker book either - the protagonist is busted with a shitload of money at the Mexican border, gets sent to some crazy prison that's set up as a separate town, has to fight all sorts of gangsters and corrupt cops in that prison town to get his money and bounce. It all goes down smoothly enough, at a good pace, without too many hiccups. There are dumb moments of course, and the movie overplays attempts at quirky noir on a few occasions (the voice over falls flat for example), but not enough to ruin the overall fun. As far as low-stakes action/thrillers go you could do a whole lot worse than this.

Interesting, it's called My Summer Vacation over here. Cool trailer.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Image

This film's premise appealed to me greatly and yet overall I found it a messy disappointment. Sure it tried something different but the whole film just didn't work for me and other than almost short circuiting my brain with all the horror movie references, it felt like an average movie once it ended. Sure Whedon has a lot of creativity with genuinely funny humour and Drew Goddard has a good eye for horror details, but this felt like a glorified late night TV movie to me. I gotta admit I was really disappointed by this.

The Raid (2011)
Image

Some of the most brutal fight choreography I've seen in a long time, not since Donnie Yen going ape shit in Flashpoint to be precise. Enjoyed the film a hell of a lot despite it going into corny territory with the two main leads. It's the ultra violence which I lapped up and put a smile on my face which makes some of it's small flaws entirely forgivable.

Excision (2012) - A story about a weird girl and her problems fitting in in highschool and also her dying sister. It's a horrormovie more or less with some disgusting gags that wouldn't feel out of place in a teencomedy and some gruesome and weird imagery. I thought it kinda sucked but other people seem to like it. I couldn't really relate to the woman and thought she was annoying, which isn't good because the whole movie is about her and not a lot else is happening. Her mother is pornstar Traci Lords and there are some famous faces in the movie for those who might care about such.

Image

Sennentuschi (2010) - A skeleton is found in the Swiss alps and we are initiated in to a bigger story which draws on religion and mythology and how it might mess with our interpretations and impressions of events. The story is plotted very carefully but it's also confusing until the ending, which always draws me a bit away from experiencing a film. A lot of comparison could be drawn to recent films The Woman and Thale but this is clearly a superior work.

Bait (Kimble Rendall, 2012) - Overall a pretty fun Aussie addition to the recent wave of sharksploitation films. Sort of a Jaws meets The Mist mashup, not really as good as either of those films but a solid timewaster in the Sharks in Venice/Sharktopus range. A group of people are inside a lower level grocery store when a tsunami hits the coast and floods the store, trapping them inside with a pair of Great Whites. Lots of plot holes and average CGI but plenty of fun kills and its rather competently directed. Recommended.

Haven't posted in this thread in months, not sure if I have the energy to even attempt to catch up.

La Ceremonie (1995) - Like The Bridesmaid this is a Claude Chabrol-film based on a novel by Ruth Rendell. Huppert and Bonnaire are excellent as the two leading ladies and the very marxist morale, if you can call it that, is relevant enough. The ending was a bit extreme but cool in the context of subtle revalations earlier in the movie. I still think The Housemaid (Hanyo) from 2010 is the best maid-movie out there, doing what this film does but much better.

Red Heat (1985)
Image

More along the lines of Midnight Express than a trashy WIP film. Linda Blair (looking less chubby cheeked here) gets dragged into a convoluted cold war thriller plot, where she is mistakenly abducted and imprisoned in a brutal East German women's prison. Emmanuelle's Sylvia Kristel, sporting a hilarious Gene Wilder hairstyle, is the sadistic top bitch running the show where she and her awfully tatted up bull dyke thugs steal fellow inmate's chocolates and forces them into late night lesbian shenanigans. Meanwhile, Blair's fiancee, Travolta look-alike, William Ostrander spends much of his time running around like Harrison Ford in Frantic trying to find out what the hell happened to his bird and then hooking up with his US army buddies to organise a prison break. As mentioned earlier it's not a WIP film and the female cast is so busted that the nudity is more repulsive than arousing but the film itself is genuinely good and well acted. It's a cold and bleak looking film which makes you glad you're not behind the iron curtain. I still prefer the Arnie film though.

Virgin Witch (1972)
Image

Soporific, occult themed British horror that I found pretty lame. On the positive side, Vicki Michelle who played Yvette the sultry horny waitress in WWII themed British sitcom, Allo, Allo gets naked in this along with her real life sister who plays the film's power hungry lead. Along with Satan's Cheerleaders, this film features one of the most inept witches' coven I've seen on film so far.

Shiver of the Vampires (1971)
Image

Another vampire themed Jean Rollin film and very surreal. The film looks gorgeous Bavaesque in many respects, unfortunately, it bored the hell out of me.

Angel (1984)
Image

A high school student by day, a teen prostitute working the seedy streets of LA by night. The very same streets stalked by a psycho sexual killer. How this film ever got green lit is beyond me, but I was surprised at just how good it really was. The double identity of Molly "Angel" Stewart is handled really well by Donna Wilkes as an abandoned teenager who makes a remarkable achievement in balancing both roles with some degree of conviction. The supporting cast of fellow street walkers and performers lend to her surrogate family that provide the only real love Angel has ever had. The film treads a difficult line of trashy 80's exploitation with some legit drama before the film's awesome finale. Much like Vice Squad, this film was better than it had any right to be and was fucking awesome.

Avenging Angel (1985)
Image

Cheerleader Camp's Betsy Russel taking over the lead role of Angel and unfortunately this sequel is very weak, losing much of the elements that made it's predecessor so great. More focus on humour this time round especially so during the film's looney bin break-out scenes. The mafioso thugs, a staple of many 80's action flicks, are a poor substitute to the previous antagonist. Some of the supporting cast make a welcome return but they don't seem as likeable as before, including Kip Carson the ageing western actor. An insipid and unnecessary sequel.

Just spent all morning with this and am thoroughly impressed. One of the best HD transfers I've ever seen, no lie. Shit looks incredible.
Movie still holds up really well and the new extras are pretty swell. The interview with Spielberg is pretty cool (although I was hoping he'd talk about whether the South Park episode really had a role in him changing his mind about not fucking with Raiders and restoring ET to its original condition) but the highlight is a new hour-long behind the scenes documentary; pretty cool to see how one of the best director's of our time works behind the camera.

Image
Started to go through this one as well. Only have watched The Mummy so far but it looks really fucking great too, better than I could've imagined an 80-year old film could look.
The movie is still entertaining even though it ends in an abrupt and unsatisfying manner. Funny that this is still the coolest looking mummy ever put on screen, Boris is the goat. Those scenes where they show his eyes lighting up are mesmerizing.

Universal's had a spotty track record with HD releases so far, but it looks like they've finally figured this shit out.
Going to watch the new Jaws soon, which from everything I hear is supposed to look amazing as well.

Les Biches (1968) - A sexy triangle-drama with a hint of psychothriller. The movie is all style with little substance and is all the better for it. We get two beautiful leads, upperclass glamour and an engaging story of sexual politics and class. It's a lovely film in my estimation and the best from Chabrol I have seen thus far.

Image

Dredd (2012) - I managed to see this the last day it was running in 3D here. Glad I caught it because it's a quality actionfilm. The designs looked a bit bland and the ending was somewhat anti-climatic, but otherwise this movie is a homerun. It will innevitably be compared with The Raid and in terms of action this movie can't really compete, though it still hits hard like a proper 80's action. We don't get enough of that.

Horses for courses. Comparisons between The Raid and Dredd will never end because of the unfortunate coincidences with both movies' central plot and location, that's where it all ends though and both are radically different, blindsided folks refuse to see into it though. Dredd is all attitude and a pure gun porn movie, one that makes shooting people in the head in a plethora of creative ways, a bonafide fine art, the other, despite having some visceral gunplay, is predominantly a martial arts movie, a bloody excellent one. Both of these movies are completely stellar and deserve to be appreciated by any red-blooded male who enjoys good old fashioned ultra-violence. I can't avoid my obvious Dredd fandom, but we finally got an excellent Dredd film, one that truly brings Wagner's creation to life and it has cult classic written all over it. The fact that the film flopped big-time and we'll probably never get a sequel, at least in the next couple of years, is the latest reason why the vast majority of the cinema-going public are hype-feeding, pussy whipped, cretins.
